ATPIF1 Deficiency Significantly Alleviates Citrobacter rodentium-Induced Colitis in Mice.

Mitochondrial ATP synthase inhibitory factor 1 (ATPIF1) regulates cellular energy metabolism and has been implicated in inflammatory disorders. However, its role in infection-associated colitis remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of ATPIF1 on host susceptibility and inflammation in a Citrobacter rodentium-induced infectious colitis model. ATPIF1 knock out (KO) and wild type (WT) mice were orally gavaged with C. rodentium to induce infectious colitis. Body weight, disease activity index (DAI), and colon length, histopathology, barrier function, inflammatory markers, and

Engineering methionine γ-lyase from Citrobacter freundii for anticancer activity.

Methionine deprivation of cancer cells, which are deficient in methionine biosynthesis, has been envisioned as a therapeutic strategy to reduce cancer cell viability. Methionine γ-lyase (MGL), an enzyme that degrades methionine, has been exploited to selectively remove the amino acid from cancer cell environment. In order to increase MGL catalytic activity, we performed sequence and structure conservation analysis of MGLs from various microorganisms. Whereas most of the residues in the active site and at the dimer interface were found to be conserved, residues located in the C-terminal flexibl

Clinical features and antimicrobial susceptibility trends in Citrobacter freundii bacteremia.

This retrospective study investigated the clinical characteristics and antimicrobial susceptibilities of 36 cases of Citrobacter freundii bacteremia treated at the Taipei Veterans General Hospital from 1996 through 1999. The results showed that the predominant infection site was the intraabdominal region and the mortality was 22%. The resistance of C. freundii to most third-generation cephalosporins and broad-spectrum penicillins increased in both nosocomial and community-acquired C. freundii bacteremia during the study period, and the strategy of using a combination of antimicrobial agents to

Delayed Post-cholecystectomy Gallbladder Fossa Abscess Due to Citrobacter freundii.

While laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become the treatment of choice for cholecystitis, complications such as abscess development can result even years after the intervention. We present a case of a patient with a remote history of laparoscopic cholecystectomy now diagnosed with gallbladder fossa abscess infected with Citrobacter freundii, a low-virulence pathogen typically seen in iatrogenic urinary tract infections. Subsequent conjoint percutaneous drainage and long-term antibiotics resulted in both clinical and radiological improvement for the patient. Therefore, in the absence of recent e

Citrobacter braakii CLABSI in a hematopoietic stem cell transplant patient.

INTRODUCTION: Citrobacter bacteria are gram-negative anaerobic bacilli commonly found in water, soil, food, and the intestinal tracts of animals and humans. Patients at highest risk of these nosocomial infections include neonates and adults who are ≥65 years of age, debilitated, or immunocompromised. Citrobacter braakii (C. braakii), specifically, has been reported to cause sepsis in immunocompromised patients. Herein, we describe a case of an allogeneic stem cell transplant (SCT) adult patient with C. braakii bloodstream infection. CASE REPORT: We report our experience managing a central lin

Enteric fever-like illness caused by infection with citrobacter amalonaticus.

'Enteric fever' is a potentially fatal, severe systemic disease, which is encountered worldwide. Traditionally, enteric fever refers to a bacteremic illness caused by members of certain Salmonella serotypes, notably: Salmonella typhi, a Gram-negative bacterium, and to a lesser extent, Salmonella paratyphi A, B and C. In addition, other non-salmonella organisms may produce a syndrome clinically indistinguishable from "enteric fever". Bacteremia due to Citrobacter species: significance of primary intraabdominal infection.

From 1982 to 1994, 45 patients (1.22 episodes per 10,000 discharged patients) were treated for citrobacter bacteremia at National Taiwan University Hospital (Taipei). All patients had at least one underlying disease. Citrobacter bacteremia most commonly occurred in patients with malignancies (48.9%) or hepatobiliary stones (22.2%). Intraabdominal tumors comprised the majority (59.1%) of malignancies. Bacteremia commonly originated from sites such as the abdominal cavity (51.1%), urinary tract (20%), and lung (11.1%). Polymicrobial bacteremia was diagnosed in 15 patients (33.3%); for nine (60%)

Bacteremia due to Citrobacter braakii: A case report and literature review.

Among the Citrobacter genus, the most commonly isolated bacteria from human specimens are Citrobacter freundii and Citrobacter koseri, and previous cases of infection due to Citrobacter braakii have been rarely reported. We present a case of bacteremia due to C. braakii in a 38-year-old woman with cervical cancer. She was admitted to our hospital with complaints of a fever, chills, and nausea. Blood culture results showed gram-negative bacilli identified as C. braakii via matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry analysis, although biochemical testing finding

Glycerol assimilation and production of 1,3-propanediol by Citrobacter amalonaticus Y19.

