Interaction between behavioral and pharmacological treatment strategies to decrease cocaine choice in rhesus monkeys.

Behavioral and pharmacotherapeutic approaches constitute two prominent strategies for treating cocaine dependence. This study investigated interactions between behavioral and pharmacological strategies in a preclinical model of cocaine vs food choice. Six rhesus monkeys, implanted with a chronic indwelling double-lumen venous catheter, initially responded under a concurrent schedule of food delivery (1-g pellets, fixed-ratio (FR) 100 schedule) and cocaine injections (0-0.1 mg/kg/injection, FR 10 schedule) during continuous 7-day treatment periods with saline or the agonist medication phenmetra

Healthy choices: motivational enhancement therapy for health risk behaviors in HIV-positive youth.

This study piloted a brief individual motivational intervention targeting multiple health risk behaviors in HIV-positive youth aged 16-25. Interviews about sexual behavior and substance use and viral load testing were obtained from 51 HIV-positive youth at baseline and post intervention. Youth were randomized to receive a four-session motivational enhancement intervention (N = 25) or to a wait-list control (N = 26). Of the eligible youth approached, 88% agreed to participate, and 80% percent of participants completed at least three of four sessions. The treatment group showed significantly gre

Willingness valued more than ability in partner choice: Insights into behavioral and ERP data.

In human cooperation, people prefer to choose partners with high willingness and ability-while both are valued by partners, individuals often prioritize willingness. Two event-related potential (ERP) experiments were conducted to discern the neural processes underpinning this preference. In the first experiment, participants made a choice between two potential partners and received feedback on the selected partner's willingness to cooperate. This was followed by feedback on the partner's task performance (ability) or a gambling outcome. In contrast, the second experiment first provided feedbac

Contraceptive Choice and Sexual Behaviors in Both-Sex Attracted Adolescents: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Bisexual adolescents have higher rates of unintended pregnancy than their heterosexual peers and increased rates of high-risk sexual behaviors. They may be less likely to use effective contraception, though limited data is available. This study sought to compare contraceptive choice and sexual risk behaviors of both-sex attracted and opposite-sex attracted adolescents and young adults (AYA) presenting to a contraception clinic. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of AYA aged 14-24 years who presented for an initial visit to a contraception clinic from 2014 to 2020. The prim

Behavioral mechanisms of oxycodone's effects in female and male rats: Reinforcement delay and impulsive choice.

μ-Opioid agonists (e.g., morphine) typically increase impulsive choice, which has been interpreted as an opioid-induced increase in sensitivity to reinforcement delay. Relatively little research has been done with opioids other than morphine (e.g., oxycodone), or on sex differences in opioid effects, on impulsive choice. The present study investigated the effects of acute (0.1-1.0 mg/kg) and chronic (1.0 mg/kg twice/day) administration of oxycodone on choice controlled by reinforcement delay, a primary mechanism implicated in impulsive choice, in female and male rats. Rats responded under a co

Assessment of a glycine uptake inhibitor in animal models of effort-related choice behavior: implications for motivational dysfunctions.

RATIONALE: Motivated behavior can be characterized by a substantial exertion of effort, and organisms often make effort-related decisions based upon analyses of work-related response costs and reinforcement preference. Moreover, alterations in effort-based choice can be seen in people with major depression and schizophrenia. Effort-related decision making is studied using tasks offering choices between high effort options leading to highly valued reinforces vs low effort/low reward options. Reduced impact of emotion on choice behavior in presymptomatic BACHD rats, a transgenic rodent model for Huntington Disease.

Executive dysfunction and psychiatric symptoms are hallmarks of Huntington disease (HD), a neurodegenerative disorder genetically characterized by expanded CAG repeats in the HTT gene. Using the BACHD rat model of HD (97 CAG-CAA repeats), the present research seeks to characterize the progressive emergence of decision-making impairments in a rat version of the Iowa Gambling Task (RGT) and the impact of emotional modulation, whether positive or negative, on choice behavior. The choice efficiency shown both by WT rats (independent of their age) and the youngest BACHD rats (2 and 8months old) evi

Perceived service quality and the theory of planned behavior in patients' choice of providers in a dual health system.

PURPOSE: This study examines psychological mechanisms underlying patients' choice of healthcare providers in a dual health system. Specifically, it applies an extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) model integrating perceived service quality (SERVQUAL) to analyse how attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control and perceived quality are associated with intention and breadth of provider utilisation across public and private settings. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 309 adult healthcare users in Serbia (156 public and 153 private users)

Unhealthy food bias in food addiction: behavioral evidence from a probabilistic image choice task.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Food addiction (FA) shares behavioral and neurobiological similarities with substance use disorders, but objective behavioral measures of FA are lacking. We aimed to adapt the Probabilistic Image Choice (PIC) task to assess behavioral bias toward unhealthy food, and to determine its association with FA and obesity. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study with a 1-year follow-up in a subset of participants. SETTING: Online study with participants from the UK and Ireland. PARTICIPANTS: 415 adults (50% women) recruited via the Prolific platform, with 72 completing a follow-up assess

