Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a psychiatric disorder mainly characterized by extreme hypophagia, severe body weight loss, hyperactivity, and hypothermia. Currently, AN has the highest mortality rate among psychiatric illnesses. Despite decades of research, there is no effective cure for AN nor is there a clear understanding of its etiology. Since a complex interaction between genetic, environmental, social, and cultural factors underlines this disorder, the development of a suitable animal model has been difficult so far. Here, we present our protocol that couples a loss-of-function mouse model to

PURPOSE: This narrative review synthesizes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evidence from exercise intervention studies in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), focusing on structural and functional brain changes associated with motor and cognitive outcomes. We also propose an interpretative framework in which exercise-related neuroplasticity in PD is understood as region- and task-dependent reorganization across cognitive-motor networks.
METHODS: PubMed and Web of Science were searched for interventional studies in patients with PD that examined the effects of exercise-based training on mo

BACKGROUND: In the United Kingdom (UK), exercise intensity is prescribed from a fixed percentage range (% heart rate reserve (%HRR)) in cardiac rehabilitation programmes. We aimed to determine the accuracy of this approach by comparing it with an objective, threshold-based approach incorporating the accurate determination of ventilatory anaerobic threshold (VAT). We also aimed to investigate the role of baseline cardiorespiratory fitness status and exercise testing mode dependency (cycle vs. treadmill ergometer) on these relationships.
DESIGN AND METHODS: A maximal cardiopulmonary exercise te

BACKGROUND: The delivery of Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) and attaining evidence-based treatment goals are challenging in developing countries, such as Malawi. The aims of this study were to (i) assess the effects of exercise training/ CR programme on cardiorespiratory and functional capacity of patients with chronic heart failure (CHF), and (ii) examine the effectiveness of a novel, hybrid CR delivery using integrated supervised hospital- and home-based caregiver approaches.
METHODS: A pre-registered (UMIN000045380), randomised controlled trial of CR exercise therapy in patients with CHF was c

To investigate the effects of sustained positive-pressure breathing (PPB) on the adaptation of respiratory and circulatory functions to exercise, 8 healthy volunteers were exposed to PPB of air at 15 and 30 cm H2O in the supine position at rest and while performing leg exercise at 50% of individual maximal working capacity. PPB was both subjectively and objectively better tolerated when combined with exercise than it was at rest. PPB at 30 cm H2O resulted in marked hyperventilation with alkalosis in the resting condition, but did not significantly affect respiratory minute volume, blood gases

Adolescent depression emerges during a developmental period characterized by ongoing maturation of corticolimbic and stress-regulatory systems. This narrative review critically evaluates a hypothesis that acute exercise-related endocannabinoid mobilization, particularly changes in circulating anandamide (AEA), may be linked to CB1 receptor (CB1R)-dependent processes relevant to prefrontal-amygdala function and stress-sensitive symptom dimensions. The evidence base is fragmented across populations and experimental levels. Human exercise studies, conducted predominantly in healthy adults, indica

Lactate and β-hydroxybutyrate (βHB), once regarded mainly as metabolic byproducts or alternative fuels, are now increasingly recognized as redox-active metabolites that regulate energy partitioning, mitochondrial function, and adaptive stress responses. Here, we propose a unifying framework in which lactate and βHB form a redox-coupled inter-organ circuit linking the liver, kidney, heart, and skeletal muscle. Through coordinated LDH- and BDH1-dependent reactions and monocarboxylate transport, the lactate-βHB axis integrates carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, supports dynamic fuel switching, an

Evolutionarily conserved neural circuits evolved that mediate switching between feeding and foraging for food, depending on environmental conditions such as food scarcity and internal state [1-3]. Activity-based anorexia is a phenomenon observed ubiquitously in normal mammals that emerges under conditions of time-restricted food availability and continuous access to running wheels. Under these experimental conditions, rodents progressively lose body weight and develop paradoxical hypophagia and compulsive wheel running, which can prove fatal if left unchecked. On the other hand, rodents surviv

The aim of our meta-analysis was to compile the available evidence to evaluate the effect of physical exercise-based therapy (PEBT) on pain, impact of the disease, quality of life (QoL) and anxiety in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), to determine the effect of different modes of physical exercise-based therapy, and the most effective dose of physical exercise-based therapy for improving each outcome. A systematic review and meta-analysis was carried out. The PubMed (MEDLINE), SCOPUS, Web of Science, CINAHL Complete and Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) databases were searched u

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing heart surgery demonstrate impaired cardiorespiratory performance. Phase II cardiac rehabilitation (CR) in people undergoing open heart surgery (OHS) aims to reduce the adverse physical effects of cardiovascular diseases. Virtual reality (VR) exercise is now used in CR.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the effects of VR exercise on functional capacity, pulmonary function, and respiratory muscle strength in patients who underwent OHS and were in phase II CR.
METHODS: Forty-nine patients who underwent elective OHS and were in phase II CR were randomized int

3,4-methelenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) can be effective in treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in controlled trials, potentially secondary to MDMA's effects on neural circuits implicated in fear and reward. Although anxiety, stress, and fear-based disorders involve maladaptation of the neural circuits processing fear, threat, and reward, no studies have tested MDMA's therapeutic efficacy on specific phobias. This article proposes a naturalistic biopsychosocial model of MDMA assisted therapy (MDMA-AT) informed by the neurobiological mechanisms of MDMA and the theoretical models of E

Wearable sensors have shown great potential in sports motion monitoring, exercise evaluation, and intelligent training owing to their ability to provide continuous and real-time biomechanical information. Here, a multinetwork PD hydrogel-based triboelectric nanogenerator (PD-TENG) is developed as a self-powered wearable sensing platform for national fitness motion monitoring and intelligent evaluation. The device adopts a contact-separation configuration with pPTFE and nylon as the triboelectric pair and PD hydrogel as the flexible conductive electrode. Benefiting from the synergistic coupling

BACKGROUND: Given the neurodegenerative nature of Huntington's disease (HD), community-based exercise programs that meet the ongoing needs of those living with HD are needed. The genetic nature of HD warrants the inclusion of those at-risk for HD. The purpose of this clinical report is to describe an evidence-based approach to the design of a community-based exercise program to improve gait, balance, and fatigue for individuals diagnosed with and at-risk for HD.
PROGRAM DESIGN: Based on the literature, clinical expertise and patient values, the program was designed to include four key feature

Exercise is increasingly recognized not only as a behavioral and preventive health intervention but also as a biologically active stimulus that may influence stress-responsive neural systems across molecular, autonomic, neurochemical, neuroimmune, and network levels. Evidence from human intervention studies, neuroimaging research, peripheral biomarker analyses, and preclinical models suggests that repeated physical activity may modulate pathways involved in emotional regulation, motivational processing, stress responsivity, interoceptive signaling, and adaptive neuroplasticity. However, the st

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterised by the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta, resulting in motor symptoms such as tremor, rigidity and bradykinesia, along with cognitive impairments. While conventional research has largely focused on pathological degeneration, recent advances highlight the role of neuroplasticity-the brain's ability to reorganise and adapt neural circuits-as a potential mechanism for functional recovery and disease modification.
SUMMARY: This review examines therapeutic strateg

Addictive behaviours are associated with substantial neurobiological, psychological, and behavioural impairments. Exercise training has emerged as a potential complementary strategy in addiction treatment; however, the characteristics of exercise interventions and their associated outcomes remain insufficiently characterized. This scoping review (ScR) was conducted according to the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and reported in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Searches were conducted across three electronic databases for studies published between January 2015 and March 2025. Eli
