Chordomas are rare, slowly growing, locally aggressive neoplasms of bone that arise from embryonic remnants of the notochord. These tumors typically occur in the axial skeleton and have a proclivity for the spheno-occipital region of the skull base and sacral regions. In adults, 50% of chordomas involve the sacrococcygeal region, 35% occur at the base of the skull near the spheno-occipital area, and 15% are found in the vertebral column. Craniocervical chordomas most often involve the dorsum sella, clivus, and nasopharynx. Chordomas are divided into conventional, chondroid, and dedifferentiate

Chondroid chordoma commonly presents as clival osseous and extradural mass. A 15-year-old boy presented with progressive visual deficit, headaches and diplopia since three years. Computed tomography (CT scan) showed a skull base tumour, but was wrongly reported at the time as chronic sphenoidal sinusitis and nasal polyps. In the past three months, he developed dysphagia, urinary retention and constipation. Terminally, he had weakness of all limbs. Fundoscopy showed optic atrophy. Temporal and spatial variation in symptoms led to a clinical diagnosis of multiple sclerosis with optic neuritis. P

A case of chordoma involving the thoracic spine (T12) is reported. The plain film findings included lytic obstruction and partial collapse of a single vertebral body. Noncontrast CT and CT following Metrizamide myelography revealed vertebral body destruction with paravertebral and intraspinal soft tissue masses. Unusual findings in the case included a photon deficient area on nuclear medicine corresponding to the lesion and normal vascularity on spinal angiography. We know of no previous report describing chordoma as a "cold" defect on bone scanning.

BACKGROUND: Chordoma, an age-dependent rare cancer, arises from notochordal remnants. Fewer than 5% of chordomas occur in children. Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant neurocutaneous syndrome characterised by abnormal tissue growths in multiple organ systems. Reports of chordoma in children with TSC suggest that TSC1 and TSC2 mutations may contribute to chordoma aetiology.
METHODS: To determine whether the 10 TSC-associated childhood chordomas reported in the literature are representative of chordoma in the general paediatric population, the authors compared age at diagn

Autopsy of a 16-y-old, castrated male Pomeranian dog revealed an incidental, friable, tan mass attached to the base of the skull. The mass stretched from the sella turcica to the foramen magnum, anatomically corresponding to the clivus. The mass neither firmly adhered to the cranium nor the medulla oblongata. No associated neurologic signs had been observed. Histologically, the mass had nests of round cells and islands of immature chondroid matrix. At the periphery of the chondroid matrix, physaliphorous cells with hyperchromatic nuclei were identified. Histochemical (von Kossa, Watanabe silve

Chordomas are uncommon, locally invasive chordate tumors, which are mostly observed in the axial skeleton. Numerous papers have described similar patients around different anatomic locations; however, rare document previously reported that intracranial chordoma was associated with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). The authors report a 51-year-old male patient with a history of right radical nephrectomy for ccRCC presented to us with progressive blurred vision. Ophthalmic examination showed vision loss and visual field defects. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated pituitary tumor with

UNLABELLED: Chordoma is a rare malignant tumor with predilection for the sacrum. A favorable outcome depends on early diagnosis and surgical excision with tumor free margins.
AIM: To review the incidence and prevalence of sacral chordoma and the appropriate surgical management and formulate a criteria for early diagnosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty eight articles on the subject of sacral chordoma and extrapolated data of clinical and surgical significance.
RESULTS: The commonest presenting feature in patients with sacral chordoma was lower back pain which was worse on sitting and up to a

We here report the case of a 40-year-old man with primary pulmonary chordomas. Although an abnormality had been noted on a chest radiograph at age 26 years, the patient had not undergone further examination at that time because he was asymptomatic. Standard chest radiographs and computed tomography showed slow-growing, multiple bilateral pulmonary nodules. Two tumors were resected thoracoscopically to obtain a diagnosis. Pathologic examination resulted in a diagnosis of chordomas. Subsequent systemic examination revealed no additional lesions, not even in the axial skeleton. The patient is ali

Chordomas are low-grade malignant tumors that are locally aggressive and have the potential to metastasize. They most often occur in the sacrococcygeal and spheno-occipital portions of the vertebral column. Morphologically similar tumors have been found outside the axial skeleton and are referred to as extra-axial chordomas. Several case reports have described the radiologic, microscopic, and immunologic profiles of these tumors and their similarities to axial chordomas. The authors report a 24-year-old man who presented with a mass in his left hand and underwent surgical excision. Specimens s

