Non-Cholera Vibrios: The Microbial Barometer of Climate Change.

There is a growing interest in the role of climate change in driving the spread of waterborne infectious diseases, such as those caused by bacterial pathogens. One particular group of pathogenic bacteria - vibrios - are a globally important cause of diseases in humans and aquatic animals. These Gram-negative bacteria, including the species Vibrio vulnificus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio cholerae, grow in warm, low-salinity waters, and their abundance in the natural environment mirrors ambient environmental temperatures. In a rapidly warming marine environment, there are greater numbers o

Long-term elevated precipitation promotes an acid metabolic preference in soil microbial communities in a Tibetan alpine grassland.

Alpine ecosystems store vast amounts of soil organic carbon but are highly sensitive to climate change. Despite this, the response of in situ soil microbial metabolic processes, especially carbon substrate utilization, to climatic shifts remains underexplored. Here, we assessed microbial activity by metatranscriptomics in a Tibetan alpine grassland after a decade of experimental warming (+2°C) and altered precipitation (+50% and -50% of ambient precipitation). The experiment revealed that altered precipitation, rather than warming, shaped the active microbial community. Altered precipitation a

Québec Labour Confronts the Climate Crisis.

Most academic literature on unions and climate action is concerned with the analysis of union positions on climate as expressed by union representatives and in official documents. We as yet know little of the internal processes that lead unions to take these positions, and in particular the tensions or contradictions among labour actors that prevent unions from being more effective climate actors. This paper contributes to this body of work by exploring three areas of tension and contradiction that confront climate action within the Québec labour movement. These include tensions within unions

Cascading effects of climate change on the marine mercury cycle.

Under the global implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury, anthropogenic mercury (Hg) emissions are being progressively curtailed. However, marine methylmercury (MeHg) risks may not decline synchronously because climate change can trigger cascading changes in the biogeochemical processes linking Hg inputs to biological exposure. This review proposes a process-oriented framework for understanding how climate drivers, including warming, deoxygenation, acidification, cryosphere degradation, hydrological extremes, sea-level rise, and circulation changes, interact across key nodes of th

SoilTemp: A global database of near-surface temperature.

Current analyses and predictions of spatially explicit patterns and processes in ecology most often rely on climate data interpolated from standardized weather stations. This interpolated climate data represents long-term average thermal conditions at coarse spatial resolutions only. Hence, many climate-forcing factors that operate at fine spatiotemporal resolutions are overlooked. This is particularly important in relation to effects of observation height (e.g. vegetation, snow and soil characteristics) and in habitats varying in their exposure to radiation, moisture and wind (e.g. topography

Diversification of the Balloon bushcrickets (Orthoptera, Hexacentrinae, Aerotegmina) in the East African mountains.

East African mountains constitute a network of isolated habitat islands among dry savannah and are thus ideal for studying species diversification processes. This study elucidated the phylogenetic and phylogeographic relationships of all bushcricket species comprising the genus Aerotegmina. Our analysis indicated that large-scale climatic and topographic processes in Africa are likely to have driven speciation in this group, and revealed the cytogenetic traits of the species. Molecular phylogeny supported the monophyly of Aerotegmina and showed that the genus probably originated in the old Eas

Family climates: family factors specific to disturbed eating and bulimia nervosa.

More than a decade of research has characterized the families of individuals with bulimia and bulimia anorexia (Anorexia Nervosa, Binge/Purging Type) as less expressive, less cohesive, and experiencing more conflicts than normal control families. This two-part study investigated variables believed more directly related to disturbed eating and bulimia as contributing to a "family climate for eating disorders." In Study 1. a nonclinical sample of 324 women who had just left home for college and a sample of 121 mothers evaluated their families. Principal-components analyses revealed the same fact

Adapting irrigated agriculture to climate change in arid regions: A hydroeconomic optimization approach.

Climate change presents considerable challenges to agricultural production. The integration of autonomous and planned adaptation is a critical concern for developing effective climate adaptation strategies in arid irrigated agriculture, which is subject to multifaceted stresses of water scarcity, salinization and climate change. To identify effective climate adaptation strategies, we developed an integrated hydroeconomic optimization model that incorporates agro-hydrological processes and climate change impacts into an economic optimization framework for climate-adaptive allocations of agricul

Climate change and skin.

Global climate appears to be changing at an unprecedented rate. Climate change can be caused by several factors that include variations in solar radiation received by earth, oceanic processes (such as oceanic circulation), plate tectonics, and volcanic eruptions, as well as human-induced alterations of the natural world. Many human activities, such as the use of fossil fuel and the consequent accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, land consumption, deforestation, industrial processes, as well as some agriculture practices are contributing to global climate change. Indeed, many aut

Bright spots as climate-smart marine spatial planning tools for conservation and blue growth.

