INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization's manual on male circumcision listed Plastibell technique as a well-proven paediatric method with respect to the results and complications. Although, literatures abound on its wide acceptability, there are few multi-centered reports from this environment. The objective was to evaluate the cases of infant circumcision by Plastibell device from two medical institutions.
METHODS: All consecutive infants who had Classical Plastibell Circumcision (PC) at the Federal Staff Medical Centre, Abuja and the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja betwe

This paper analyses the views of 20 Japanese mothers concerning paediatric male circumcision and penile hygiene. In Japan, routine male circumcision has never been implemented for newborns and children, and adult males are mostly circumcised at aesthetic clinics. However, media reports indicate a trend of Japanese mothers willing to have their sons circumcised. In discussing penile hygiene and male circumcision, the construct of a 'sexual script' becomes relevant to understanding how linguistic and gender barriers made references to male genitalia and penile hygiene largely appear as 'vulgar'

Given the magnitude of the HIV pandemic, development of new prevention means is necessary. Male circumcision reduces HIV transmission from female to male by 57 % [95 % Confident Interval (CI): 42-68 %]. Its generalization in sub-Saharan Africa could avert, among men and women, from 1 to 4 millions new HIV infections over the next ten years. Acceptability of this new prevention mean is high in countries which could benefit the most from male circumcision, that means located in southern Africa, a region where in majority men are uncircumcised and where HIV prevalence is high. Male circumcision i

Newborn male circumcision is a minor surgical procedure that has generated significant controversy. Accumulating evidence supports significant health benefits, most notably reductions in urinary tract infections, acquisition of HIV and a number of other sexually transmitted infections, penile cancer, phimosis, paraphimosis, balanitis and lichen sclerosis. While circumcision, like any surgical procedure, has risks for complications, they occur in less than 1 in 500 infants circumcised and most are minor and require minimal intervention. The CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) belie

OBJECTIVE: Routine male infant circumcision (RMIC) is a common procedure that inadvertently causes significant but preventable pain. In this best evidence review, we examine the available pain management options and their effectiveness for RMIC.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The Medline (OVID) and Cochrane library were searched for randomized controlled trials investigating pain control for RMIC. Only trials that included newborns younger than 45 days of age were included. The articles generated in the initial search were screened independently by two of the authors. A third reviewer settled any disc

Randomized controlled trials in sub-Saharan Africa have shown that adult male circumcision reduces the risk of HIV acquisition in men by about 60%. In this article, we review recent data on the association of male circumcision and HIV/sexually transmitted infection in men and women. This includes a summary of data showing some evidence of an effect of male circumcision against genital ulcer disease, HSV-2 infection, human papillomavirus and Trichomonas vaginalis, but not Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoea in men. Longitudinal studies among HIV discordant couples suggest that male ci

The effects of childhood circumcision on male sexual function have been debated. However, there are no studies, to our knowledge, that assess the possible effects of childhood circumcision age on male sexual function. In an attempt to answer this question, we performed a prospective study to determine the possible relationship between circumcision age and male sexual function, using a validated questionnaire, the Golombok-Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction. We found no relationship between childhood circumcision age and overall sexual function; however some specific domains of sexual functi

BACKGROUND: Male circumcision is protective against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and select other STIs. The protective role of male circumcision in genital herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection and disease, however, remains controversial.
METHODS: We evaluated data from a sample of heterosexual black men attending a sexually transmitted diseases clinic to determine if circumcision status influenced HSV-1 and HSV-2 seroprevalence, clinical genital disease, or asymptomatic shedding. Consenting participants answered questionnaires detailing sexual history, then underwent a focused physical

Male circumcision is increasing in popularity due to its medical benefits, including reducing HIV prevalence. It is commonly performed by both health and non-health professionals, with most circumcisions occurring during the neonatal period. Studies suggest the benefits outweigh the risks, though complications can occur. This study aimed to determine the clinical outcomes of circumcisions and the prevalence of adverse events of circumcision in the Volta region of Ghana. A five-year retrospective descriptive and analytic study was conducted at Ho Teaching Hospital, using a structured data extra

Greater than 20 surgical circumcision devices are available worldwide for male circumcision. These have been developed so as to decrease complications. The hemostasis system classifies these devices as crush, clamp or ligature. This study assessed the safety, acceptability, and feasibility of male neonatal circumcision using the Alisklamp device (AKD). The AKD is one of the latest medical devices designed for assisted circumcision. It takes less time to install, has a better complication rate, and has a better cosmetic appearance than conventional surgical circumcision. The study was divided i

