AbstractTelomere dynamics have been linked to differences in reproductive effort across vertebrates. In the Cocos booby (Sula brewsteri), we predicted that parents' telomeres would shorten according to their breeding effort during incubation. During mid-incubation, we blood-sampled 24 adults to estimate telomere length by a quantitative polymerase chain reaction and recorded their body mass, clutch size, and hatching success. At the end of incubation, a second body mass measurement and blood sample were collected. Unexpectedly, parents' telomere length increased throughout incubation. Individu

Effective chemical control relies on reducing vector population size. However, insecticide selection pressure is often associated with the development of resistant populations that reduce control success. In treated areas, these resistant individuals present an adaptive advantage due to enhanced survival. Resistance can also lead to negative effects when the insecticide pressure ceases. In this study, the biological effects of deltamethrin resistance were assessed in the Chagas disease vector Triatoma infestans. The length of each developmental stage and complete life cycle, mating rate, and f

Multiple mating allows females to obtain material (more sperm and nutrient) and/or genetic benefits. The genetic benefit models require sperm from different males to fertilize eggs competitively or the offspring be fathered by multiple males. To maximize genetic benefits from multiple mating, females have evolved strategies to prefer novel versus previous mates in their subsequent matings. However, the reproductive behavior during mate encounter, mate choice and egg laying in relation to discrimination and preference between sexes has been largely neglected. In the present study, we used novel

The development of axenic (microbiota-free) and gnotobiotic (fully defined and controlled microbiota) mosquito models has opened an opportunity to resolve current questions regarding mosquito-microbiota interactions, including fitness effects, microbiota acquisition, and tissue tropism. In this work, we introduced each of two focal bacterial strains - Enterobacter sp. and Asaia sp. originally isolated from Aedes aegypti midguts and reproductive tracts, respectively - into axenic Ae. aegypti larvae or adults to evaluate the effects of bacterial source and inoculation route on mosquito fitness.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Multiple therapeutic modalities, including surgery and rigid and flexible endoscopy, have been adopted to manage Zenker's diverticulum (ZD). Relief from symptoms such as dysphagia and regurgitation is the main goal of therapy in symptomatic ZD. This study was the first large cohort that aimed to assess efficacy with time and safety of endoscopic diverticulotomy using the Clutch Cutter.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Cricopharyngeal myotomy was performed in 43 patients at Hospital Saint Joseph de Paris, a tertiary referral center. Symptoms were analyzed before and at 3, 6, an

Mercury is a toxic and pervasive environmental contaminant that can be transferred from mother to offspring during development. Consequences of maternally-transferred mercury have been observed in vertebrate taxa, including reduced clutch viability, reduced offspring size, and behavioral alterations. These sublethal effects have been assumed to decrease survivorship, though this is seldom assessed. Here, we examined how maternally-transferred mercury interacts with incubation temperature to influence reproductive success, offspring behavior, and subsequent survival in the American alligator (A

Lithium carbonate is used as a standard treatment for manic depression. While researchers have investigated the teratogenic effects of lithium carbonate on embryos of various animals in later stages of development, very limited work has been done on the probability of effects at early stages of development. In this study, the teratogenic effect of lithium carbonate was investigated at earlier preimplantation through implantation stages of development of Balb/C mouse embryos. A therapeutic dose (i.e., 300 mg/kg b.w.) was injected into mice intraperitoneally on days 3.5, 4.5, 5.5, and 6.5 of pre

The zebrafish mutant strains to mimic human diseases have been developed to study human diseases and to discover novel therapeutic drugs. The characteristics of zebrafish, small size, large clutch size, ex utero development, body transparency, and genetic tractability are very useful to research approaches like therapeutic drug screening. Here we introduce and discuss zebrafish models of human diseases and methods of drugs screening using them. Specifically, we show examples of therapeutic drug screens using zebrafish models of a muscular dystrophy to identify new candidates to improve phenoty

In most male birds that exhibit paternal care, elevation in testosterone above the breeding baseline reduces nestling provisioning, which can be detrimental to offspring survival. Mechanisms that may allow some males to avoid this detrimental effect of elevated testosterone include (1) decreased sensitivity to testosterone's effects on behavior and (2) uncoupling of testosterone secretion from territorial challenges (thus reducing the number of transient elevations in testosterone above the breeding baseline). Both of these "cost-avoidance" mechanisms have been documented, but whether selectio

Syngnathid fishes (pipefishes, seahorses and seadragons) are characterized by a unique mode of paternal care in which embryos develop on or in the male's body, often within a structure known as a brood pouch. Evidence suggests that this pouch plays a role in mediating postcopulatory sexual selection and that males have some control over the events occurring within the pouch during the pregnancy. These observations lead to the prediction that males should invest differently in broods depending on the availability of food. Here, we use the Gulf pipefish to test this prediction by monitoring grow

