Chironomid midge sensitization in sewage workers: case study.

Non-biting chironomid midges (Diptera: Chironomidae) may cause sensitization and allergic reactions in humans and have recently been identified as a potential health problem in Swedish municipal sewage treatment plants. To investigate, on a pilot scale, the allergenic potential of chironomids in sewage workers, all workers (n = 8) at a sewage treatment plant and local controls (n = 16) completed a symptom questionnaire, underwent measurement of the fraction of nitric oxide in exhaled air, spirometry, and provided serum samples for the determination of atopy status and the prevalence of specifi…

Evaluation of acute toxicity and enzyme activity of commonly used pesticides in rice fields to Chironomus kiiensis and Chironomus javanus.

Various chemical pesticides are commonly applied in rice field ecosystems to control insect pests, diseases, and weeds. However, pesticide residues and the resulting environmental pollution pose serious threats to the safety of farmland ecosystems. This study evaluated the acute toxicity of five insecticides (chlorantraniliprole, abamectin, pymetrozine, nitenpyram, and indoxacarb), five fungicides (trifloxystrobin, validamycin, tebuconazole, thiamethoxam, and propiconazole), and three herbicides (pretilachlor, cyhalofop-butyl, and penoxsulam) on the fourth-instar larvae of two chironomid speci

Efficacy of spinosad in control of larval Culex tarsalis and chironomid midges, and its nontarget effects.

Formulations of spinosad for mosquito and midge control (e.g., Natular) are derived from the Saccharopolyspora spinosa bacterium. They offer a different mode of action from other larvicides. We tested the effectiveness of single-brood (2EC) and extended-release pellet (G30) formulations against larvae of Culex tarsalis and chironomid midges, at mid- to high label rates, in wetland mesocosms. We also monitored survival of mayfly nymphs and other nontarget insects. Both formulations were effective against mosquitoes for > 4 wk and yielded excellent midge control. Spinosad caused mortality of may

Comparing the effects of conventional and biodegradable plastic mulch particles and their leachates on Chironomus riparius.

Agricultural mulches are commonly employed to enhance crop yields, these mulches are typically made of conventional plastic such as polyethylene (PE). As an alternative, mulches can be made of biodegradable plastics. However, both plastics are prone to weathering, causing plastic fragments and unintended leachate to end up in the adjacent water systems. Plastic leachates can contain various chemical additives depending on plastic type, yet their effects are poorly studied. Here, we exposed Chironomus riparius larvae through the water phase to artificially weathered plastic particles of convent

The use of growth and behavioral endpoints to assess the effects of pesticide mixtures upon aquatic organisms.

Aquatic communities are often subject to complex contaminant mixtures, usually at sublethal concentrations, that can cause long-term detrimental effects. Chemicals within mixtures can effectively interact, resulting in synergism, antagonism or additivity. We investigated the tertiary mixture effects of two pyrethroids, lambda-cyhalothrin and permethrin, and the organophosphate chlorpyrifos, evaluating sublethal endpoints; immobility and growth, on Chironomus dilutus in 10-day exposures. We utilized a toxic units (TU) approach, based on median lethal concentrations (LC50) for each compound. The

Allergy to chironomid larvae (red migde larvae) in non professional handlers of fish food.

UNLABELLED: Chironomids are insects which inhabit wetlands. In countries such as Sudan, The United States. Egypt and Japan they are the cause of serious environmental allergy. In Europe, and particularly in Spain, allergy to Chironomids is infrequent and has only been described in patients who handle Chironomid larvae which form part of certain fish foods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report a case of hypersensitivity to the Chironomid Midge (Chironomus thummi thummi) in a 23-year-old patient who on two occasions, after being in contact with fishfood, suffered rash, rhinoconjunctivitis, dyspnea

Single-use take-away cups of paper are as toxic to aquatic midge larvae as plastic cups.

Single-use plastics and food packaging are the most common items polluting the environment, commonly identified in surveys and litter monitoring campaigns. There are pushes to ban these products from production and use in different regions, and to replace them with other materials viewed as "safer" or "more sustainable". Here, we address the potential environmental impacts of take-away cups and lids used for hot and cold beverages, consisting of plastic or paper. We produced leachates from plastic cups (polypropylene), lids (polystyrene), and paper cups (lined with polylactic acid), under cond

Sublethal Toxicity of 17 Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances with Diverse Structures to Ceriodaphnia dubia, Hyalella azteca, and Chironomus dilutus.

Seven-day sublethal toxicity tests were performed with the freshwater invertebrates Ceriodaphnia dubia, Hyalella azteca, and Chironomus dilutus to determine the effects of per- or polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) of varying chain length within four classes: perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs), perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSAs), perfluoroalkane sulfonamides, and fluorotelomer sulfonic acids. In general, toxicity increased with increasing chain length, but the slopes of these relationships varied markedly by species and chemical class. The toxicity of individual PFCAs was similar

Prey consumption and condition of endangered age-0 pallid sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus and co-located congeners: An assessment of surrogacy.

The capture of wild age-0 pallid sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus was rare historically. However, an unprecedented high number of captures during 2021, coupled with a more typical year in 2020, provided a unique opportunity to address diet-related knowledge gaps during early life and evaluate surrogacy relationships with abundant congener individuals. We assessed diet and body condition of 55 age-0 pallid sturgeon and 139 co-located non-pallid Scaphirhynchus individuals of similar size. Both pallid and non-pallid individuals primarily consumed Chironomidae (Diptera), with Lopescladius and Paracla…

Environmental monitoring of Vibrio cholerae using chironomids in India.