BACKGROUND: Although circumcision in male neonates is one of the most common procedures performed in neonatal surgery, mothers' preferences concerning the aspects of circumcision are not well-known. Since mother is the likely parent to present child for circumcision, her preferences should be given adequate consideration.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to evaluate maternal preferences for neonatal male circumcision in Enugu.
METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study where questionnaire was distributed by the researchers to consenting pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in two t

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we describe and depict unexpected sequelae of adult medical male circumcision (MMC) using the PrePex device.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The PrePex system is an elastic compression device for adult MMC. The device is well studied, has been pre-qualified by the World Health Organization (WHO), and its use is being scaled-up in African countries targeted by WHO. We conducted a PrePex implementation study in routine service delivery among 427 men in the age range of 18-49 in western Kenya. We captured penile photographs to create a record of adverse events (AEs) and to mo

UNLABELLED: WHAT'S KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT? AND WHAT DOES THE STUDY ADD?: The sensitivity of the foreskin and its importance in erogenous sensitivity is widely debated and controversial. This is part of the actual public debate on circumcision for non-medical reason. Today some studies on the effect of circumcision on sexual function are available. However they vary widely in outcome. The present study shows in a large cohort of men, based on self-assessment, that the foreskin has erogenous sensitivity. It is shown that the foreskin is more sensitive than the uncircumcised glans mucosa, which mea

BACKGROUND: There is strong evidence showing that male circumcision (MC) reduces HIV infection and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In Rwanda, where adult HIV prevalence is 3%, MC is not a traditional practice. The Rwanda National AIDS Commission modelled cost and effects of MC at different ages to inform policy and programmatic decisions in relation to introducing MC. This study was necessary because the MC debate in Southern Africa has focused primarily on MC for adults. Further, this is the first time, to our knowledge, that a cost-effectiveness study on MC has been carried out

OBJECTIVES: To report on the likely existing evidence about the practice of circumcision in prehistory, or at least a culture of foreskin retraction, and also the meaning of erection in Paleolithic minds. The origin of the ritual of circumcision has been lost in time. Similarly, the primitive anthropologic meaning of erection is undefined.
METHODS: We studied the archeologic and artistic evidence regarding human representations performed during the Upper Paleolithic period, 38,000 to 11,000 years BCE, in Europe, with a focus on genital male representations in portable and rock art.
RESULTS:

A 22-year-old incarcerated Saudi man presented with a 2-day history of painful vesicles on the shaft of his circumcised penis that were unrelated to drug use, trauma, exposure to ill persons, or sexual intercourse. Initial laboratory tests were normal, and the patient was initially diagnosed with herpes simplex infection. Due to nonadherence to the initial antiviral treatment, the lesions progressed, leading to a revised diagnosis of chancroid. Subsequent testing ruled out sexually transmitted infections and revealed methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in the culture of the purulent ex

BACKGROUND: Epidemic HIV-2 (groups A and B) emerged in humans circa 1930-40. Its closest ancestors are SIVsmm infecting sooty mangabeys from southwestern Côte d'Ivoire. The earliest large-scale serological surveys of HIV-2 in West Africa (1985-91) show a patchy spread. Côte d'Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau had the highest prevalence rates by then, and phylogeographical analysis suggests they were the earliest epicenters. Wars and parenteral transmission have been hypothesized to have promoted HIV-2 spread. Male circumcision (MC) is known to correlate negatively with HIV-1 prevalence in Africa, but s

OBJECTIVE: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is common in sexually active women, and in a large proportion the underlying aetiology is unknown. We evaluated partner circumcision status as a potential risk and hypothesised that women with uncircumcised partners were at increased risk for BV.
METHODS: Retrospective audit of a partner study (272 heterosexual couples) conducted in Baltimore between 1990 and 1992. BV defined by clinical criteria and circumcision status of males was determined by physical examination.
RESULTS: BV was diagnosed in 83 (30%) female partners; 75 (27%) males were uncircumcised.

Public health initiatives in Zambia encourage the uptake of early infant male circumcision (EIMC) as an HIV prevention strategy. This study assessed EIMC parental decision-making during perinatal care in Lusaka, Zambia, focusing on the influence of sociodemographic factors, family, and friends. A longitudinal pilot perinatal intervention, Like Father Like Son (LFLS), was implemented among 300 couples attending antenatal clinics in four urban community health centers. Participants were assessed postpartum regarding subsequent EIMC decisions. Partners, religion, and marital status were associate
