Surface functionalization of polystyrene nanoparticles modulates nanoparticle-induced phytotoxicity in Chlorella vulgaris.

Polystyrene nanoparticles (NPs) are increasingly released into aquatic systems, but how surface formulations shape their interactions with primary producers remains insufficiently understood. We examined the effects of nominally non-functionalized polystyrene NPs (PS-NPs) and amino- (PS-NH2-NPs) or carboxyl-functionalized NPs (PS-COOH-NPs) on Chlorella vulgaris after short-term 72 h exposure to a comparative high concentration (40 mg L-1). All polystyrene NPs remained stable in the culture medium and were detected in EPS-associated and cell-associated fractions, with stronger relative retentio

Nutrient removal by Chlorella vulgaris F1068 under cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide induced hormesis.

Toxicants are generally harmful to biotechnology in wastewater treatment. However, trace toxicant can induce microbial hormesis, but to date, it is still unknown how this phenomenon affects nutrient removal during municipal wastewater treatment process. Therefore, this study focused on the effects of hormesis induced by cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), a representative quaternary ammonium cationic surfactant, on nutrient removal by Chlorella vulgaris F1068. Results showed that when the concentration of CTAB was less than 10 ng/L, the cellular components chlorophyll a, proteins, polysacc

Physiological responses and phosphorus transformation of Chlorella vulgaris under tricresyl phosphate stress.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are emerging contaminants widely distributed in aquatic environments. Chlorella vulgaris can effectively remove tricresyl phosphate (TCP), a representative aromatic OPE. TCP exerts a concentration-dependent effect on algal growth and phosphate metabolism. Low TCP concentrations (<30  mg/L) induce a hormesis effect, enhancing algal growth by 6-8 %, whereas high TCP concentrations (≥30  mg/L) inhibit growth by 16-19 % and double the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS), with severe growth inhibition occurring above 50  mg/L. Under tolerable TCP stress, Chlorella e

Stress-Induced Metabolic Reprogramming in the Green Microalga Chlorella sp. SLA-04.

Microalgae thrive in diverse and often challenging environments by coordinating metabolic and physiological responses to environmental stress, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying these adaptations remain incompletely understood. Here, we combined physiological, biochemical, and transcriptomic analyses to investigate the response of the green microalga Chlorella sp. SLA-04 to nitrogen depletion and high-alkalinity growth. Nitrogen depletion redirected carbon toward carbohydrate and lipid storage and was accompanied by coordinated transcriptional changes that suppressed photosynthesis while

Application of Liquid Waste from Biogas Production for Microalgae Chlorella sp. Cultivation.

Microalgae biomass is a viable feedstock for a wide range of industries. Recently, there has also been interest in the ability of microalgae biomass applications for biofuel production. In the meantime, the cultivation of microalgae biomass requires high energy costs, and the application of microalgae for technical purposes is still problematic. A significant part of the cost of biomass arises from the nutrients used for cultivation. Chemical compounds included in the microalgae cultivation media can be replaced by suitable wastes containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and other elements. This could

Food grade extraction of Chlorella vulgaris polar lipids: A comparative lipidomic study.

Glycolipids and phospholipids are the main reservoirs of omega polyunsaturated fatty acids in microalgae. Their extraction for the food industry requires food grade solvents, however, the use of these solvents is generally associated with low extraction yields. In this study, we evaluated the lipid extraction efficiency of food-grade ethanol, ultrasound-assisted ethanol (UAE) and dichloromethane/methanol (DCM) from Chlorella vulgaris cultivated under autotrophic and heterotrophic conditions. Yields of lipids, fatty acids (FA), and complex lipid profiles were determined by gravimetry, GC-MS, an

Assessing Nutrient Removal Kinetics in Flushed Manure Using Chlorella vulgaris Biomass Production.

The utilization of dairy wastewater for producing algal biomass is seen as a two-fold opportunity to treat wastewater and produce algae biomass, which can be potentially used for production of biofuels. In animal agriculture system, one of the major waste streams is dairy manure that contains high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus. Furthermore, it is produced abundantly in California's dairy industry, as well as many other parts of the world. We hypothesized that flushed manure, wastewater from a dairy farm, can be used as a potential feedstock after pretreatment to grow Chlorella vulgaris bio

Comparison between several methods of total lipid extraction from Chlorella vulgaris biomass.

The use of lipids obtained from microalgae biomass has been described as a promising alternative for production of biodiesel to replace petro-diesel. It involves steps such as the cultivation of microalgae, biomass harvesting, extraction and transesterification of lipids. The purpose of the present study was to compare different methods of extracting total lipids. These methods were tested in biomass of Chlorella vulgaris with the solvents ethanol, hexane and a mixture of chloroform:methanol in ratios 1:2 and 2:1. The solvents were associated with other mechanisms of cell disruption such as us

Chlorella vulgaris extract ameliorates carbon tetrachloride-induced acute hepatic injury in mice.

