Association between self-reported child maltreatment and risk of hospital-treated infectious diseases in middle-aged and older adults: A UK Biobank cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the association between child maltreatment and hospital-treated infectious diseases in middle-aged and older adults. METHODS: 145,151 participants aged 38-72 years from the UK Biobank between 2006 and 2010 were enrolled and interviewed. Child maltreatment included five types: physical abuse, physical neglect, emotional abuse, emotional neglect, and sexual abuse. Patterns of maltreatment were identified using latent class analysis (LCA). Cox regression was employed to estimate the associations between child maltreatment (number of types, individual types,

Symmetric blaschkoid pityriasis rosea in a child.

Pityriasis rosea (PR) is a common papulosquamous disorder that may be related to primary infection or endogenous reactivation of human herpesvirus 7 and 6. Based on morphology, distribution, and size of lesions, several atypical variants of PR have been described. PR following the lines of Blaschko represents an atypical variant that has seldom been described in the literature. Here, we describe a child with diabetes who developed PR in a symmetrical, blaschkolinear configuration.

Child and family predictors of insomnia from early childhood to adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia is prevalent among children and adolescents and is associated with a wide range of negative outcomes. Knowledge about its determinants is therefore important, but due to the lack of longitudinal studies, such knowledge is limited. The aim of the present inquiry is to identify child and family predictors of future pediatric insomnia within a psycho-bio-behavioral framework. METHODS: A representative community sample (n = 1,037) was followed biennially from 4 to 14 years of age (2007-2017). Insomnia was defined based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disord

Mental Disorders in Early Childhood.

BACKGROUND: About 17% of all children suffer from a mental disorder in early childhood, defined as the period up to the age of 6 years. METHODS: This review is based on publications retrieved by a selective search in PubMed and the Web of Science, as well as on the authors' clinical and scientific experience. RESULTS: In children up to age 2, disorders of emotional and motor regulation are common (ca. 7%), as are feeding problems (25%), which persist in 2% of children to meet the diagnostic criteria for a feeding disorder. Reactive attachment disorder, a serious mental illness, has a prevale

[Depression in the child: internal reaction or psychological elaboration?].

The question of a child's depressive suffering is at the heart of psychopathology. The concept of a "fundamental depressive affect" and the notion of "depressive reaction", defended by many authors, are here discussed as reductionist. The notions of "depressive movement" and "depressive system" are described so as to take into account both the characteristics of the depressive experience and its unexpected appearance in different clinical contexts. The psychic work of the depressive movement is envisaged based on the notion of object loss, the existence of a denial constitutive of the depressi

Child abuse and neglect in infancy: sources of hostility within the parent-infant dyad and disorders of attachment in infancy.

The human infant is prepared during fetal life and arrives on the scene ready to participate actively as a partner with the parent in structuring his own development. Parents are normally prepared for this participant activity by achieving a high degree of sensitivity to the signals of distress of and by the infant's affective engagement with them. The meaning of ordinary distress signals is in instances of child abuse and neglect determined by an unconscious mythology which the parent has about the infant, and also by what the parent finds unacceptable in oneself and projects onto the infant.

Daily-life reactivity and emotion regulation in children with social anxiety disorder.

Prominent models of adult social anxiety disorder emphasize the role of hyperreactivity and emotion regulation (ER) difficulties. However, it is unclear whether these factors are relevant in childhood, a critical period for the development of this disorder. We used ecological momentary assessment with mobile phones to assess daily-life emotional reactivity and use and effectiveness of ER strategies in children aged 10-13 years. We compared three groups: Social anxiety disorder (n = 29), clinical controls with mixed anxiety disorders (n = 27) and healthy controls (n = 31). We also investigated

[Maternal filicide in Japan: analyses of 96 cases and future directions for prevention].

OBJECTIVE: Maternal filicide is not an isolated phenomenon. When a mother kills her child, she may be affected by many factors and confronted with different problems based on the child's developmental stage. In this study in Japan, a judicial sample of 96 adult women, convicted in their first trial for the murder or attempted murder of their children, was divided into four groups of mothers according to the age of the victim (25 women killed neonates, 22 women infants, 27 women preschool children, and 22 women schoolchildren and/or teenagers) in order to identify the factors that have a major

Associations between Infant Behaviors during the Face-To-Face Still-Face Paradigm and Oppositional Defiant and Callous-Unemotional Behaviors in Early Childhood.

Deficits in social orienting (i.e., gazing toward caregivers) during dyadic interactions and reactivity to stressful stimuli have been identified as behavioral correlates of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and callous-unemotional (CU) behaviors in older children. The goal of the current study was to investigate infants' mother-directed gaze and reactivity during the face-to-face and still-face episodes of the face-to-face stillface paradigm performed at 6 months in the prediction of ODD and CU behaviors in early childhood. Using data from the Durham Child Health and Development study (n =

Temperament, anxiety, and depression in school-age children who stutter.