Choice Behaviors and Prefrontal-Hippocampal Coupling Are Disrupted in a Rat Model of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) are characterized by a range of physical, cognitive, and behavioral impairments. Determining how temporally specific alcohol exposure (AE) affects neural circuits is crucial to understanding the FASD phenotype. Third trimester AE can be modeled in rats by administering alcohol during the first two postnatal weeks, which damages the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and hippocampus (HPC), structures whose functional interactions are required for working memory and executive function. Therefore, we hypothesized that AE during this period would impair workin

Relationship between Psychosocial Impairment, Food Choice Motives, and Orthorexic Behaviors among Polish Adults.

Orthorexic behaviors correlate not only with health motives when choosing food but may also coexist with psychosocial impairment. The aim of this study was to assess the motives of food choice and psychosocial impairment among adults with orthorexic behaviors through the use of ORTO-15 and ORTO-7. The data for the study were collected from a sample of 1007 Polish adults through a cross-sectional quantitative survey conducted in 2019. The respondents were asked to complete the ORTO-15 questionnaire, the Food Choice Questionnaire (FCQ), and the Clinical Impairment Assessment (CIA). Orthorexic be

Influence of monkey dorsolateral prefrontal and posterior parietal activity on behavioral choice during attention tasks.

The dorsolateral prefrontal and the posterior parietal cortex have both been implicated in the guidance of visual attention. Traditionally, posterior parietal cortex has been thought to guide visual bottom-up attention and prefrontal cortex to bias attention through top-down information. More recent studies suggest a parallel time course of activation of the two areas in bottom-up attention tasks, suggesting a common involvement, though these results do not necessarily imply identical roles. To address the specific roles of the two areas, we examined the influence of neuronal activity recorded

Decision making by humans in a behavioral task: do humans, like pigeons, show suboptimal choice?

Consistent with human gambling behavior but contrary to optimal foraging theory, pigeons show a strong preference for an alternative with low probability and high payoff (a gambling-like alternative) over an alternative with a greater net payoff (Zentall & Stagner, Proceedings of the Royal Society B, 278, 1203-1208, 2011). In the present research, we asked whether humans would show suboptimal choice on a task involving choices with probabilities similar to those for pigeons. In Experiment 1, when we selected participants on the basis of their self-reported gambling activities, we found a signi

Influence of livestock keeping on feeding behavior, host choice, and spatial distribution of malaria vectors in rural northwestern Tanzania.

Malaria transmission remains high in rural Tanzania despite widespread use of insecticide-treated nets and indoor residual spraying. Outdoor biting and flexible host-feeding behavior of Anopheles mosquitoes reduce the effectiveness of these interventions. Livestock near households may influence vector behavior, but evidence from high-transmission rural settings is limited. A cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2022 to February 2023 in 5 villages of Misungwi District, involving 44 households (22 livestock-keeping and 22 non-livestock-keeping). Adult Anopheles mosquitoes were colle

Sex-dependent perturbations in risky choice behavior and prefrontal tyrosine hydroxylase levels induced by repetitive mild traumatic brain injury.

Head trauma often impairs cognitive processes mediated within the prefrontal cortex (PFC), leading to impaired decision making and risk-taking behavior. Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) accounts for approximately 80 % of reported head injury cases. Most neurological symptoms of a single mTBI are transient; however, growing evidence suggests that repeated mTBI (rmTBI) results in more severe impairments that worsen with each subsequent injury. Although mTBI-induced disruption of risk/reward decision making has been characterized, the potential for rmTBI to exacerbate these effects and the neur

Salient Constructs for the Development of Shared Decision-Making Tools for HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Uptake and Regimen Choice: Behaviors, Behavioral Skills, and Beliefs.

The availability of multiple pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) regimens creates a preference-sensitive choice for individuals weighing alternative HIV prevention strategies. Investigating factors that are associated with PrEP uptake and regimen choice are key to developing tools to support that decision. A cross-sectional survey was offered to 536 participants in a PrEP demonstration project for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men across 3 cities in China, of which 412 completed surveys and were included in the analysis. We conducted bivariable analyses followed by multi-variable

Orthorexia nervosa vs. healthy orthorexia: relationships with disordered eating, eating behavior, and healthy lifestyle choices.

BACKGROUND: Orthorexia nervosa (OrNe) is a pattern of disordered eating behavior characterized by excessive preoccupation with overvalued ideas about healthy eating. Healthy orthorexia (HeOr) refers to a non-pathological interest in healthy eating and nutrition. Despite converging evidence that OrNe is correlated with measures of psychopathology and personality traits, there is relatively little empirical data relating OrNe and HeOr to eating and health-promoting behavior. METHODS: Aim 1: exploratory structural equation modeling was used to evaluate the factor structure of an English-language