Citrobacter amalonaticus Y19 (Y19) was isolated because of its ability for carbon monoxide-dependent hydrogen production (water-gas shift reaction). This paper reports the assimilation of glycerol and the production of 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) by Y19. Genome sequencing revealed that Y19 contained the genes for the utilization of glycerol and 1,2-propanediol (pdu operon) along with those for the synthesis of coenzyme B12 (cob operon). On the other hand, it did not possess the genes for the fermentative metabolism of glycerol of Klebsiella pneumoniae, which consists of both the oxidative (dhaD

Development of fatal colitis in FVB mice infected with Citrobacter rodentium.

Citrobacter rodentium is the causative agent of transmissible murine colonic hyperplasia. The disease is characterized by severe but temporary epithelial hyperplasia with limited inflammation in the descending colon of adult mice on a variety of genetic backgrounds. The natural history of infection with this murine pathogen has been characterized in outbred Swiss Webster (SW) mice but not in the cognate inbred FVB strain. In contrast to subclinical infection in SW mice, 12-week-old FVB mice developed overt disease with significant weight loss and mortality beginning by 9 days postinoculation (

[Erythrocyte diagnostic agents for detecting bacterial antigens of the genus Citrobacter].

Citrobacter antigenic and antibody erythrocyte diagnosticums, serogroups 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, and 22, have been developed. Tests with the use of these diagnosticums have proved to be highly sensitive and mainly group-specific. The antigen in the cellular form is best detected by means of the passive hemagglutination test and in the molecular form, by means of the neutralization test. The antibody-binding and agglutinating activities of strictly group-specific and cross-reacting O-antigenic determinants differ in their sensitivity to heating and to treatment with phenol. In the s

Plasmid specification of resistance to antibacterial compounds in environmental Citrobacter freundii.

Citrobacter freundii from an environmental source displayed resistance to a wide variety of antibacterials. Some of these resistances could be transferred by conjugation with frequencies as high as 10(-2). The complexity of plasmid involvement in the antibacterial resistance of this species was demonstrated by isolation of plasmid DNA from two isolates. In one strain, resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics was specified by a 55 x 10(6) molecular weight plasmid, whereas kanamycin and neomycin resistance was specified by a 7 x 10(6) molecular weight plasmid. Resistance to chloramphenicol and tetr

[The GC content of a group of H2S- enterobacterial related to the genus Citrobacter].

The deoxyribonculeic acid (DNA) of 106 strains of Enterobacteria was analysed for the guanine + cytosine (GC) content. These strains, whose origin and principal characters are described in the text, belong to the genera Citrobacter (C. freundii H2S-) and Levinea (L. malonatica and L. amalonatica). Four other groups or classes named C.D.E. and F. could not be classified on the base of the usual phenotypic criteria. DNA from the strains of Levinea has a GC% of 50.3 to 53.3, while DNA from the strains of C. freundii H2S- has a GC% of 48.6 to 51.7. The representative values from the new classes ar

Cystitis Caused by Citrobacter amalonaticus in an Older Outpatient in the Absence of Catheterization.

Citrobacter amalonaticus (C. amalonaticus) is a rarely isolated member of the Citrobacter genus and an uncommon cause of human infection. Although Citrobacter species are recognized uropathogens, the clinical significance of C. amalonaticus in urinary tract infections (UTIs) remains poorly characterized. We report a case of cystitis caused by C. amalonaticus in an 87-year-old woman who visited our outpatient clinic owing to urinary symptoms. She had previously received medication for an overactive bladder and had persistent postvoid residual urine. Urine culturing yielded only C. amalonaticus,

The Unusual Suspect: Citrobacter Infection as a Rare Cause of Renal Abscess.

Citrobacter infections have emerged as now a common nosocomial pathogen. Most of the infections manifest in patients with underlying medical conditions. The features of infection can range from infections in the lower urinary tract, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal disease, or bacteremia, however renal abscesses remain uncommon. Here we present the case of a 48-year-old female with medical history of diabetes that presented with a right renal abscess secondary to Citrobacter koseri infection managed with drainage and antimicrobial treatment.

A brief insight into Citrobacter species - a growing threat to public health.

Citrobacter spp. are Gram-negative, non-spore forming, rod-shaped, facultative anaerobic bacteria from the Enterobacteriaceae family often found in soil, sewage, sludge, water, food, and the intestinal tracts of animals and humans. Several members of Citrobacter spp. especially C. freundii, C. koseri, C. braakii are frequently detected in newborn illnesses, urinary tract infections, and patients with severe underlying conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, cancer, and respiratory infections, or those who are immunocompromised. Strains of Citrobacter spp. can spread vertically or horizon