PURPOSE: The main aim of this study was to gain insight into whether temperament and/or stuttering severity were associated with anxiety and depression in children who stutter. Additionally, the study also provided an indication into the prevalence of anxiety and depression in children who stutter in a clinical cohort. METHOD: The participants were 132 English-speaking children (105 boys and 27 girls) between 9;0 and 14;11 years old (M = 11;8, SD = 1;10) and their mothers. At their first visit to a specialist center for children who stutter, mothers and children completed the relevant version

Is executive function specifically impaired in children with neurofibromatosis type 1? A neuropsychological investigation of cognitive flexibility.

Our study investigated spontaneous versus reactive cognitive flexibility in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and their comorbidity with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Thirty children with NF1 aged 7 to 12 years old were compared to 60 healthy controls matched by age, gender, and parental education. On the basis of Eslinger and Grattan's definition ( 1993 ), spontaneous shifting was assessed using fluency tests, whereas reactive flexibility was measured by a child adaptation of the Modified Card-Sorting Test and the Brixton Test. IQ and basic skills were taken into

Childhood maltreatment and inflammatory markers: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood maltreatment (CM) has been associated with several diseases in adult life, including diabetes, obesity and mental disorders. Inflammatory conditions have been postulated as possible mediators of this relationship. The aim was to conduct a systematic review regarding the association between CM and inflammatory markers in adulthood. METHOD: A literature search of the PubMed, ISI, EMBASE and PsychINFO databases was conducted. The key terms used were as follows: 'Child Maltreatment', 'Childhood Trauma', 'Early Life Stress', 'Psychological Stress', 'Emotional Stress', 'Child A

Myasthenia gravis with alopecia totalis.

Myasthenia gravis was diagnosed on the basis of a positive Tensilon test in a 4-year-old male child with alopecia totalis. His scalp hair and eyebrows had began to disappear at the age of 10 months. No other physical abnormalities such as motor paralysis, were seen except for left ptosis and alopecia totalis. His serum titer of anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody was elevated. No immune system abnormalities (C3, C4, CH50, C-reactive protein, antinuclear antibody or lymphocyte function disorders) were detected. Although alopecia areata and alopecia totalis are sometimes present in adults with

Childhood Attachment Patterns and Disorders.

Pediatricians spend a substantial part of patients' visits counseling on development and behavior. In many cases, the root of behavioral challenges is the relationship between the child and their caregiver. Pediatricians need to know the signs of unhealthy relationship patterns that indicate the need for more resources other than the usual anticipatory guidance. This article reviews the attachment patterns that a child can form with their caregiver, detailing the characteristics of secure and insecure relationships. This article also describes the conditions in which a disorder of attachment o

Tuberculin reactivity and allergic disorders in schoolchildren, Okinawa, Japan.

BACKGROUND: Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination triggers a T-helper type 1 response. Whether BCG vaccination and positive tuberculin reactivity are preventive against allergic disorders remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: The current cross-sectional study investigated the relationship of BCG vaccination and tuberculin reactivity with the prevalence of allergic disorders using data from the Ryukyus Child Health Study (RYUCHS). METHODS: Subjects were 5717 schoolchildren aged 8-11 years in Okinawa, Japan. The RYUCHS collected information on symptoms of allergic disorders and potential conf

[Psychic disturbances in adopted children--an overview of the postiion of clinical research].

Empirical studies on the psychopathology of adoptees are summarized and discussed with regard to the possibility of a relationship between adoption and psychic disturbances. The results leave the question open as to whether adoptees are more prone to psychic disturbances than other individuals. Those under treatment do not seem to be more severely disturbed than others. Whereas however the adoptees display more disturbances in their social behavior rather than neurotic disturbances, the relationsship is reversed in the population of the non-dopted. The causes seem to lie in the conditions in e

Early life experiences and psychiatric disorders: an adoptee study.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is any correlation between negative experiences in early infancy and the later occurrence of psychiatric disorders. The subjects in this study were a cohort of 2,215 adoptees born 1930-1949. Information about the probands' early experiences has been obtained from the files of the Child Welfare Office, which include age at time of placement in the adoptive home and type of care before placement. 136 of the probands had been treated in a psychiatric department or mental hospital. From the case records a uniform classification of diagnoses wa

Psychopharmacologic strategies for the treatment of aggression in juveniles.

Maladaptive aggression in youth is one of the most common and troublesome reasons for referrals to child psychiatrists. It has a complex relationship with psychopathology. There are several syndromes, which are primary disturbances of clustered maladaptive aggression, most notably oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder. However, problems with aggression also appear in a wide range of other disturbances, such as bipolar disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and mood disorders. Additionally, aggression is normative, serves an adaptive purpose and can be situationally induced. Thes
