Influence of citric acid on SnO2 nanoparticles synthesized by wet chemical processes.

Tin oxide (SnO2) nanoparticles with size range of 19 to 100 nm were successfully synthesized using wet chemical process (i.e., chemical precipitation and sol-gel processes). The samples were analysed by X-Ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy, Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy, BET surface area and Thermogravimetric analyses. The results showed that variation of citric acid concentration directly influences the particle size and the BET specific surface area. The XRD analysis revealed that nanoparticles were phase pure and that all materials exhibited a

Mechanisms of capsaicin- and citric-acid-induced cough reflexes in guinea pigs.

Previously, we developed a novel coughing model that evoked coughs via citric acid microinjection into the larynx of unanesthetized, unrestrained guinea pigs. Here, we compared the effects of capsaicin and citric acid administration into the larynx using this model. Inhalation of capsaicin (30 microM) or citric acid (0.4 M) for 5 min induced cough mimetic responses over a 10-min observation period (mean +/- S.E.M.: 8.85 +/- 1.60 and 10.40 +/- 1.17 coughs, respectively, n = 18). Microinjection of 0.4 M citric acid into the larynx (20 microl in total in 10 aliquots of 2 microl at 30-s intervals)

Mast cells and reactive oxygen species in citric acid-induced airway constriction.

The noncholinergic airway constriction is mediated by tachykinins, mainly neurokinin A and substance P, and this bronchoconstriction is usually enhanced during inflammatory episodes. We demonstrated previously that reactive oxygen species play an important role in capsaicin-, hyperventilation-, and citric acid (CA) inhalation-induced noncholinergic airway constriction. For understanding cellular involvement, we further investigated the relationship between mast cells, bradykinin (BK), reactive oxygen species, and noncholinergic airway constriction. Sixty-five guinea pigs were divided into seve

Citric acid treatment of periodontitis-affected cementum. A scanning electron microscopic study.

Previous studies have described an inconsistent histological occurrence of a zone of surface demineralization on periodontitis-affected cementum following treatment with citric acid, and a lack of connective tissue attachment to the latter surfaces. In view of these findings, the purpose of the present study was to use scanning electron microscopy to examine the surface morphology of cementum from normal and periodontitis-affected root surfaces following citric acid treatment for differences in the effects of the demineralizing solution on these surfaces. Cementum surfaces were derived from th

Selective photo-reduction of NO2- to N2 in the presence of Fe2+ and citric acid.

The photo-reduction of NO2- has received increasing attention due to its high photo-activity. However, the intermediate products of NO2- photo-reduction might contain NOx, which are also toxic pollutants. Herein, a novel strategy to selectively photo-reduce NO2- to N2 was proposed using Fe2+ and citric acid (H3Cit) as assistant to eliminate the formation of NOx. In this strategy, NO2- was firstly reduced to NO by the combination of photon, Fe2+ and H3Cit; the generated NO was then immediately captured by Fe2+-H3Cit to form Fe2+-H3Cit-NO complex; finally, H3Cit was activated by Fe3+ and •OH in

Effect of Citric Acid on Prolonging the Half-life of Dissolved Ozone in Water.

To elucidate the effect of citric acid on the stability of dissolved ozone, half-lives of ozone in a citric acid solution was investigated. Prolongation of the half-life of ozone was clearly shown in the presence of citric acid in ozonized water. In the presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), the half-life of ozone was decreased. The addition of various concentrations of citric acid to the EDTA solution, however, reversed the half-life in a concentration-dependent manner. These indicate that citric acid suppresses ozone self-decomposition in water. A citric acid-mediated suppressio

Study on the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils by citric acid and polyepoxysuccinic acid complex leaching.

Soil leaching remediation has attracted extensive attention because of its good removal effect, short operation period and stable removal effect of heavy metals. The key to reduce the harm of heavy metal contaminated soil to the environment and human health is to use appropriate leachate to repair heavy metal contaminated soil. In this study, citric acid (CA), iron nitrate (Fe(NO3)3) and polyepoxysuccinic acid (PESA) with different concentrations were used as research reagents to explore the best combination of leaching effects of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd) in contaminated soil. The effects

Establishment of a Mouse Model with Cough Hypersensitivity via Inhalation of Citric Acid.

Cough is one of the most common symptoms of many respiratory diseases. Chronic cough significantly impacts quality of life and imposes a considerable economic burden. Increased cough sensitivity is a pathophysiological hallmark of chronic cough. It has been observed that cough hypersensitivity is related to airway inflammation, remodeling of airway sensory nerves, and alterations in the central nervous system. However, the precise molecular mechanisms remain unclear and require further elucidation using suitable animal models. Previous studies have utilized guinea pigs as models for studying c

The role of mast cells in citric acid-induced airway constriction and cough.

Inhalation of citric acid (CA) causes airway constriction and coughing. To investigate the role of mast cells in CA-induced airway constriction and cough, three experiments using guinea pigs were carried out. In the first experiment, we used compound 48/80 to deplete mast cells, cromolyn sodium to stabilize mast cells, MK-886 to inhibit synthesis of leukotrienes, pyrilamine to antagonize histamine H1 receptor, methysergide to antagonize serotonin receptor, and indomethacin to inhibit cyclooxygenase. In the second experiment, compound 48/80-pretreated animals were divided into 2 parts; the firs

Citric acid as a decalcifying agent for the excised calcified human heart valves.

OBJECTIVE: Cardiac valvular pathologies are frequently encountered as mechanical and functional disorders due to the calcification of the valves whatever the etiologies are. This pathophysiologic table usually ends up with valvular replacement. In this study, we aimed to decrease/eliminate the calcium in the excised calcified human heart valves by using citric acid in vitro hence bringing about the question for possible oral treatment of calcification of the valves by citric acid ingestion. METHODS: Fourteen pieces of mitral and/or aortic valves excised from 12 patients undergoing valve repla

Partitioning the respiratory effects of airway citric acid and normal saline in lambs.

Aspiration is common in the intubated human neonate. Thus, the ventilatory and blood gas responses to citric acid and saline instillation into different airway sites were studied in ten awake, unanesthetised lambs, breathing spontaneously via a tracheostomy tube. With a system of balloons, 1 ml of saline or citric acid was placed selectively into the midtrachea, the laryngeal area, or the lower trachea (lower tr). Changes in minute ventilation (VE), after a 30 sec baseline period, were measured 30 sec and 1 and 2 min after the challenge. Arterial blood gas changes were measured at 30 sec and 2

Defects in citric acid cycle and the electron transport chain in progressive poliodystrophy.

We will present 8 children with progressive infantile or juvenile poliodystrophy (Alpers' disease), associated with a defect in pyruvate metabolism. Laboratory studies showed elevated levels of lactate in CSF and, in 4 children, elevated levels in serum. Histopathologic studies revealed lipid storage in liver and/or muscle tissue, sometimes myopathy with abnormal mitochondria and slight axonal degeneration in the peripheral nerve. Autopsy showed the characteristics of progressive poliodystrophy with degeneration and loss of neurons. Electron microscopy of cerebral cortex showed no mitochondria

Glass formation in barbiturates and solid dispersion systems of barbiturates with citric acid.

Glasses were prepared from a number of barbiturates. The viscosities and glass transition temperatures of the glasses were dependent on the structure of the groups present on the C-5 and N-1 atoms. Solid dispersions were prepared from three selected barbiturates formulated with citric acid. The glass transition temperatures of these systems indicated that a 1:1 molar ratio complex was formed between the two components and that intermolecular bonding was stronger in the complex than in the individual components.
