Neuromuscular choristoma of the internal auditory meatus.

Choristomas of the internal auditory meatus are exceedingly rare tumors. In most cases, neuromuscular choristomas have initially been misdiagnosed as vestibular schwannomas (VS). No known characteristics in the clinical presentation or in imaging exist distinguishing these tumors from VS, which are the most common tumors at this location [Smith et al.: AJNR Am J Neuroradiol 1997;18:327-329]. We present a case of a neuromuscular choristoma of the 8th cranial nerve that was operated because of growth demonstrated on two MRI scans 3 months apart. We were convinced that this young patient would re

Fibromatosis: a potential sequela of neuromuscular choristoma.

OBJECT: Neuromuscular choristoma (NMC) is a rare peripheral nerve lesion in which mature skeletal muscle fibers lie within the nerve and its fascicles. Given limited follow-up, its natural history is poorly understood. The occurrence of aggressive fibromatosis in one of the authors' patients and its occurrence in reported cases suggests an etiological relationship between the 2 lesions. This study attempts to explain the association and its frequency. METHODS: All cases of NMCs seen in consultation or treated at the Mayo Clinic were identified. Demographic and clinical data were reviewed in c

Chondroid choristoma: report of a rare case.

An 11-year-old girl reported with an intraoral swelling which was noticed by her mother at birth and increased to its present size during the last year A thorough clinical examination did not shed a conclusive diagnosis. This case highlights and discusses the history, clinical features, histologic features, differential diagnosis and the clinical management of this lesion. Awareness of such an entity will enrich the knowledge of the pediatric dentists who may be the first ones to encounter such cases in their day-to-day practice.

Intestinal choristoma in the midcervical region of a dog.

A 5-year-old, neutered male, mixed-breed dog was evaluated for a fluctuant mass in the right midcervical region. The mass recurred following aspiration of its contents and after removal of the right sublingual and mandibular salivary glands. The lateral midcervical location of the mass and the serous nature of the fluid within the mass were inconsistent with a salivary mucocele. Excisional biopsy was curative and revealed an intestinal choristoma.

Choristomas of the seventh and eighth cranial nerves.

Choristomas, masses of normal tissues in aberrant locations, contain smooth muscle fibers and fibrous tissues. We describe the MR imaging features of two choristomas located in the internal auditory canals and arising from the facial and vestibulocochlear nerves. Both lesions enhanced with contrast material. In one case, enhancement was seen in the geniculate ganglion and greater superficial petrosal nerve. In the other, a medial component enhanced less than the lateral component did.

[Salivary gland choristoma in the middle ear].

A choristoma is a non-neoplastic proliferation of histologically normal tissue occurring at an abnormal site. The first known Danish case of a salivary gland choristoma in the middle ear is presented. This is a very rare condition of which only 20 cases have been reported. A 16-year-old male was referred to the ENT clinic with a 60-70 dB mixed hearing loss on the right ear. Exploratory tympanotomy showed a lobulated mass attached to the horizontal portion of the facial nerve, which had an abnormal course lateral to the stapes. The incus and stapes were abnormal with no continuity. Biopsy showe

Lacrimal gland choristoma of the ciliary body.

A 22-month-old girl was found to have a pigmented mass of the ciliary body of the right eye. Five months later the globe was enucleated because of enlargement of the tumor and the appearance of brown pigment on the adjacent epibulbar surface. Histopathologic examination disclosed a lacrimal gland choristoma of the ciliary body with involvement of the limbal conjunctival surface and superficial sclera. Choristomas of the lacrimal gland are rare and only eight cases have been reported previously to occur intraocularly. Most of these cases showed extrascleral involvement which suggests that the a

Salivary gland choristoma of the middle ear.

A 5-year-old female with a so-called "salivary gland choristoma" in the middle ear is reported, believed to represent the nineteenth such case in the literature. The nineteen cases are reviewed. The only consistent symptom was deafness. Aural discharge, tinnitus and otalgia occurred occasionally. The findings included a middle ear mass, conduction deafness and sometimes facial and external ear developmental disorders. At surgery a lobulated firm mass in the posterosuperior tympanum was usually found, being mobile and often pedunculated from a dehiscent part of the horizontal facial nerve. Ossi

Intradural extramedullary spinal choristoma: A case report.