Chordomas are rare and slowly growing malignant bone tumors which mostly occur in adults. These bone tumors are characterized by epithelial and mesenchymal aspects. It is suggested that they arise from remnants of the notochord because they are found along the axial skeleton (e.g. clival, spinal and sacrococcygeal locations). It appears that cytogenetic aberrations are not randomly found in this tumor group. Loss of chromosomal material (e.g. 1p, 3p, 10q, 13q and 14q) is more frequently found than gain of material (e.g. 7q, especially 7q33). Several studies demonstrated brachyury expression (T

Chondroid chordoma is an extremely rare tumour with an annual incidence of around 0.1 cases per 100,000population. Involvement of the thoracic vertebrae may be present in 2-5% of cases. Definitive diagnosis usually requires a suitable distinction between this and other mesenchymal tumours such as chondrosarcomas, so immunohistochemical analysis is virtually mandatory. In spite of its slow-growing nature, chondroid chordoma tends to relapse, and it may eventually become malignant, often jeopardising the patient's prognosis. Although surgery remains the main therapeutic approach, research into t

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate factors that contribute to improved local control and survival. In addition, we sought to define the expected morbidity associated with treatment.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Sacral chordomas are rare tumors presumed to arise from notochordal cells. Local recurrence presents a major problem in the management of these tumors and it has been correlated with survival. Resection of sacral tumors is associated with significant morbidity.
METHODS: Forty-two patients underwent resection for sacral chordom

Sacral chordomas are rare, slow-growing tumours that are amenable to surgery, but unfortunately often diagnosed late. The aim of the study was to identify presenting symptoms, which may aid diagnosis and reduce the treatment time. Forty-four patients were identified with sacral chordoma between 1989 and 2006. Clinical and pathological records were reviewed retrospectively to elicit the symptoms recorded prior to diagnosis, duration of symptoms, surgical treatment, size of tumour and survival. Eleven patients were excluded, leaving 33 patients in the study group. Thirty-one patients had chordom

Invasive growth of chordoma is accompanied by severe destruction of adjacent bone tissue, a fact that requires high proteolytic activity at the tumor invasion fronts. In this context, cathepsin K is a candidate molecule. It is a protease with high collagenolytic and elastinolytic activity and previously thought to be restricted to osteoclasts and osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. In this study, 44 cases of chordoma of sphenooccipital localization, and 10 embryo-fetal specimens including chorda dorsalis were studied immunohistochemically for their expression of cathepsin K. In 4 additional s

BACKGROUND: Complete excision of sacrococcygeal chordoma is necessary at initial surgery due to its poor sensitivity to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. However, due to the anatomic characteristics of this tumor, intralesional excision tends to be employed, resulting in local recurrences in many patients.
METHODS: The clinical features and results of surgical treatment of 13 patients with sacrococcygeal chordoma who were treated at the Chiba Cancer Center and Chiba University beginning in 1972 were analyzed.
RESULTS: Intralesional excision was performed in eight patients, marginal excision in

Sacrococcygeal chordoma is one of the retrorectal tumors. Relative rarity and anatomical location of this may lead to difficulty in diagnosis and surgical treatment. We report a case of sacrococcygeal chordoma successfully treated by high sacral resection by a posterior approach, in which the co-operative efforts of gastroenterological surgeons and an orthopedic surgeon were employed. A 64-year-old man with a long term continued vague anal pain was referred to our hospital. Digital rectal examination revealed an elastic hard mass presacrally. Plain sagittal radiograph, CT, barium enema showed

We present a case of a large clival chordoma in a 54-year-old female with a past medical history of Turner's syndrome and a 1.5-year history of nasal congestion. The tumor was extending in the nasopharynx to both pterygopalatine fossae. An expanded endoscopic endonasal approach was selected. Stereotactic navigation was utilized. Bilateral transmaxillary approach with ethmoidectomy was performed, and a transclival corridor to the deepest portion of the tumor was created. The tumor was successfully dissected off the medial walls of the cavernous sinuses. Gross-macroscopic resection was achieved.
