The South American cichlid fish Cichlasoma dimerus is a freshwater species that presents social hierarchies, a highly organized breeding activity, biparental care and a high frequency of spawning. Spawning is followed by a period of parental care (about 20 days in aquaria conditions) during which the cooperative pair takes care of the eggs, both by fanning them and by removing dead ones. The different spawning events in the reproductive period were classified as female reproductive stages which can be subdivided in four phases, according to their offspring degree of development: (1) female wit

Measuring hormone levels multiple times on the same individual across different life stages or treatments can facilitate our understanding of hormonal regulation of physiological and behavioral events. The conventional method of hormone measurement requires blood sampling, which is potentially lethal to small individuals. In fishes, there is an alternative non-invasive method of hormone measurement using the release of hormones across gill membranes from blood into holding water. Validation of this method is required to evaluate its application value to different species. In the present study

The nonapeptides arginine-vasotocin (AVT) and isotocin (IT), which are the teleost homologues of arginine-vasopressin and oxytocin in mammals, have well established peripheral effects on osmoregulation and stress response, and central effects on social behavior. However, all studies that have looked so far into the relationship between these nonapeptides and social behavior have used indirect measures of AVT/IT activity (i.e. immunohistochemistry of AVT/IT immunoreactive neurons, or AVT/IT or their receptors mRNA expression with in situ hybridization or qPCR) and therefore direct measures of p

Phenotypic plasticity, in which traits change in response to environmental conditions, is closely related to predator-prey interactions and speciation. The scale-eating cichlid fish Perissodus microlepis exhibits marked left-right differences in predatory behavior and mouth morphology. While phenotypic plasticity is hypothesized to contribute to the formation of laterality, direct evidence remains scarce. We examined how plasticity shapes laterality by analyzing the predatory behavior and mandibular changes under different foraging conditions: picking granulated feed (non-scale-eating) and tea

Phenotypic plasticity allows organisms to adapt to changing environments within their lifetimes. However, environmentally induced changes in the plastic trait of interest may influence a range of fitness-related traits due to trade-offs, pleiotropy, linkage, or epistasis of genes regulating the plastic trait. These correlated responses may constrain or facilitate the evolution of plasticity, but their evolutionary implications are often poorly understood due to a lack of data on their direction and magnitude. Males in the African cichlid Astatotilapia burtoni are blue or yellow, and males are

This work aimed to investigate the response of cholecystokinin (CCK) to starvation and its impact on food intake and the reproductive axis of the tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus. The fish subjected to 21 days of starvation showed a significant decrease in CCK immunoreactivity in the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and intestine. The administration of injections of 0.5 and 5 μg of sulfated CCK-8 (CCK-8S) over 21 days resulted in a significant, dose-dependent decrease in food consumption. Administration of a high dose of CCK-8S (5 μg) caused a substantial decrease in the number of various spermat

We identified vagal innervation in the pharyngeal tooth and jawbones of Nile tilapia through macroscopic observations and immunohistochemistry. We also revealed the apposition of the nerve and osteoclasts in the pharyngeal jaw, suggesting the possibility of neuronal regulation for bone remodeling. However, the central projection from the vagal nerve, which innervates the pharyngeal jaws, remains unknown. To determine the projection of the vagus nerve in the brain, we applied carbocyanine dye (DiI) into the vagus nerve, revealing DiI-labeled neurons in the caudal vagal ganglion. The labeled fib

This research describes the pineal complex histology in juvenile and adult Cichlasoma dimerus, and the effect of different photoperiods on its cell morphology. In both juveniles and adults, the pineal complex of C. dimerus has three components: the pineal organ, consisting of a pineal vesicle (PV) and a pineal stalk, the parapineal organ and the dorsal sac. Although a strong morphological resemblance exists between the two stages, different synthesis patterns of cone and rod opsins were detected in the two life stages. An effect of the photoperiod length was observed on putative pinealocytes'

Sex-determination mechanisms and their master regulators are diverse among vertebrates. Components of downstream regulatory pathways can sometimes be co-opted as new upstream triggers. Here, we report a notable finding of cross-pathway recruitment: A gene from the female differentiation cascade was repurposed as a male master sex-determining (MSD) gene. We identify figlaY, a Y-linked truncated duplicate of the female-associated figla, as the MSD gene in Mozambique tilapia. figlaY originated through duplication and translocation in an ancestral cichlid lineage and subsequently introgressed into

In addition to an oral jaw, cichlids have a pharyngeal jaw, which is used for crushing and processing captured prey. The teeth and morphology of the pharyngeal jaw bones adapt to changes in prey in response to changes in the growing environment. This study aimed to explore the possible involvement of the peripheral nervous system in remodeling the cichlid pharyngeal jaw by examining the innervation of the inferior pharyngeal jaw in the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Vagal innervation was identified in the Nile tilapia inferior pharyngeal jaw. Double staining with tartrate-resistant acid

