Formulation and characterization of 3D printed chickpea protein isolate-mixed cereal dysphagia diet.

The feasibility study of making 3D printed dysphagia diet was undertaken. A mixture of corn flour and buckwheat flour was used as the model cereal and chickpea protein isolate (CPI) was used as the model protein. Printing gels (inks) of the mixed cereal (control) and CPI-cereal mixture were produced by heating the formulations at 95 °C for 30 min and then cooling them to room temperature. The results showed that all the ink formulations containing CPI had higher apparent viscosity, preferable shear thinning behavior and shape supporting characteristics than that of the control. The cohesivenes

Genotype-dependent responses of chickpea to high temperature and moderately increased light.

Our aim was to understand how moderately increased light intensities influenced the response of chickpea to high temperature. Three chickpea genotypes (Acc#3, Acc#7 and Acc#8) were treated at control (26 °C and 300 μmol m-2 s-1 photosynthetic photon flux density/PPFD), high temperature (38 °C and 300 μmol m-2 s-1 PPFD), increased light intensity (26 °C and 600 μmol m-2 s-1 PPFD) and combination of increased light and temperature (38 °C and 600 μmol m-2 s-1 PPFD). The net photosynthetic rate (PN) of Acc#3 and Acc#8 significantly decreased at high temperature regardless of light intensity. The P

In vitro screening of potential anti-cancer chemicals: effect of purine pyrimidine analogues on seed germination.

Germinating Cicer arietinum seeds were used to simulate embryonic tissue for evaluating toxicity of purine and pyrimidine analogues. 6-Mercaptopurine stimulated germination, whereas 8-azaadenine, 8-azaguanine, 2,6-diaminopurine, 6-amino, 2-hydroxypurine and 5-fluorouracil inhibited germination. 6-Methyluracil, 5-aminouracil and methylxanthines, viz. caffeine, theophylline, theobromine and uric acid exhibited little inhibitory effects. RNA synthesis ensued immediately after water imbibition and reached maximum at 12 h of germination. 2,6-Diaminopurine, 8-azaadenine, 8-azaguanine and 5-fluoroura

CRISPR-Cas9 Genome Editing in Mesorhizobium ciceri Through nodC Disruption for Chickpea Symbiosis Studies.

Mesorhizobium ciceri, a nitrogen-fixing symbiont of chickpea (Cicer arietinum), remains genetically challenging to manipulate using conventional homologous recombination approaches, which are labor-intensive and often leave undesirable selection markers. In this protocol, we describe a streamlined genome-editing strategy using a broad-host-range Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)-associated protein 9 (Cas9) system adapted for M. ciceri. We demonstrate the efficacy of this method by targeting nodC, which encodes the N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase required for ch

Selenium-enriched chickpea beverage powders: How particle size shapes composition and functionality.

Sifting of extrudates powders obtained from germinated chickpea flour, with or without selenium biofortification, and with or without the addition of commercial fish oil increased the protein content and solubility. The fine powder with the highest protein content (23.63 g/100 g DW) was that of non-selenized germinated chickpea and fish oil. This formulation had a water solubility index (WSI) of 18.76 % that increased to 37.71 % after sifting. This formulation also had a lower content of rapid digestible starch (29 g/100 g) compared to germinated chickpea powders (33-36 g/100 g), except when s

Tailoring chickpea protein functionality for food applications through supercritical CO2 processing.

This study evaluates the use of supercritical CO2 (SCCO2) as a dual-purpose method for defatting and modulating the functional properties of chickpea protein. Two processing routes were investigated: 1) post-extraction SCCO2 modification of protein obtained from full-fat flour (CP series), and 2) flour defatting followed by protein extract modification with SCCO2 at different pressures (DFCP series). CP0 and DFCP0 refer to proteins from untreated and SCCO2-defatted flours, respectively; CP75-800 and DFCP75-800 underwent additional SCCO2 treatments at indicated pressures. SCCO2 defatting at 850

Mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of isoflavones isolated from chickpea sprouts in treating osteoporosis based on network pharmacology.

Osteoporosis is a systemic bone disease that is caused by multiple factors that lead to an imbalance in bone metabolism. Isoflavones can prevent and treat osteoporosis by regulating bone metabolism through a variety of pathways. The germination of chickpeas can significantly increase their isoflavone contents. However, the use of isoflavones isolated from chickpea sprouts (ICS) to prevent and treat osteoporosis by regulating bone metabolism has not been widely studied. In vivo experimental studies in ovariectomized rats showed that ICS significantly improved femoral bone mineral density (BMD)

Exploring biocontrol and growth-promoting potential of multifaceted PGPR isolated from natural suppressive soil against the causal agent of chickpea wilt.

