Cobalt-chromium versus titanium alloy rods for correction of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis based on 1-year follow-up: a multicenter randomized controlled clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: For instrumented correction surgery for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), surgeons are increasingly switching from titanium (Ti) alloy rods to stiffer cobalt-chromium (CoCr) rods. The authors conducted the first multicenter randomized controlled clinical trial to investigate whether these materials affect the outcomes in terms of spine correction and quality of life (QOL). This trial was registered at UMIN Clinical Trials Registry on September 3, 2012, under the identifier UMIN000008838 (level of evidence 1). METHODS: Female AIS patients (Lenke types 1-3, patient age 10-19 yea

Metal Alloys Used in Dental Prosthetics and Their Impact on the Oral Microbiome: Narrative Review.

Introduction: One of the fundamental principles of modern medicine, including dentistry, is prevention. However, if treatment is not initiated, tooth loss can occur, necessitating the use of dental prostheses to restore the function and aesthetics of the stomatognathic system. The oral microbiome is a complex ecosystem that is sensitive to external factors, including the biomaterials used to manufacture dental prostheses. Objectives: This narrative literature review aims to identify and compare the effects of various metal alloys used in dentistry, specifically high-precious (gold), precious (

Ultrasound-assisted rapid growth of chemically bonded bifunctional mesoporous covalent organic framework submicrospheres on a nickel-chromium alloy support for efficient solid-phase microextraction of bisphenols from water and milk samples.

A layer-by-layer chemical bonding strategy was developed for fast in situ growth of bifunctional mesoporous covalent organic framework submicrospheres (COF SMSs) on the nickel-chromium alloy (Ni-Cr) fiber substrate via the ultrasound-assisted Schiff-base reaction for the first time. COF SMSs showed well-defined morphology, extraordinary high surface area (1211 m2·g-1) and narrow mesopore (2.50 nm) as well as excellent stability. Furthermore, the resulting Ni-Cr fiber presented outstanding adsorption capability and improved selectivity for bisphenols (BPs). Consequently, an attractive SPME-HPLC

Posterior condyle surface damage on retrieved femoral knee components.

Twenty-two retrieved femoral knee components were identified with posterior condyle surface damage on average at 99° flexion (range, 43°-135° flexion). Titanium alloy material transfer and abrasive surface damage were evident on cobalt-chromium alloy femoral components that were in contact with titanium alloy tibial trays. Surface damage on the retrieved Oxinium femoral components (Smith and Nephew, Inc, Memphis, Tenn) that were in contact with titanium alloy tibial trays showed gouging, associated with the removal and cracking of the oxide and exposure of the zirconium-niobium alloy substrate

Oral induction of immunological tolerance to chromium in the guinea pig.

Metal alloys used in dentistry may elicit adverse side-effects. Contact allergic reactions to metals released from such alloys are among the most frequently encountered problems. In an earlier study, we observed that oral contacts with nickel or chromium salts did not sensitize, but rather decreased the risk of subsequent sensitization to these metals. In the present study, we focused on chromium allergy and extended our earlier observations by further dose-response studies. In addition, we compared different chromium valencies as to their potential oral tolerogenic effects. Development of imm

Influence of surface treatment on adherence energy of alloys used in bonded prosthetics.

Usually, shear or tensile tests are used to assess bond strengths between resin and metal. In this study, a cleavage test, the Double Cantilever Beam test, was performed to measure the adherence energy in air and in water between a 4-META resin, and five alloys (palladium, palladium-silver, gold, cobalt-chromium and nickel-chromium alloys) whose surfaces have been treated by sandblasting only or by two methods of silica coating (Silicoater MD, Rocatec) or by painting with a primer (V-Primer). Results showed that, after storage in water, it is difficult to divide the studied alloys into a denta…

Chemical etching solutions for creating micromechanical retention in resin-bonded retainers.

This study introduced three chemical etching solutions capable of producing micromechanical retention in nickel-chromium and nickel-chromium-beryllium alloys used for resin-bonded retainers. The effectiveness of the chemical etching solutions was evaluated with tensile strength tests and photographs at various magnifications with a scanning electron microscope. Chemical etching with the CG-Etch solution produced suitable and uniform microretention whereas the other solutions were not effective on all metal alloys. Significant differences (p < 0.05) relating to tensile bond strengths were noted

Surface preparations for metal frameworks of composite resin veneered prostheses made with an adhesive opaque resin.

Bond strengths of a laboratory developed light-cured composite resin to dental casting alloys were evaluated with a new adhesive opaque resin. The metal specimens were type III gold, nickel-chromium, and cobalt-chromium alloys, while the surface treatments for bonding were heating, Sn plating, and ion coating. The cast metal specimens were "particle blasted" with aluminum oxide and were surface treated. Adhesive 4-META/MMA-TBB opaque resin was applied and a light-cured composite resin was placed over the opaque layer. The prepared specimens were thermocycled in water and shear bond strengths w…

Removal of dental alloys and titanium attenuates trace metals and biological effects on liver and kidney.

To determine whether the potential effects on liver and kidney caused by dental alloys could be reduced or terminated by the removal of nickel-chromium (Ni-Cr) alloy, cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy, and commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti), they were placed in the cheek pouches of Syrian hamsters according to ISO 10993-10. Then, the peak/plateau and end times of trace metals in the blood were determined with or without the removal of the dental alloys. Based on these time points, the trace metals and their effects on liver and kidney were examined. We found that trace metals released from these d

Review of occupational epidemiology of chromium chemicals and respiratory cancer.

Several epidemiologic studies have investigated the association between cancer risk and employment in chromium producing and using industries. Strong and consistent associations have been found between employment in the primary chemical producing industry and the risk for respiratory cancer. Workers employed in chromate pigment production and possibly spray painters of chromate pigment paints appear to be at excess risk of respiratory cancer. Chrome platers may also be at excess risk, although the evidence is limited. A few studies indicate that chromium alloy welding may also be an exposure s
