An ellagic acid isolated from Clerodendrum viscosum leaves ameliorates iron-overload induced hepatotoxicity in Swiss albino mice through inhibition of oxidative stress and the apoptotic pathway.

Iron is a vital element required for normal cellular physiology in animal systems, but excess iron accumulation in the biological system accelerates oxidative stress, cellular toxicity, tissue injury and organ fibrosis, which ultimately leads to the generation of chronic liver diseases including cancer. A natural antioxidant, ellagic acid (EA) has been previously reported for its pharmacological properties; however, there is no significant evidence available that could illustrate its protective potential against iron-overload induced hepatotoxicity. In the present work, EA was evaluated for it

Using analytical multidimensional isocratic HPLC methods of separation to isolate active constituents in natural products.

Multidimensional reversed-phase HPLC was employed to isolate the active constituents from a crude extract of Clerodendrum floribundum R. Br. These active constituents were known to have bioactivity against the enzyme xanthine oxidase and potentially could be employed in the treatment of gout. Using a multidimensional separation approach, rapid isolation of the active constituents was achieved from a complex sample matrix. As each separation dimension was isocratic, no equilibration time was required and consequently the technique shows promise in the scale up to preparative levels where high t

Some southern African plant species used to treat helminth infections in ethnoveterinary medicine have excellent antifungal activities.

BACKGROUND: Diseases caused by microorganisms and parasites remain a major challenge globally and particularly in sub-Saharan Africa to man and livestock. Resistance to available antimicrobials and the high cost or unavailability of antimicrobials complicates matters. Many rural people use plants to treat these infections. Because some anthelmintics e.g. benzimidazoles also have good antifungal activity we examined the antifungal activity of extracts of 13 plant species used in southern Africa to treat gastrointestinal helminth infections in livestock and in man. METHODS: Antifungal activity
