The relevance of subtyping children with mathematical learning disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Profiles of mathematical learning disability (MLD) have been conceptualized in the literature, but empirical evidence to support them based on academic and cognitive characteristics is lacking. AIMS: We examined whether profiles of mathematics performance can empirically be identified and whether the identified profiles also differ in underlying cognitive skills. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Latent profile analysis in 281 fourth-graders. Basic arithmetic and advanced mathematics were used to identify profiles. Cognitive skills were then described for each profile of mathematics perfor

Metacognitive Precursors: An Analysis in Children with Different Disabilities.

The analysis of Metacognitive skills is a key element to guide the learning process. Current research has shown the initiation of these skills from an early age. The present study had two aims: (1) to validate a Scale Measuring Precursor Metacognitive Skills (SMPMS) in children with diverse disabilities, and (2) to study possible significant different between different disabilities in precursor metacognitive skill use. We worked with 87 children with different disabilities, with an average age range of 24-37 months. The results have shown high indicators of reliability and validity of the SMPM

Family interventions to prevent maltreatment of children with disabilities.

In addition to the challenges inherent to physical and cognitive impairments, children with disabilities are at high risk of exhibiting behavioral and emotional problems. Consequently, their parents are under undo stress, which in some instances may lead to child abuse. Specifically, children with disabilities are 3 to 4 times more likely to be abused than are their normally developing peers. This alarming statistic is a consequence of a set of interrelated factors that include the child, the disability, the family, and the socioeconomic environment where they live. In this installment of Ethi

Cognitive profile of children with neurofibromatosis and reading disabilities.

A large percentage of children with Neurofibromatosis Type 1(NF-1) have learning disabilities, often in the realm of reading. Previous studies have indicated that children with NF-1 show a neuropsychological profile similar to idiopathic reading disabilities (IRD); however, studies typically have not subdivided children with NF-1 into those who do and do not have RD (NF+RD and NFnoRD, respectively). The current study examined the cognitive profile of children with NF-1 with and without RD and compared them to children with IRD as well as to typically developing readers (Controls). Findings sho

Pulmonary care of children and adolescents with developmental disabilities.

Caring for children and adolescents with developmental disabilities is challenging because of their susceptibility to varying degrees of respiratory morbidity and mortality. This article discusses the common pulmonary problems affecting children with developmental disabilities. Topics to be discussed include gastroesophageal reflux, drooling, and dysphagia and their relation to aspiration and aspiration pneumonia, upper airway obstruction and obstructive sleep apnea, and the role of airway clearance. Case studies are used to introduce a discussion of the underlying etiology, currently accepted

Solving the enigma: toilet training children with learning disabilities.

Promoting continence with children with a learning difficulty has traditionally taken second place to managing their other needs. Previous studies have given the impression that children are not ready for toilet training unless they are able to experience awareness of self and respond to the stimulus of a full bladder. This has resulted in assumptions regarding the ability of some children with learning difficulties to become toilet trained and consequently they are 'labelled' as incontinent and automatically issued with nappies. This approach means that any underlying problems such as constip

Literacy of children with physical disabilities: a literature review.

The ability to read and write can influence an individual's educational, communication, and vocational opportunities. Occupational therapists can assist children with physical disabilities to achieve literacy skills. By setting priorities and goals for each child, in conjunction with their parent(s), opportunities can be provided and technologies utilized to access literacy material and enhance the child's abilities to read and write. This extensive literature review provides clinicians with information on the factors that influence the development of literacy for children with physical disabi

Nutrition: an issue of concern for children with disabilities.

Children with special health care needs should be identified as early as possible. Nutritionists, educators, therapists, parents, primary care clinicians, should serve as interdisciplinary advocates for these children by planning through conversations, meetings, and individualized educational plan objectives to secure any needed services. Intervention services also can involve specialized techniques such as food preparation, stimulation of the eating process, and monitoring of specialized feedings (e.g., gastrostomy tubes). Intervention with children exhibiting special health needs should be i

Nursing care of children with developmental disabilities having surgery.

Children with developmental disabilities (CWDD) who undergo surgery have special needs. The nurse is required to make accurate assessments of the intellectual, psychosocial, and physical state of the child as well as the emotional functioning of the family. The nurse must be aware of the legal implications and his/her own attitudes regarding CWDD. Parents must be accepted as partners with the health care team and open communication should be established. Special concerns for the health care team are latex allergy and malignant hyperthermia. Nursing Care Plans specific to the child with pain, e

Fathers' experiences of caring for children with developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Although caregiving for children with developmental disabilities has been widely examined, fathers' experiences remain relatively underexplored. This qualitative descriptive study explored fathers' caregiving experiences in the context of children with developmental disabilities, focusing on psychological, social, economic, and systemic dimensions of caregiving and fathers' coping and adaptation processes. DESIGN AND METHODS: A qualitative descriptive design was used. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 19 fathers of children diagnosed with develo

Pharmacotherapy of Disruptive Behaviors in Children with Intellectual Disabilities.

Disruptive behaviors are a class of predominantly externalizing behaviors that include physical aggression, property destruction, temper outbursts, verbal aggression, and some forms of self-injurious behaviors. Externalizing behaviors are also major components of disruptive, impulse-control and conduct disorders, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, trauma-related and stressor-related disorders, intermittent explosive disorder, personality disorders, and other neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. Disruptive behaviors and associated disorders are among the most frequent reasons

Newborn Auditory Brainstem Responses in Children with Developmental Disabilities.

We integrated data from a newborn hearing screening database and a preschool disability database to examine the relationship between newborn click evoked auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) and developmental disabilities. This sample included children with developmental delay (n = 2992), speech impairment (SI, n = 905), language impairment (n = 566), autism spectrum disorder (ASD, n = 370), and comparison children (n = 128,181). We compared the phase of the ABR waveform, a measure of sound processing latency, across groups. Children with SI and children with ASD had greater newborn ABR phase v
