This report describes the case of a patient with mesenchymal chondrosarcoma in the region of tooth #18 that mimicked apical periodontitis. Forty-five days after endodontic treatment, gingival swelling and intense pain were observed. The endodontist suspected a furcation lesion, and the treatment option that the patient chose was extraction of the tooth. Seven days after suture removal, a rapidly growing swelling was seen in the region. The patient was referred to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, who recommended an incisional biopsy after evaluating imaging and clinical findings. Microscopic

INTRODUCTION: Chondrosarcoma is a malignant tumor of cartilaginous origin, which is rarely seen in the maxillofacial region, especially in young individuals. The most common clinical manifestation is painless swelling of the bone. The anterior maxilla and the posterior mandible are considered the most common sites of occurrence, with a slightly higher incidence reported in female compared with male individuals. Chondrosarcomas typically present in older individuals, most commonly during the fourth to sixth decades of life. The most widely accepted treatment approach for this tumor is radical s

Chondrosarcoma is a cancer of cartilage cells, and despite being a common primary bone tumor, tracheal chondrosarcoma is rare with only 18 cases reported in the literature prior to mid-2016. A 60-year-old gentleman presented with progressively increasing cough, severe stridor, and production of phlegm for approximately 2 years. On admission to our tertiary care hospital, he developed complete obstructive apnea within an hour, and was intubated. A tracheal biopsy was performed, followed by resection. Histopathology confirmed chondrosarcoma of the trachea. The patient tolerated the procedure ver

Chondrosarcoma is a very uncommon malignant primary bone tumor, especially, it occurs extremely rare in the spine. A 52-year-old man was admitted to the emergency room with sudden paraplegia. Twelve hours prior to a paraplegic event, he visited an outpatient clinic with discomfort and tenderness around the medial border of the right scapular, and his neurologic status was absolutely intact. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a lobulated soft tissue mass from T3 to T5, which extended to the epidural space. Computed tomography scans showed soft tissue mass on the spinal posterior arch and osteoly

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma (ESMC) is a rare tumor seen more often in men. It is seen to arise from soft tissue of lower extremity or buttocks. We report a case of soft tissue swelling of left labium majus in a 66-year-old female. Patient underwent wide excision with uneventful postoperative course. Histopathology of specimen confirmed it to be ESMC. Patient refused adjuvant therapy. Followup of 1 year has shown her to be disease- and symptom- free. Only two cases arising from vulva have been reported in literature . This is the third case and first from Indian subcontinent. A brief re

Dedifferentiated chondrosarcomas are highly malignant tumors characterized by conventional low-grade chondrosarcoma with abrupt transition to foci that have dedifferentiated into a higher-grade noncartilaginous more aggressive sarcoma. The dedifferentiated component, an osteosarcoma or fibrosarcoma, determines the prognosis. Its identification is key for management. A diagnosis of dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma should be suggested by the presence of "tumoral dimorphism" with cartilaginous component and aggressive lytic component invading adjacent soft tissues.

This is a case report of an extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (ESMC) that originally occurred in the retroperitoneum of a 24-year-old female and later metastasized to the left proximal humerus. Mesenchymal chondrosarcomas are very rare in comparison to conventional chondrosarcomas and even more so when arising from an extraskeletal location. In this report, we discuss the major characteristics of ESMC and offer a review of the current knowledge regarding this rare disease entity.

A 52-year-old man presented with symptoms of progressive cervical radiculomyelopathy. A myelogram showed an intradural block at the C-6 level. Magnetic resonance T1-weighted imaging revealed a hypointense, sausage-shaped mass extending from C-3 to C-6, located posterolaterally on the right side and pushing the spinal cord to the left and anteriorly. At surgery, a mass was found attached solely to the pia mater, with a normal arachnoid and dura mater overlying it. The mass was excised completely and microscopic examination identified a mesenchymal chondrosarcoma. The patient was symptom-free 6

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is an uncommon small-cell neoplasm of bone and soft tissue, the chondrogenic nature of which has been generally accepted. However, the phenotypic attributes of the small-cell population in this neoplasm have not been well characterized, and its relationship to "precartilage mesenchyme" remains unclear. In an attempt to address this issue, we performed an immunohistochemical analysis of nine cases, using antibodies to vimentin, S100 protein, Leu-7 antigen, neuron-specific enolase, synaptophysin, desmin, muscle-specific actin, cytokeratin, and epithelial membrane antig

Evaluation of a series of 12 chordoid sarcomas suggests that there is a wider range of histological features in this entity then previously appreciated. Six of the lesions had a typical tumor cell organization and a mixture of cellular and myxoid stromal components, while the remaining cases were atypical because of a more solid growth pattern. Four of the 12 cases, that included both typically myxoid and more cellular examples, had small foci with hyalinized stroma segragating individual or small groups of tumor cells with and without lacunar spaces. Two atypical cases revealed more extensive

BACKGROUND: Chondrosarcoma is a malignant neoplasm characterized by the production of a cartilaginous matrix.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 58-year-old male patient referred to the maxillofacial surgery and traumatology service due to swelling in the posterior region of the right maxilla, with a duration of 8 months, and a previous history of a fibro-osseous lesion in the region. Intraoral examination revealed a rounded lesion with ulceration, firm upon palpation, in the area of teeth 17 and 18. The panoramic radiograph revealed a radiopaque lesion with a flocculated pattern in the ri

Chondrosarcomas of the pelvis represent a challenge in clinical management because surgical resection is the only effective therapeutic option, given the resistance to radiotherapy and chemotherapy of malignant chondroid tumors. Reconstruction after resection involves critical structures, such as the acetabulum or hip joint, and is a demanding surgical procedure with high morbidity. Complications are frequent due to the complex anatomy of the pelvis, which on the one hand makes it difficult to obtain adequate surgical margins, and on the other hand, the various implants designed for reconstruc

CASE: A 73-year-old male patient presented with a 3-month history of back pain. In bone scintigraphy and the FDG PET-CT scan (fluorodeoxyglucose positron-emission computed tomography), highly suspect uptake levels were found in TH12-L1. Accordingly, an osteodestructive process was found on MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). Following a successfully performed biopsy of TH12, histologic analysis of the bone material revealed a chondrosarcoma (G1; T4N2M0). Complete resection of the tumor was successfully performed, since chondrosarcoma are resistant to radiation and chemotherapy.

Chondrosarcoma of the nasal septum is a rare malignancy. Its early diagnosis is difficult because of its non-specific sinonasal complaints. We report a case report of a 72-year-old woman who presented with progressive nasal obstruction and anosmia. Nasal endoscopy showed a nasal mass obstructing both nasal cavities, which was not separable from the nasal septum. Endoscopic biopsy confirmed chondrosarcoma. The tumour was operated on with complete margins by an endoscopic approach. The clinical presentation of the disease, diagnosis and treatment of this case, and a review of the literature are

Laryngeal chondrosarcoma is rare and accounts for 0.2% of all larynx malignancies. Although chondrosarcoma is the most common sarcoma seen in the larynx, laryngeal involvement by cartilage tumors is rare. In this article, we aimed to present the differential diagnosis of chondrosarcoma located in the thyroid cartilage, which is a rare site, in a 75-year-old male patient. The patient underwent total laryngectomy by the otolaryngology department. The macroscopy of the laryngectomy material sent to the pathology laboratory revealed a 3x2 cm tumor with a polypoid extension to the lumen from the bo
