Peculiar acute toxic colitis after ingestion of colocynth: a clinicopathological study of three cases.

We report three examples of toxic acute colitis which occurred after ingestion of colocynth (Citrullus colocynthis) for ritual purposes. The prominent clinical feature was dysenteric diarrhoea; colonoscopic changes included congestion and hyperaemia of the mucosa with abundant exudates but no ulceration or pseudopolyp formation. A causal relationship between colonic injury and the intake of colocynth was supported by the following features: (1) the pharmacology of the colocynth extract ingested; (2) the temporal relationship between colocynth intake and clinical onset (eight to 12 h); (3) the

Colocynth induced multiorgan toxicity: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Citrullus colocynthis, a plant traditionally used for its purgative properties, is known for its severe toxicity when consumed in excessive amounts. This case highlights the multiorgan toxicity of colocynth and underscores the need for increased public awareness to prevent such poisoning. The rapid onset of symptoms, absence of infectious causes, and prompt recovery with supportive care strongly support the diagnosis of colocynth-induced toxicity. It is the first reported case of colocynth poisoning from Eastern Africa. Given its widespread use in herbal medicine, this study raises

An experimental investigation of performance and emission of thumba biodiesel using butanol as an additive in an IDI CI engine and analysis of results using multi-objective fuzzy-based genetic algorithm.

The present work studies the effect of butanol in thumba (Citrullus colocynthis) biodiesel in an IDI CI engine at varying percentages of 5 and 10% in 15 and 10% thumba biodiesel respectively with 80% diesel in each blend. Another blend was introduced with 80% diesel and 20% biodiesel without any additive. The experiment was conducted in a single cylinder four-stroke IDI CI engine at 1500 rpm varying from 25% to full-load (100%) conditions. The results showed diesel with less bio diesel and higher butanol in percentage gives good performance and emission compared to diesel at higher loads. Blen

Integrative Treatment of Chronic Abdominal Bloating and Pain Associated With Overgrowth of Small Intestinal Bacteria: A Case Report.

Context • Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is commonly defined as an increased number of bacteria and/or an abnormal type of bacteria in the small intestine. Conventional treatment for SIBO is typically focused on antibiotics to eradicate the bacterial overgrowth. Numerous studies have demonstrated the antimicrobial activity of herbs, and a diet low in fermentable oligo-, di-, and monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs) has been shown to enhance antibiotic therapy. Objective • The current case study intended to evaluate the benefits of an alternative, multifaceted approach-including

Dietary Supplements in Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy: A New Hope?

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is one of the main and most prevalent side effects of chemotherapy, significantly affecting the quality of life of patients and the course of chemotherapeutic treatment. Nevertheless, despite its prevalence, the management of the CIPN is considered particularly challenging, with this condition often being perceived as very difficult or even impossible to prevent with currently available agents. Therefore, it is imperative to find better options for patients diagnosed with this condition. While the search for the new agents must continue, anothe

Cannabis, One Health, and Veterinary Medicine: Cannabinoids' Role in Public Health, Food Safety, and Translational Medicine.

Public health is connected to cannabis with regard to food, animal feed (feed), and pharmaceuticals. Therefore, the use of phytocannabinoids should be examined from a One Health perspective. Current knowledge on medical cannabis treatment (MCT) does not address sufficiently diseases which are of epidemiological and of zoonotic concern. The use of cannabinoids in veterinary medicine is illegal in most countries, mostly due to lack of evidence-based medicine. To answer the growing need of scientific evidence-based applicable medicine in both human and veterinary medicine, a new approach for the