Marine spatial planning that addresses ocean climate-driven change ('climate-smart MSP') is a global aspiration to support economic growth, food security and ecosystem sustainability. Ocean climate change ('CC') modelling may become a key decision-support tool for MSP, but traditional modelling analysis and communication challenges prevent their broad uptake. We employed MSP-specific ocean climate modelling analyses to inform a real-life MSP process; addressing how nature conservation and fisheries could be adapted to CC. We found that the currently planned distribution of these activities may

[Climate and air pollution].

Climate and air pollution are closely related. On the one hand, the climate is more and more influenced, locally as well as globally, by the tremendous concentration of pollutants in our atmosphere. Certain elements of the climate are, on the other hand, directly responsible for the process of dilution and dispersion of pollution emission. Of particular importance is the phenomen of ventilation and inversion. The significance of knowing the regional climatic peculiarities is presented by ways of a smallspace-example of the ventilation existing at the valley of river Aare and of the frequency o

The impact of climate change and weather extremes on chestnut and olive crops in Portugal.

Climate change poses a significant risk to agroecosystems, particularly for perennial fruit trees such as chestnut and olive, by affecting phenological processes, physiological stress, and interactions with pests, diseases, and environmental factors. Although previous research has examined the effects of climate change on crop productivity and plant health, important gaps remain in understanding how long-term climate trends and extreme weather events influence yields across different phenological stages. This study evaluates the effects of climatic variability and extremes on the productivity

[Impacts of climate change on the functioning and productivity of agroecosystems: a focus on the impact of interactions between CO2, temperature and water deficit].

Rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations and temperatures, as well as changes in water regimes, are major determinants of the functioning and productivity of agroecosystems. Although the individual effects of each of these factors have been extensively studied, their combined action remains poorly understood, despite the fact that these factors interact closely to shape future climate conditions. This article provides a synthesis of current knowledge on the combined impacts of rising CO2, temperatures and water deficiency on crop plants, with a particular focus on wheat. Following a review of the

Equity, community, and accountability: Leveraging a department-level climate survey as a tool for action.

Organizational climate is a key determinant of diverse aspects of success in work settings, including in academia. Power dynamics in higher education can result in inequitable experiences of workplace climate, potentially harming the well-being and productivity of employees. Quantifying experiences of climate across employment categories can help identify changes necessary to create a more equitable workplace for all. We developed and administered a climate survey within our academic workplace-the Department of Zoology and Physiology at the University of Wyoming-to evaluate experiences of clim

Climate Change and Reproductive Health.

Climate change is a major threat to the world's population and is due to global warming from human activities that increase atmospheric greenhouse gas levels-burning fossil fuels, industry emissions, vehicular exhaust, and aerosol chlorofluorocarbons-that trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere and adversely impact air quality. Resulting higher global temperatures, extreme weather events, and rising sea levels lead to greater frequency of wildfires and floods, which, in turn, result in population displacements and threaten air and water quality, food and water security, economic and public health

Climate resilient adaptation of coastal amenities for wellbeing.

Blue spaces are recognised as vital public resources that support human health and wellbeing through pathways such as physical activity, psychological restoration and social connection. Coastal environments are especially distinctive for their multisensory stimuli, expansive vistas and cultural significance, with benefits shaped by environmental quality, accessibility and usability. Climate change threatens these benefits via extreme events, such as storm surges and flooding, and gradual processes, including rising sea levels, erosion and warming temperatures, which can also alter people's per

Sustainable Development Goals-Based Prospective Process Design Using Hybrid Modeling.

Replacing fossil technologies with renewable carbon-based technologies is of vital importance for the development of sustainable chemical processes in the future. However, impacts beyond climate change should be carefully evaluated to ensure that this transition to defossilized chemicals is truly sustainable. Here, we develop a framework for sustainable process design that explicitly accounts for the performance attained in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is computed using standard life cycle assessment (LCA) metrics alongside the planetary boundaries (PBs) concept. We apply th

Tracking Cholera in Coastal Regions using Satellite Observations.

Cholera remains a significant health threat across the globe. The pattern and magnitude of the seven global pandemics suggest that cholera outbreaks primarily originate in coastal regions and then spread inland through secondary means. Cholera bacteria show strong association with plankton abundance in coastal ecosystems. This review study investigates relationship(s) between cholera incidence and coastal processes and explores utility of using remote sensing data to track coastal plankton blooms, using chlorophyll as a surrogate variable for plankton abundance, and subsequent cholera outbreak