RATIONALE: A choristoma is a rare and benign neoplasm characterized by the presence of normal tissue in an anomalous anatomical location. In contrast, choristoma tend to occur in other body regions rather than within the spinal canal. Before our findings, only 4 cases of intraspinal choristoma had been recorded. Because its composition is complex and very rare, routine examinations, such as magnetic resonance imaging, are difficult to diagnose, and the possibility of its occurrence is often missed in clinical diagnosis. If there is no specificity in its components, such as in this case, even p

Epibulbar complex choristoma associated with nevus sebaceus.

We encountered an infant with nevus sebaceus of Jadassohn who was born with a striking pedunculated mass on the superotemporal aspect of the anterior sclera and limbus of the left eye. In addition, two small choroidal colobomas were seen in the papillomacular bundle area of the same eye. Histopathologic examination of the excised mass revealed a mixture of ectodermal and mesodermal elements, including cartilage and bone. These findings led to the rare diagnosis of epibulbar complex choristoma.

Choristoma: esophageal stenosis, due to tracheobronchial remnants.

This communication describes one case treated by the authors and reviews 27 reports of congenital esophageal stenosis caused by tracheobronchial remnants. Histologic examination of the case showed respiratory mucous glands with respiratory epithelium and hyaline cartilage. The anomalies presumably result from failure of normal embryonic separation of the respiratory tract from the primitive esophagus. Primary resection is recommended as definitive treatment. Dilatation of the stenosis affords only temporary relief.

Orbital Choristoma in a Jaguar (Panthera onca).

OBJECTIVE: To report the diagnosis and treatment of an orbital choristoma in a 2-year-old male jaguar (Panthera onca). ANIMAL STUDIED: Jaguar (Panthera onca). PROCEDURES: The patient presented with unilateral periorbital edema, strabismus, exophthalmia, epiphora, and conjunctivitis. Initial diagnosis was achieved via general physical and ophthalmic exams, ultrasound, computed tomography, and cytology. The cystic structure was surgically excised and submitted for histopathology. RESULTS: Histopathology provided definitive diagnosis of a choristomatous cyst of lacrimal or conjunctival origin.

Orbital neuromuscular choristoma of the ophthalmic nerve.

INTRODUCTION: Neuromuscular choristoma (NC) is a rare tumor composed of striated muscle fibers admixed with nerve fibers that often affects large peripheral nerve trunks in children. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case in the literature of a NC of the ophthalmic nerve in an adult. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 27-year-old woman presented with a 20-day history of left periorbital headache radiating to the frontotemporal region, with associated tearing, nausea, and vomiting. The examination was normal, except for hypoesthesia in the distribution of the first trigeminal nerve bra

Salivary gland choristoma of the middle ear.

Choristoma of the middle ear is a rare condition characterized by the presence of normal salivary gland tissue in the middle ear space. Salivary gland choristomas are benign lesions that are frequently associated with ossicular chain and facial nerve anomalies. Total surgical excision is indicated when there is no risk of damaging the facial nerve. We describe a new case of salivary gland choristoma of the middle ear, and we discuss the etiology, histologic features, and management of such lesions. Our patient was a 22-year-old woman in whom we surgically removed a whitish retrotympanic mass.

Cartilaginous choristoma of the tongue with an immunohistochemical study.

By definition, choristomas are normal tissues found in anomalous topography. The cartilaginous features of these lesions are rare in the soft tissues of the oral cavity. The majority of cartilaginous choristomas of the tongue--the primary site of emergence of the oropharynx--are associated with adipose, fibrous or bone tissues--apart from that, only a few of these were confirmed by an immunohistochemical study. The neoplasm exclusively composed of chondromatous tissue is extremely rare in the tongue. This paper reports the clinical, surgical and pathological characteristics of a cartilaginous

Vertebral choristoma in lipomyelomeningocele: a case report.

Lipomeningocele is a type of occult spinal dysraphism characterized by a subcutaneous lipomatous mass that protrudes through a midline bony defect. We report a rare presentation of this condition--a vertebral choristoma wherein the lipomatous mass displaced the normally formed posterior elements--lamina and spinous process of L4 vertebra dorsally to an abnormal location in the absence of a bony defect.
