Rosettes and pseudorosettes in veterinary neuropathology.

Rosettes and pseudorosettes are morphologic cell arrangements found in many neuroepithelial neoplasms in human medicine, including embryonal nervous system tumors (neuroblastoma, medulloblastoma, pineoblastoma, and retinoblastoma), non-embryonal nervous system tumors (ependymoma, astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma, and choroid plexus tumors), and other extraneural neuroepithelial neoplasms. Although these structures are also described in neuroepithelial neoplasms of domestic animals, their frequency is still poorly characterized or inconsistently documented in veterinary medicine. Furthermore, ros

Nodular sclerochoroidopathy simulating choroidal malignancy.

A 55-year-old man who had multiple subretinal and choroidal yellowish lesions and episcleral nodules for 1.5 years was diagnosed as having nodular sclerochoroidopathy after developing classic features of posterior scleritis with choroidal and serous retinal detachment. Long-term therapy with steroids in combination with mycophenolate mofetil resulted in regressed posterior scleritis and nodular lesions, as well as improved visual acuity. Nodular sclerochoroidopathy should be suspected in patients with subretinal and choroidal lesions and should be distinguished from choroidal neoplasm.

Choroid plexus papilloma in a mature cystic teratoma of ovary: A rare case report.

Mature cystic teratoma of the ovary is the most common type of germ cell tumor. It constitutes approximately 20% of all ovarian neoplasms. As a rare occurrence, however, several types of benign and malignant tumours developing secondarily in dermoid cysts have been reported. Those of central nervous origin are almost exclusively gliomas of astrocytic, ependymal or oligodendroglial lineage. Choroid plexus tumors are unusual intracranial tumors which comprised of only 0.4-0.6% of all brain tumors. These are neuroectodermal in origin and similar in structure to a normal choroid plexus in the form

Pre-operative embolization for staged treatment of infantile choroid plexus papilloma.

Choroid plexus papillomas (CPPs) are benign but rare neuroepithelial neoplasms of the choroid plexus that represent the non-malignant form of a spectrum of tumors of the choroid plexus. The vast majority of CPPs present in children under 5 years of age. Some CPPs are diagnosed prenatally, but many of them reach a large size before diagnosis. CPPs typically present with signs and symptoms of hydrocephalus. Treatment of these tumors has traditionally been with surgical resection. Large CPPs in young children present a challenge due to risk of high blood loss during resection. Here, the authors d

Embolization of a third ventricular choroid plexus papilloma: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus tumors are rare neoplasms that are typically found in the lateral ventricles. They have infrequently been reported in the third ventricle, and treatment strategies have varied. OBSERVATIONS: The authors described a 6-month-old patient who presented with irritability and hypotonia. The patient was found to have a large tumor in the third ventricle with obstructive hydrocephalus. Preoperative angiography revealed a feeding artery from the right medial posterior choroidal artery (MPChA). The feeding artery was effectively embolized, and the patient subsequently receive

Choroid plexus carcinoma.

The authors report a case of carcinoma of the choroid plexus and review the 22 cases reported since 1844 that adhere to the criteria for primary choroid plexus carcinoma. Two-thirds of the tumors are found in children and all of these are located in the lateral ventricles. In adults most of the tumors are present in the fourth ventricle. Differentiation of this neoplasm from papillary ependymomas, choroid plexus papillomas, secondary carcinomas, and "collision tumors" is discussed.

Choroid plexus papilloma: magnetic resonance, computed tomography, and angiographic observations.

Choroid plexus papillomas are rare intracranial neoplasms that are generally benign in nature. They are seen in both children and adults and have a male preponderance. Magnetic resonance imaging, a noninvasive diagnostic tool, demonstrated the intraventricular location and the surrounding anatomy with striking clarity, more effectively than angiography and computed tomography scanning.

Ectopic anterior pituitary corticotropic tumour in a six-year-old boy. Histological, ultrastructural and immunocytochemical study.

The report documents a silent, oncocytic, ACTH-producing ectopic anterior pituitary tumour in a 6-year-old boy. The invasive intrahemispheric neoplasm had no connection with the pituitary gland, the sella turcica or the sphenoid sinuses. The apparent similarities existing between this tumour, some choroid plexus carcinomas and steroid-producing neoplasms are discussed.

Choroid plexus carcinoma.

Choroid plexus carcinoma is an uncommon neoplasm of the central nervous system most commonly found in the pediatric population. It is associated with a dismal prognosis, especially if incompletely resected. Accurate histopathologic diagnosis is imperative, and this neoplasm should always be included in the differential diagnosis of a papillary intraventricular tumor. Histopathologic features include blurring of papillary architecture, layers of neoplastic choroid plexus epithelial cells with pleomorphic nuclei, increased nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratio, increased mitotic activity, areas of necros

Atypical choroidal nevus in a subject with a germline PALB2 pathogenic variant.

Recent evidence suggests that PALB2 variants may increase risk for the development of uveal melanoma and uveal melanocytic neoplasms. Here we report a case of an atypical choroidal nevus in a patient with a personal history of cancer and pathogenic PALB2 germline variant. A 75-year-old white female presented with an elevated predominantly amelanotic choroidal lesion OS. On examination and ophthalmic imaging, the mass measured 8.8 mm × 6.5 mm × 1.5 mm. The mass showed predominantly medium to high reflectivity on diagnostic A-scan and acoustic hollowing on B-scan. OCT over the lesion showed no s

Exophytic choroid plexus papilloma of the fourth ventricle presenting with cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus papillomas are rare benign neoplasms that arise from the ventricular choroid plexus and are considered to be of ependymal origin. They are slow-growing lesions, are commonly associated with hydrocephalus, and are prone to hemorrhage spontaneously. Most of them are located in the posterior fossa in adults, the fourth ventricle being the most common location. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of a 61-year-old male patient with a fourth ventricular exophytic choroid plexus papilloma extending caudally into the foramen magnum causing obstructive hydrocephalus. Choroid plexus tumors: problems in diagnosis and management.