Chickpea is an important nutritive food crop both for humans and animals. Chickpea wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. ciceris (Foc) results in huge yield losses every year. Chickpea being a food crop requires the development of an eco-friendly bio-pesticide to effectively control the chickpea wilt disease. In this study, more than 50 bacterial stains isolated from the rhizosphere of healthy plants growing in wilt sick soil were examined for their Foc antagonist activities. Out of these, 17 strains showing > 90% growth inhibition of Foc were then characterized for their plant growth-promot

Comparative transcriptomic and metabolite profiling reveals genotype-specific responses to Fe starvation in chickpea.

Iron deficiency is a major nutritional stress that severely impacts crop productivity worldwide. However, molecular intricacies and subsequent physiological and metabolic changes in response to Fe starvation, especially in leguminous crops like chickpea, remain elusive. In the present study, we investigated physiological, transcriptional, and metabolic reprogramming in two chickpea genotypes (H6013 and L4958) with contrasting seed iron concentrations upon Fe deficiency. Our findings revealed that iron starvation affected growth and physiological parameters of both chickpea genotypes. Comparati

Genetic enhancement of Trichoderma asperellum biocontrol potentials and carbendazim tolerance for chickpea dry root rot disease management.

Advances in biocontrol potentials and fungicide resistance are highly desirable for Trichoderma. Thus, it is profitable to use mutagenic agents to develop superior strains with enhanced biocontrol properties and fungicide tolerance in Trichoderma. This study investigates the N-methyl-n-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (NTG) (100 mg/L) induced mutants of Trichoderma asperellum. Six NTG (3 each from 1st & 2nd round) induced mutants were developed and evaluated their biocontrol activities and carbendazim tolerance. Among the mutant N2-3, N2-1, N1 and N2-2 gave the best antagonistic and volatile metabolit

Control of compound leaf patterning by MULTI-PINNATE LEAF1 (MPL1) in chickpea.

Plant lateral organs are often elaborated through repetitive formation of developmental units, which progress robustly in predetermined patterns along their axes. Leaflets in compound leaves provide an example of such units that are generated sequentially along the longitudinal axis, in species-specific patterns. In this context, we explored the molecular mechanisms underlying an acropetal mode of leaflet initiation in chickpea pinnate compound leaf patterning. By analyzing naturally occurring mutants multi-pinnate leaf1 (mpl1) that develop higher-ordered pinnate leaves with more than forty le

Comprehensive evaluation of agronomic traits, physiological responses, and gene expression in chickpea cultivars under fungal stress.

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), a widely grown legume with significant economic importance, serves as an important nutrient source for humans. However, its production is severely constrained by Fusarium wilt, caused by the pathogen Fusarium oxysporum. Due to the high pathogenic variability, effective control remains challenging, and the plant's defense responses are not yet fully understood. In this study, we provide novel insights by identifying cultivar-specific responses and uncovering novel gene expression profiles associated with Fusarium resistance, which advance current understanding bey

Chickpea Sprouts as a Potential Dietary Support in Different Prostate Disorders-A Preliminary In Vitro Study.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PC) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) are common health problems in the aging male population. Due to the unexplored and unconfirmed impact of food containing isoflavones, like sprouts, on the development of the management of BPH and prostate cancer, we decided to extend the knowledge in this area. RESULTS: We have demonstrated for the first time that chickpea sprouts may play an important role in the chemoprevention of prostate disorders. However, attention should be paid to the isoflavone content in the sprouts, as in our study, chickpea sprouts with a mode

Identification of Purple Acid Phosphatases in Chickpea and Potential Roles of CaPAP7 in Seed Phytate Accumulation.

Purple acid phosphatases (PAPs) play important roles in phosphate (Pi) acquisition and utilization. These PAPs hydrolyze organic Phosphorus (P) containing compounds in rhizosphere as well as inside the plant cell. However, roles of PAPs in one of the most widely cultivated legumes, chickpea (Cicer arietnum L.), have not been unraveled so far. In the present study, we identified 25 putative PAPs in chickpea (CaPAPs) which possess functional PAP motifs and domains. Differential regulation of CaPAPs under different nutrient deficiencies revealed their roles under multiple nutrient stresses includ
