Integrated metabolomics and bioactivity analysis of new chrysanthemum cultivar petals: Insights into eye-protecting agents.

Chrysanthemum is a globally significant economical crop. Through broadly targeted metabolomics, 58 polyphenols and 65 xanthophylls were quantitatively and qualitatively assessed in chrysanthemum petals. Carotenoids including β-cryptoxanthin, lutein stearate, lutein distearate, lutein dioleate, and lutein oleate, emerged as the primary compounds in both ligulate and tubular flowers, and their levels remaining relatively high and stable during the second to fifth stages of chrysanthemum flower development. However, the compound content varied across developmental stages and tissues. Additionally

Comparative Analysis of Anti-Inflammatory Flavones in Chrysanthemum indicum Capitula Using Primary Cultured Rat Hepatocytes.

The capitula of Chrysanthemum indicum Linné or C. morifolium Ramatuelle (Kikuka in Japanese) are included in several formulae of Kampo medicines (traditional Japanese medicines), such as Chotosan, which is used for headache and dizziness. Luteolin, the principal constituent of C. indicum, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. However, the effects of other flavonoids on this crude drug have not yet been thoroughly investigated. To evaluate and compare anti-inflammatory effects, we used primary cultured rat hepatocytes, which produce proinflammatory mediators, such as nitric oxide (N

Comprehensive characterization of a floral mutant reveals the mechanism of hooked petal morphogenesis in Chrysanthemum morifolium.

The diversity of form of the chrysanthemum flower makes this species an ideal model for studying petal morphogenesis, but as yet, the molecular mechanisms underlying petal shape development remain largely unexplored. Here, a floral mutant, which arose as a bud sport in a plant of the variety 'Anastasia Dark Green', and formed straight, rather than hooked petals, was subjected to both comparative morphological analysis and transcriptome profiling. The hooked petals only became discernible during a late stage of flower development. At the late stage of 'Anastasia Dark Green', genes related to ch

A sulfated pectin polysaccharide from Chrysanthemum morifolium induces ferroptosis in pancreatic cancer by stabilizing TFRC.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the most malignant tumor with dismal prognosis. The chemotherapy effect of PDAC is limited and has severe side effects. Hence, identifying a natural leading compound with high efficacy against PDAC is urgently needed. Chrysanthemum morifolium (C. morifolium), a traditional Chinese medicinal herb with reported antitumor properties, was hypothesized to contain polysaccharides with therapeutic efficacy against PDAC. A novel homogeneous RG-I pectin, HJ222, was successfully isolated and purified. Structural analysis shows that HJ222 possesses a backbone co

Chrysanthemum-like nanodrug assembled from hyaluronan-doxorubicin/cisplatin conjugate for targeted synergistic chemotherapy of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is usually diagnosed at advanced stages and has a high mortality rate and a short survival time, posing significant threats to human life and health. Chemotherapy remains the cornerstone of HCC treatment, but it still faces significant challenges of limited monotherapy efficacy and drug resistance. Herein, a stimulus-responsive hyaluronic acid (HA)-based dual-drug conjugate was proposed for efficient targeted synergistic chemotherapy of HCC. The amphiphilic conjugate (HDC) was synthesized by successively grafting doxorubicin (DOX) and cisplatin (CDDP) onto hydraz

Fungal-mediated enhancement of yield and quality in Chrysanthemum morifolium under integrated rotation and organic management.

Continuous cropping obstacles (CCOs), driven by microbial dysbiosis, hinder sustainable Chrysanthemum morifolium production. While rotation and organic amendments are known to alleviate CCOs, their impact on microbial interactomes remains unclear. This study evaluated 10 agronomic treatments during a full cultivation cycle, ranging from monoculture (CK) to integrated rotation systems combined with bio-organic fertilizer or vermicompost (Rot_Org and Rot_Org_Ver), in a field with five-year continuous cropping history of Chrysanthemum morifolium. We integrated soil physicochemical analysis, enzym

Development of an Oral Delivery System for Live Adenovirus Based on Bionic Chrysanthemum Sporopollenin Exine Armor.

Background: The oral application of adenovirus is hindered by its poor in vitro storage stability and rapid degradation by gastric acid. To address this, a biomimetic oral adenovirus delivery system (CSP-AdV@LYO) was constructed based on three key properties of natural chrysanthemum sporopollenin (CSP): chemical inertness, intelligent "acid-shrinking/alkali-swelling" responsiveness, and mucosal adhesion via its spike structures, aiming to enhance oral stability and delivery efficiency. Methods: First, low-allergenic chrysanthemum pollen was screened using proteomics and a zebrafish allergy mod