Choroid plexus tumors are uncommon neoplasms of the central nervous system. A series of 11 cases from the Vancouver General and British Columbia Children's Hospitals, treated during the last 12 years, are reviewed. Some of the management problems commonly encountered with these tumors are discussed. Many of these tumors are associated with severe hydrocephalus at the time of diagnosis, and the perioperative management of this hydrocephalus remains a matter of some debate. The timing of and the necessity for shunting are major considerations. Large subdural fluid collections are often discovere

[Ossified choroid plexus papilloma--case report].

While the calcification has been documented radiologically in 4 - 25 percent of the cases with choroid plexus papilloma, the ossification of choroid plexus papilloma has been reported only in 3 cases on literature. In this paper, we present a case of large ossified choroid plexus papilloma in the right lateral ventricle. A 35-year-old man was admitted with left hemiparesis and headache. Skull X-rays showed an abnormal calcified mass (25 mm x 23 mm x 14 mm) in the right temporal region. CT scan revealed an abnormal high density area protruding into the right lateral ventricle, and a low density

Intra-fourth-ventricular choroid plexus papilloma miming ependymoma.

Choroid plexus papilloma (CPP), a low incidence central nervous system (CNS) tumor, typically develops as an intraventricular neoplasm arising from the epithelium of the choroid plexus. Infratentorial CPP is predominantly clustered in adults with roughly 70% in the fourth ventricle, while supratentorial CPP commonly found in the lateral ventricles, is the most frequent location in children. The clinical and imaging features of CPP are not typical and may induce the misdiagnosis as other types of primary brain tumors. In this paper, we described a fourth-ventricular CPP that was misdiagnosed as

Differential retention of rhodamine 123 by avian sarcoma virus-induced glioma and normal brain tissue of the rat in vivo.

The time course of uptake, retention and clearance of the cationic lipophilic dye, rhodamine 123 (Rh123), within the central nervous system was qualitatively evaluated in rats. Weanling rats were injected intracerebrally with avian sarcoma virus, which induced malignant gliomas in situ before injection of Rh123. Comparison was made of the amount of fluorescence of Rh123 within the normal cerebral cortex, myelinated tracts of the brain, meninges, choroid plexus, and neoplastic foci at 1, 4, 8, 12 and 24 hours after intravenous injection. Fluorescence microscopy was utilized to identify tissues

[Ultrastructural study of papillomas of the choroid plexus].

The choroid plexus papillomas are rare neoplasms. They constitute about 0.5 per 100 of all intracranial tumors. From a histological point of view they are generally benign tumors. However they give a high mortality rate due to their location near vital structures, the rapid production of intracranial hypertension, and the rich vascularity making risky the surgical treatment.

Immunohistochemical Analysis of Cerebral Intraparenchymal Choroid Plexus Tumor: Case Report.

BACKGROUND: It is very rare for a choroid plexus tumor to occur intraparenchymally in the absence of a relation to the choroid plexus. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A case of cerebral intraparenchymal choroid plexus tumor in a 30-year-old woman presenting with left hemiparesis is described. Brain magnetic resonance imaging depicted a large cystic mass in the right frontal lobe. Tumor resection was performed by right frontal craniotomy. No connection with the choroid plexus was observed during the operation. Histologically, the tumor exhibited a glandular structure with a papillary pattern suggesting

Preoperative radiotherapy in the management of posterior fossa choroid plexus papillomas.

Although primary radical removal is the procedure of choice in the treatment of choroid plexus papillomas, the age of the child, the size and/or location of the tumor and an above average surgical risk can make advisable the use of a first stage shunt operation, with section of the tentorium if there are signs of upwards tentorial herniation. The present two observations clearly demonstrate that radiotherapy shrinks the vascular stroma of these tumors, thus reducing its size and vascularity making possible the postponement of radical surgery and greatly simplifying the final radical removal of

Uveal melanoma and similar lesions: the role of magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography.

The uvea provides a suitable substrate for tumor cells because it is the most vascular portion of the eye. Most primary and metastatic ocular neoplasms involve the choroid, with the most common being malignant melanoma. We review the features of uveal melanomas seen on MRI and CT images and evaluate certain neoplastic and non-neoplastic intraocular lesions that may simulate uveal melanomas.

Flow cytometric analysis of deoxyribonucleic acid ploidy and proliferation in choroid plexus tumors.

The deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) content of 10 choroid plexus tumors, including 4 malignant tumors and 3 normal choroid plexus controls, was analyzed by flow cytometry to determine whether a ploidy or proliferation rate is a better predictor of tumor behavior than histological features. Nine of 10 neoplasms had both diploid and aneuploid modal populations. One neoplasm and all three control cases had only a diploid peak. Among the tumors, the DNA indices of the aneuploid peaks ranged from 1.1 to 2.2. The percentage of aneuploid cells ranged from 7 to 99, and no distinction was made between beni