Environmental Vibrio cholerae strains belonging to the non-O1/non-O139 serogroups are natural inhabitants of freshwater including estuarine environments. Recent findings indicated that chironomids (Diptera: Chironomidae), the most widely distributed insects in freshwater, serve as a natural reservoir of these bacteria. Here we study the role of chironomids, particularly exuviae as carriers and as a monitoring tool for the distribution of V. cholerae in the environment. During a survey conducted in India (June 2006), 326 V. cholerae non-O1/non-O139 isolates were isolated from chironomid egg mas…

Adult non-biting midges: possible windborne carriers of Vibrio cholerae non-O1 non-O139.

Vibrio cholerae is a waterborne bacterium native to the aquatic environment. There are over 200 known serogroups yet only two cause cholera pandemics in humans. Direct contact of human sewage with drinking water, sea-born currents and marine transportation, represent modes of dissemination of the bacteria and thus the disease. The simultaneous cholera outbreaks that occur sometimes in distant localities within continental landmasses are puzzling. Here we present evidence that flying, non-biting midges (Diptera; Chironomidae), collected in the air, carry viable non-O1 non-O139 serogroups of V. …

Characterization of cadmium and calcium fluxes along the gut, malpighian tubules, and anal papillae of the dipteran Chironomus riparius.

Chironomids are often one of the dominant organisms in significantly polluted freshwater. Many invertebrate studies have characterized whole-organism mechanisms of toxicity, for example, assessing cadmium (Cd) uptake via calcium (Ca) channels. However, with the use of the scanning ion-selective electrode technique and an innovative Cd-selective microelectrode, we analyze this relationship at the organ level using a realistic concentration of Cd and Ca in the hemolymph (blood). Generally, Cd fluxes follow the same directional pattern as Ca, although Ca fluxes are approximately 5 times higher th

Do natural rubber latex condoms pose a risk to aquatic systems?

The presence and potential adverse effects of plastic-polymers in the environment are receiving increasing attention in the popular and scientific press. However, quantifying emissions, exposure and effects of these materials remains a challenge. This paper describes the application of a questionnaire survey to quantify emissions of condom material from the domestic household to the sewage waste stream. Condoms are an important mainstay for birth control and the reduction of sexually transmitted infections. Survey participants were estimated to flush condoms down the toilet 2.96% of the time,

Sediment toxicity and deformities of chironomid larvae in Lake Piediluco (Central Italy).

The chemical analysis of the bottom sediments of the Lake Piediluco (Central Italy) has been carried out in order to individuate the potential correlation between the sediment toxicity and the high incidence of mouthpart deformities in chironomid larvae (biological indicators) found in this lake. The environmental contamination has been analyzed by determining the concentrations of the main heavy metals (lead, copper, cadmium, chromium, zinc and nickel), and the concentrations of organic compounds of anthropic source: PAHs, NPPs and OCPs. Heavy metals concentrations have pointed out a non-elev

Promotion of microplastic degradation on the conjugative transfer of antibiotic resistance genes in the gut of macrobenthic invertebrates.

Microplastics and antibiotic resistance genes are two new pollutants in water environments, and they have potential risks to human health an … stics. The results of animal feeding experiments showed that microplastic degradation in the gut of Chironomidae larvae could promote the conjugative transfer of ARGs. The underlying molecular mechanism was SOS response. This study provides a new method for the analysis of the interaction effect of multiple pollutants in freshwater environments.

Haplotype-resolved genome of a dry-preservable cell line reveals chromosome evolution and DNA damage.

Anhydrobiosis, the ability to survive extreme desiccation, occurs in diverse organisms and provides a framework for understanding how cells preserve genome integrity under severe water loss. In insects, this phenotype is rare, and mechanistic studies have focused on the chironomid midge Polypedilum vanderplanki and its cultured cell line, Pv11. Previous genomic resources for this system were limited by the use of mixed insect and cell-line DNA. Here, we generated a high-quality chromosome-level, haplotype-resolved assembly from a clonal Pv11 line. Chromosome 4 showed markedly elevated heterozy

A DEB-TKTD model for assessing the combined effects of imidacloprid, temperature and food availability on aquatic insects.

Mayflies and other aquatic insects are considered key species in environmental risk assessments of pesticides, particularly due to their sensitivity to neonicotinoids. While toxicity tests of pesticides are often conducted under laboratory controlled conditions, these organisms under environmentally relevant scenarios face numerous variable environmental factors including food availability, temperature, and chemical exposure. To investigate the influence of these environmental factors on toxicity, we developed Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) based toxicokinetic-toxicodynamic (TKTD) models for Chir

Toxicity of the insecticides spinosad and indoxacarb to the non-target aquatic midge Chironomus riparius.

Spinosad and indoxacarb are two relatively new insecticides mainly used in agriculture to control insect pests. However, at their current application rates, non-target aquatic insect species may also be impacted. In this study, larvae of the non-biting midge Chironomus riparius were exposed in the laboratory to both insecticides and their effects evaluated at the organismal level, using standard ecotoxicological tests, and at the biochemical level, by monitoring specific oxidative stress, neuronal, and energy metabolism biomarkers. Chronic exposure to both insecticides compromised growth and e