The possible protective effects of Chlorella vulgaris extract (CVE) on carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced acute hepatic injury in mice and the mechanism underlying these effects was investigated. CCl(4) administration caused a marked increase in the levels of serum aminotransferases, lipid peroxidation and cytochrome P450-2E1 (CYP450) expression. Also, decreased glutathione (GSH) content and activities of cellular antioxidant defense enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) were found after CCl(4) exposure. Physiological responses of Chlorella sp. To high CO2 stress and effective alleviation strategies.

Industrial flue gas with high CO2 concentrations severely inhibits microalgal growth, restricting the practical application of microalgae-based carbon capture. This study systematically investigates the physiological responses of Chlorella sp. to elevated CO2 levels (6-90%) using pH-stat culture systems, confirming a significant pH-independent growth inhibition under hypercapnic conditions (≥50% CO2). Based on distinct physiological alterations in photosynthetic efficiency, key enzyme activities, and elemental composition, a metabolic model is proposed to illustrate the trade-off mechanisms be

Chemical Profiling and Immune-Stimulating Activity of Solvent Fractions Derived from Dietary Chlorella.

Chlorella, a genus of single-celled green algae, is widely industrially cultivated as a dietary supplement ingredient due to its high protein content and various nutrients. In this study, the immune-stimulating effect of solvent fractions prepared from Chlorella vulgaris (CV) and Chlorella protothecoides (CP) was evaluated through the expression of immune-related factors, such as TNF-α and IFN-γ in T cells obtained from mice. Both Chlorella species showed immunostimulatory effects in hexane and butanol fractions, but CV increased TNF-α only, while CP elevated both TNF-α and IFN-γ. In addition,

Antibiotic synergistic effect surge bioenergy potential and pathogen resistance of Chlorella variabilis biofilm.

Tetracycline (TC) and ciprofloxacin (CF) induce a synergistic effect that alters the biochemical composition, leading to a decrease in the growth and photosynthetic efficiency of microalgae. But the current study provides a novel insight into stress-inducing techniques that trigger a change in macromolecules, leading to an increase in the bioenergy potential and pathogen resistance of Chlorella variabilis biofilm. The study revealed that in a closed system, a light intensity of 167 μmol/m2/s causes 93.5% degradation of TC and 16% degradation of CF after 7 days of exposure, hence availing the p

Preparation of quaternary ammonium-Chlorella vulgaris and its adsorption of Ag(CN)2-.

A novel anion exchange resin, quaternary ammonium-Chlorella vulgaris (QACV), was prepared by introducing quaternary ammonium groups onto dried Chlorella vulgaris as base material. Degrees of epoxy, amine and quaternary ammonium groups of QACV were measured. Water retention, optical microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry were used to characterize QAVC. The adsorption behavior of QACV towards Ag(CN)2- in different conditions was studied carefully. The results showed that QAVC was efficient to adsorb Ag(CN)2- at pH 9-11, and adsorption equilibrium was almost reached in 30 min. Bo

Safety evaluation of a high lipid Whole Algalin Flour (WAF) from Chlorella protothecoides.

Microalgae such as Chlorella spp. have a long history of use in human food. A high lipid Whole Algalin Flour (WAF) composed of dried milled Chlorella protothecoides was evaluated for subchronic toxicity and genotoxic potential. Likelihood of food allergy potential was also evaluated by human repeat-insult patch test. In the subchronic study, rats were fed dietary levels of 25,000, 50,000 or 100,000 ppm WAF in feed for 93-94 days. No mortalities occurred. No treatment-related effects were identified for general condition, body weight, food consumption, ophthalmology, urinalysis, hematology, cli

Carbon Sequestration and Pollution Reduction Mechanisms of Chlorella sp. for Simulated Flue Gas.

Nitric oxide (NO), a signaling molecule and free radical, regulates microalgal photosynthesis, yet its potential in enhancing carbon fixation alongside pollutant mitigation remains underexplored. This study investigated the effects of NO (0, 50, 100 ppm) in simulated flue gas (15% CO2) on Chlorella sp., examining intracellular/extracellular NO dynamics, antioxidant response, key enzyme activity (nitrate reductase), and growth-photosynthesis coupling. Under optimized aeration (25 mL min-1, 3 h), 50 ppm of NO optimally elevated intracellular (0.62-1.30 nmol L-1) and extracellular (2.56-3.90 nmol