Treating Mexican grapefruit with gibberellic acid (GA3) before color break, significantly delayed peel color change and increased peel puncture resistance, but it did not reduce grapefruit susceptibility to Mexican fruit fly, Anastrepha ludens (Loew) attack under natural conditions. Despite GA3 treatments, larval infestation levels increased with higher fruit fly populations, which also increased as the season progressed. Late in the season, infestation levels were even higher in GA3-treated fruit compared with untreated fruit, possibly because treated fruit were in better condition at that st

Nanoplastics (NPs) have gained increasing attention due to their widespread presence in aquatic environments and potential adverse effects on organisms. The interaction between NPs and freshwater gastropods can lead to a range of physiological and reproductive disturbances. In this study, we investigated the adverse effects of NPs (two size: 20 nm and 100 nm; three concentrations: 0.5, 50 and 100 ppm) on energy metabolism and reproductive fitness in freshwater gastropods Lymnean stagnalis after 21 days exposure. Briefly, the condition index negatively correlated with increasing NPs concentrati

Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) reduce host population sizes, cause extinction, disassemble communities, and have indirect negative effects on human well-being. Fungal EIDs have reduced population abundances in amphibians and bats across many species over large areas. The recent emergence of snake fungal disease (SFD) may have caused declines in some snake populations in the Eastern United States (EUS), which is home to a phylogenetically and ecologically diverse assembly of 98 taxa. SFD has been documented in only 23 naturally occuring species, although this is likely an underestimate of

The use of fat to support the energy needs of reproduction (i.e. capital breeding) has been studied in a diversity of taxa. However, despite reproductive output (i.e. young or eggs) being approximately 70% water, little is known about the availability of internal resources to accommodate the hydric demands of reproduction. Recent research suggests that dehydration increases the catabolism of muscle as a means of maintaining water balance. Accordingly, we investigated the interactive effects of reproductive investment and water deprivation on catabolism and reproductive output in female Childre

American kestrels (Falco sparverius) were fed diets containing methylmercury chloride (MeHg) at 0, 0.6, 1.7, 2.8, 3.9, or 5.0 µg/g (dry wt) starting approximately eight weeks before the onset of egg laying. Dietary treatment was terminated after 12 to 14 weeks, and unhatched eggs were collected for Hg analysis. Blood samples were collected after four weeks of treatment and the termination of the study (i.e., 12-14 weeks of treatment). Clutch size decreased at dietary concentrations above 2.8 µg/g. The average total mercury concentration in clutches of eggs and in the second egg laid (i.e., egg

Repeatability and phenotypic correlations were estimated for saltwater crocodile reproductive traits. No pedigree information was available to estimate heritability or genetic correlations, because the majority of breeder animals on farms were wild-caught. Moreover, as the age of the female breeders could not be accounted for, egg-size measurements were used as proxies. The reproductive traits investigated were clutch size (total number of eggs laid), number of viable eggs, number of eggs that produced a live, healthy hatchling, hatchability, average snout-vent length of the hatchlings and tim

We studied the behavioral development of seven lesser adjutant stork (Leptoptilos javanicus) chicks from hatching to fledging over three breeding seasons at the Bronx Zoo. We developed an ethogram and compared the rate at which behaviors appeared in relation to brood size, sex, and the conditions in which the chicks were raised by their parents. Although sample sizes were small, there seem to be sex-related differences in the rate at which behaviors develop, with females developing more rapidly than males. Larger clutch size may be associated with slower growth rate because the single male dev

In this study we examine the population biology of Brueelia apiastri, a chewing louse living on the European bee-eater (Merops apiaster). We investigate the relationships between parasite intensity of infestation, sex ratio, reproductive output, parasite size and their environment i.e. the morphology, condition, age and sex of the host. Chewing lice were collected, their sex and age (developmental stage) identified and parasite body size determined as a measure of parasite condition (larger individuals consume larger meals and larger females may produce larger clutches). The data show that the

Life-history traits are central to the long-term persistence of phenotypes. In reptiles, the transition to viviparity-viewed as a key innovation-and habitat use-an essential component of the ecological context-have been identified as two major drivers of phenotypic evolution. Yet their relative contributions and operating scales remain unclear. We used Bayesian phylogenetic mixed models (univariate and multivariate) and phylogenetic comparative analyses to compare the effects of parity mode and habitat use on the evolution of life-history traits in Sceloporus. We assembled data for nine traits

In many animal species, females select a mate on the basis of the expression of secondary sexual traits. A prevalent theory suggests that male ornaments are reliable indicators of immunocompetence, because the cost of immune function prevents cheating. However, sexual signalling is a component of male reproductive effort, and an immune challenge may also alter his perceived future prospects and hence signalling effort. In this study, blue-footed booby males (Sula nebouxii) were inoculated with a diphtheria-tetanus vaccine during courtship to investigate the consequences of mounting an immune r
