This article reports a retrospective analysis of 149 evaluable cases of molar pregnancy managed at Women's Hospital, Los Angeles County/University of Southern California Medical Center, from January 1977, through June, 1983. A young woman with an occult bronchogenic carcinoma presented with secondary amenorrhea and an elevated beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin that was mistakenly attributed to pregnancy. Physicians should be aware that this carcinoma may present solely with an elevated beta human chorionic gonadotropin value, and the potential exists for confusion with a pregnancy state in women of childbearing age.

We studied a young man with primary liver cancer associated with feminization that disappeared after removal of the tumor. The ectopic production of the beta-subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is described in a patient with an anaplastic carcinoma. After chemotherapy the marker decreased in a logarithmic fashion to undetectable levels but the neoplasm progressed and the patient died. The specificity of the beta-subunit of hCG is discussed.
