We report a case of synovial chondromatosis of the ankle joint, which has been successfully treated with arthroscopic removal of loose bodies and synovectomy, with the patient immediately returning to school and activities of daily living. Recovery after arthroscopic debridement and loose body removal is much shorter in comparison with arthrotomy, and there is no need of immobilization postoperatively.

Synovial chondromatosis of the shoulder is a rare condition. The following is a description of such a case with the presenting symptoms, radiographic features, intraoperative findings, and the arthroscopic technique for treatment of this disease. Loose bodies were found in the long head of the biceps tendon sheath, the subscapularis recess, and throughout the glenohumeral joint, causing erosive damage. We feel that arthroscopy allows for better visualization of the entire glenohumeral joint, including the long head of the biceps tendon sheath and the subscapularis recess, and for ease of loose

In a case of synovial osteo-chondromatosis of the knee joint, foci of hyaline and calcified cartilage in the synovial membrane exhibited neither MIB-1-positive cells nor mitotic figures. Loose bodies of the synovial fluid showed a different proliferation behavior. In addition to cartilaginous nodules without MIB-1-positive cells, some of the bodies contained nearly 17% cells with MIB-1 activity. Besides the huge number of cells expressing the proliferation-associated antigen, no mitoses, except for a rare, possibly pycnotic mitosis, could be detected. It is assumed that owing to delayed fixati

A case of chondromatosis of the upper ankle joint in childhood is described. It is a monoarticular disease with a good prognosis, frequently without known prior trauma or inflammation, although often free fragments of cartilage are seen in the joint cavities. It originates from the synovium of the joint, and is known in the literature as Reichel syndrome.

A 32-year-old man complained of left gonalgia for 2 years and noticed a soft part tumor on the lateral side of his left knee. Roentgenograms showed some small calcified shadows at the same site of the tumor. Arthroscopy revealed a lateral meniscus to be an incomplete discoid with degenerative tears. At the operation, a multilocular soft part tumor was noticed in continuity with the lateral meniscus macroscopically. Small, loose bodies and gelatinous fluid were found in the cavity of the tumor. Histologically loose bodies were chondroma and the soft part tumor was meniscal cyst. The meniscal cy

The case presented is a 22-year-old man with previously treated synovial chondromatosis of the shoulder. He subsequently presented with pain and tenderness above the biceps tendon. Magnetic resonance imaging and radiographs revealed recurrent synovial chondromatosis in the biceps tendon sheath. The patient underwent an open procedure to remove the loose bodies and partial tenosynovectomy. The patient has subsequently done well and resumed normal activities. To our knowledge there are no reported cases of synovial chondromatosis involving the biceps tendon sheath in the literature.

Primitive synovial chondromatosis of the hip is quite rare. Through the presentation of four new cases, the authors discuss the pathologic and clinical features of this disease and evaluate the performance of imaging studies, emphasizing the value of CT scan for confirmation of radiographic findings. The indication for surgical treatment is analyzed for each stage of the disease.

The CT findings in two cases of chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint are described. The distinctive feature of the first case was the presence of ossified loose bodies surrounding the head of the condyle, whereas in the second there was clear evidence of arthrosis. Three-dimensional image reconstruction was also used in the first case to obtain a better overall visualization of the changes.

A 60-year-old man suffered locally from a rather aggressive chondromatosis of the elbow. Clinically the presentation was rather uncommon, with some radiological aspects (juxta-articular bone rarefaction) differing from those of ordinary chondromatosis. Neither the pathologist nor the radiologist recognized signs of malignancy. Regional osteoporosis, although rarely described in synovial chondromatosis, was considered as the diagnosis in this patient, but a low grade primitive chondrosarcoma must be sought in such cases.

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare, benign, and metaplastic cause of joint swelling resulting in the formation of cartilaginous nodules in the joint space. It is usually an oligoarticular disorder of large joints that typically manifests in the third to fifth decade of life. Synovial chondromatosis can be primary or secondary depending on whether an underlying etiology can be identified. Diagnosis can be made using imaging studies of the affected joint and confirmed on histopathology. Management of synovial chondromatosis can be done arthroscopically or surgically. We present a case of a 23-yea

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare proliferative disease, characterized by the occurrence of metaplasia in the synovium of the joints. These lesions become pedunculated; with the evolution of the disease they become detached, leading to intra-articular loose-bodies. It occurs more frequently in males between the third and fifth decades of life, usually affecting large joints such as the knee and hip. Smaller joints, such as the ankle, are less frequently affected. Patients report articular pain, blockage, and limited range of motion caused by the loose fragments. As the disease progresses, the

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare lesion in the wrist, but some cases in the distal radioulnar joint have been reported and previous case reports emphasize joint calcifications, shown on preoperative plain radiographs. We report an extremely uncommon case of synovial chondromatosis in the pisotriquetral joint, in which radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging did not demonstrate apparent calcified bodies. In our case, for the accurate diagnosis and treatment, surgical exploration of the joint and synovectomy with removal of loose bodies was performed.

It is well established that irregular bursae can form adjacent to an osteochondroma (bursa exostotica) as a result of mechanical irritation and that these bursae can be complicated by inflammation, hemorrhage, or infection. Bursal chondromatosis is a rare complication, with only seven published cases in the literature according to our searches. We present the case of a 53-year-old female who presented with slowly progressive left hip/thigh pain and was found to have an osteochondroma arising from the lesser trochanter with numerous ossified bodies in the adjacent soft tissues. MRI demonstrated

This article describes a rare case of primary synovial chondromatosis of the hip associated with active tuberculosis of the hip. Twenty four years old patient underwent total hip replacement at our institution. No reactivation of the infection was detected in the four-years follow-up. Clinical and radiological evaluation of our material showed that joint space widening may be the first sign in synovial chondromatosis of the hip. Importantly, if the tuberculosis infection is suspected we have to take the material for bacteriological investigation, regardless of others, obvious diagnosis.

Synovial chondromatosis of the ankle is a rare condition, particularly secondary chondromatosis. In view of a possible traumatic pathogenesis, chondromatosis should be kept in mind in daily trauma and orthopedics practice. Diagnostic imaging gives a first indication. The key to differentiating between the primary and secondary forms is histological identification. This case shows the necessity of exact differentiation, even in cases of a causal link with a specific injury.

Synovial chondromatosis of Hoffa's body is uncommon. Recurrences usually result from incomplete removal of the loose bodies or diseased synovium at the initial surgery. We report a patient with synovial chondromatosis localized into the Hoffa's body who presented with anterior knee pain and mechanical symptoms. At the first arthroscopy, all pathological tissue was removed. At 1-year follow-up, clinical and radiographic examinations were normal. Symptoms recurred at 3 years, when a bony mass in the Hoffa's body was evident on MRI. The mass was removed through a mini-arthrotomy. Histology exclud