Neurokinin B, encoded by the tachykinin3 gene, plays a crucial role in regulating reproduction in mammals via KNDy neurons and interaction with GnRH. Previous work in teleost fishes has focused on hypothalamic tac3 expression for its role in reproduction, but detailed studies on extra-hypothalamic tac3 expression are limited. Here, we identified two tac3 genes in the social African cichlid fish Astatotilapia burtoni, only one of which produces a functional protein containing the signature tachykinin motif. In situ hybridization for tac3a mRNA identified cell populations throughout the brain. N

In the present study, we examined whether stress-induced suppression of reproduction is mediated through the catecholaminergic neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) in the female cichlid fish Oreochromis mossambicus. In the first experiment, application of antibody against tyrosine hydroxylase (TH; a marker for DA) in brain sections revealed the presence of intensely stained TH immunoreactive cells in the preoptic area (POA) and nucleus preopticus (NPO) during the previtellogenic phase. These cells showed weak immunoreactivity during the vitellogenic and prespawning phases concomitant with darkly sta

Retroculus acherontos is described from the Rio Tocantins basin, Brazil. It is distinguished from all congeners by the presence of a nuchal hump in large specimens, an irregular black blotch located on the middle of the anterior soft dorsal-fin rays, fewer pectoral-fin rays (15-16), a deeper body, a convex ventral profile, a more transversely convex ventral surface of the body, and by chest scales similar in size to the scales on the side. An expanded diagnosis for the genus Retroculus is provided.

A new species of Crassicutis Manter, 1936 (Digenea: Megaperidae) is described from the intestine of Satanoperca jurupari (Cichlidae) in the Amazon River basin, Brazil. The genus Crassicutis currently contains eight species. Crassicutis manteri n. sp. is morphologically very similar to Crassicutis cichlasomae Manter, 1936, a parasite of cichlids reported from Mexico, the Antilles, and Central and South America. Molecular data revealed that C. cichlasomae represents a species complex in Middle American cichlids. The new species can be readily distinguished from C. cichlasomae sensu lato, and the

Human and non-human animals often coordinate their behavior, a phenomenon thought to strengthen relationships by enabling sequential assessment of an interaction partner's quality as a mate or rival, a process that directly affects evolutionary fitness. There is increasing evidence that behavioral coordination is reflected by synchronized neural activity of the on interacting partners, though few studies have examined synchronization at the level of gene expression. Here, we use Burton's Mouthbrooder cichlid, Astatotilapia burtoni , to examine how neural transcriptomes are synchronized while m

Freshwater species are under threat from anthropogenic disturbance from in-stream barriers. Trophic interactions are a major driver of community structure and understanding how species partition resources in relation to barriers can help determine ecological impacts. In this study, we analyzed the diet based on stomach contents of three cichlid species from distinct genera and with divergent morphologies that occur in syntopy (Apistogramma piauiensis, Cichlasoma cf. zarskei, and Saxatilia brasiliensis) from the Mata de Itamacaoca, middle Munim River basin, Maranhão, northeastern Brazil, examin

A new dwarf cichlid, Congochromis rotundiceps sp. nov., (Cichliformes: Cichlidae) is described from the central Congo basin. It is a species of Congochromis based on the following characters: (1) four pores in the dentary laterosensory canal; (2) absence of a laterosensory canal in the angulo-articular, (3) six pores in the preopercle laterosensory canal; (4) a single tubular infraorbital bone behind the lachrymal; (5) 12 circumpeduncular scales; (6) jaw teeth comparatively robust, unicuspids, not closely spaced; and (7) presence of a small, supraneural bone. Congochromis rotundiceps sp. nov.

Melanin concentrating hormone (MCH) is a highly conserved cyclic peptide present in vertebrates. In this study, we describe the organization of MCH-immunoreactive (MCH-ir) cells and fibres in different regions of the brain in the cichlid fish Oreochromis mossambicus. Only MCH-ir fibres were observed in dorsal and ventral subdivisions of the telencephalon, the preoptic area and magnocellular and parvocellular divisions of the nucleus preopticus, and in hypothalamic areas such as the suprachiasmatic nucleus and tuberal area. Distinctly labelled MCH-ir perikarya were observed in the paraventricul

Trait loss represents an intriguing evolutionary problem, particularly when it occurs across independent lineages. Fishes in light-poor environments often evolve "troglomorphic" traits, including reduction or loss of both pigment and eyes. Here, we investigate the genomic basis of trait loss in a blind and depigmented African cichlid, Lamprologus lethops, and explore evolutionary forces (selection and drift) that may have contributed to these losses. This species, the only known blind cichlid, is endemic to the lower Congo River. Available evidence suggests that it inhabits deep, low-light hab

This study represents the first exploration of the parasite fauna of cichlid fishes in the Mweru-Luapula subregion (Central Africa). Twelve species of cichlids and 14 species of Monogenea from three genera (Cichlidogyrus, Gyrodactylus and Scutogyrus) were collected. We present a first record of the gill parasite fauna of eight host species, Oreochromis mweruensis, Orthochromis sp. 'Mambilima', Sargochromis mellandi, Serranochromis angusticeps, S. stappersi, S. thumbergi and Tylochromis mylodon. The host range of ten parasite species was expanded. The study further includes the description of C
