Histomorphometry of limb skeletogenesis in prehatched precocial embryos (Japanese quail and Cochin chicken) and altricial embryos (racing pigeons and cockatiel birds).

BACKGROUND: Birds are the group of tetrapods that exhibit the greatest diversity in taxonomy and ecology. Limb development is a major focus of developmental and evolutionary biology research. AIM: This study characterized the variances in histomorphometry of skeletogenesis in precocial embryos, such as Japanese quail (Jq) and Cochin chickens (Cc), and altricial embryos, including Racing pigeons (Rp) and Cockatiel birds (Cb). METHODS: Six embryos were collected on days 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 of incubation. Three embryos were prepared and stained with Alcian Blue for chondrification and Ali

Physiological, biochemical and histopathological changes associated with heatstroke in the galah (Eolophus roseicapilla) and rock dove (Columba livia).

The pathophysiology of heat illnesses in birds has not been well characterized. In this study, we describe the changes in heart rate, respiratory rate, blood biochemistry and histopathological findings in galahs and rock doves after heat exposure under standardized conditions designed to induce heatstroke. Birds in the heat-exposed group were exposed to environmental heat stress and compared to control birds. Both groups of birds were under general anaesthesia throughout the experiment and serial blood collections were performed for biochemical analyses, while organs were collected at the end

Myxoid leiomyosarcoma of the oviduct and uterus in a Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus).

An 11-year-old female cinnamon cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) was presented with a coelomic distention. Dystocia was suspected, given its previous history of a calcium-deficient diet and multiple instances of nonobstructive dystocia. Exploratory coeliotomy revealed a large intraluminal mass extending through the magnum to the uterus (shell gland). Metastasis and multiorgan involvement were not seen. Histopathologically, malignant and invasive fascicles of spindle cells were associated with abundant myxoid matrix and hypocellular areas. Multinucleation, bizarre cells and atypical mitotic fig

Immunophenotype of the inflammatory response in the central and enteric nervous systems of cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) experimentally infected with parrot bornavirus 2.

Proventricular dilatation disease is a lethal disease of psittacine birds. In this study, we characterized the local cellular immune response in the brain, proventriculus, and small intestine of 27 cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) experimentally infected with parrot bornavirus 2 (PaBV-2). Perivascular cuffs in the brain were composed of CD3+ T-lymphocytes and Iba1+ macrophages/microglia in most cockatiels (n = 26). In the ganglia of the proventriculus, CD3+ T-lymphocytes (n = 17) and Iba1+ macrophages (n = 13) prevailed. The ganglia of the small intestine had a more homogeneous distribution

Experimental Infection of Embryonic Cells and Embryonated Eggs of Cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) with Two Parrot Bornavirus Isolates (PaBV-4 and PaBV-2).

Parrot bornavirus (PaBV) might be transmitted vertically. Cockatiel embryonic brain cells and embryonated eggs of cockatiels (ECE) were infected with PaBV-2 and PaBV-4. In embryonic brain cells, PaBV-2 and PaBV-4 showed no differences in viral spread despite the slower growth of PaBV-2 compared with PaBV-4 in CEC-32 cells. ECE were inoculated with PaBV-4 and 13-14 dpi, organs were sampled for RT-PCR, immunohistochemistry/histology, and virus isolation. In 28.1% of the embryos PaBV-4-RNA and in 81.3% PaBV-4-antigen was detected in the brain. Virus isolation failed. Division of organ samples and

Retrospective Review of Mycobacterial Conjunctivitis in Cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus).

The etiologic disease organism responsible for causing mycobacteriosis in avian species is an acid-fast gram-positive bacterium. This bacterium causes granulomatous disease in various internal organs, but in cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) it has been commonly identified within the conjunctival tissues. Twenty-six cases of mycobacterial conjunctivitis in cockatiels were diagnosed through histopathologic assessment of diseased tissue samples, Fite acid-fast staining, and polymerase chain reaction in this retrospective study. Clinicians who saw these cases were contacted, and information was

Mucormycosis peritonitis: more than 2 years of disease-free follow-up after posaconazole salvage therapy after failure of liposomal amphotericin B.

A 57-year-old woman with end-stage kidney disease secondary to autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease developed peritoneal dialysis-related Mucor peritonitis after her pet cockatoo bit through her transfer set. The infection persisted despite more than 8 weeks of treatment with liposomal amphotericin B. On a compassionate basis, she then received oral posaconazole, 800 mg/d, in divided doses for 6 months. She experienced complete remission and has remained disease free since then, for more than 2 years. We review the medical literature about mucormycosis peritonitis which, albeit rare, c

The genus Neopsittaconirmus (Psocodea: Ischnocera: Philopteridae) from parrots of Pakistan, and evaluation of its distribution on captive parrots (Psittaciformes) around the world.

The genus Neopsittaconirmus Conci, 1942 is a host-specific genus, found on both wild and captive parrots and love birds (order Psittaciformes). Two species of this genus: N. lybartota (Ansari, 1947) and N. chandabani (Ansari, 1947) have been previously reported from the Punjab province, Pakistan. We recorded N. lybartota from Psittacula eupatria nipalensis (n = 2), Psittacula krameri borealis (n = 13), and captive Psittacula krameri krameri (n = 4) with the mean intensity of 2.0 ± 1, 2.13 ± 0.35 and 2.25 ± 0.47, respectively; the prevalence of louse infestation was 62% in P. krameri borealis a

Removal of a Tracheal Myelolipoma in a Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) by Surgical Resection and Anastomosis.

A 17-year-old, female cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) was presented for a 1-week history of respiratory distress. The clinical signs were consistent with tracheal obstruction; therefore, an air sac cannula was placed to reduce respiratory compromise. Radiographic images of the patient revealed a round, intraluminal, soft tissue opacity in the trachea. The obstruction could be visualized via transtracheal illumination, but tracheoscopy was not feasible because of the size of the patient. Attempts to manually extirpate the obstruction were unsuccessful, and the trachea subsequently avulsed in

Comparison of conventional and computer-assisted semen analysis in cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) and evaluation of different insemination dosages for artificial insemination.

Many psittacine species are threatened in the wild and also rare in captivity. Therefore, successful conservation and breeding programs are important to save these species. Unfortunately, clutches in conservation programs are frequently infertile. Semen evaluation is beneficial to investigate the causes of infertility and is advisable before artificial insemination (AI). In this study, we analyzed the semen of cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) using two different methods and investigated different insemination dosages for AI. Cockatiels (n = 30) were divided into two groups (group A: nine mal

Long-term management of ovarian neoplasia in two cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus).

Cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) are commonly diagnosed with ovarian neoplasia. However, there is very little information regarding medical management of this disease condition and subsequent patient response. Long-term medical therapy of 2 cockatiels eventually diagnosed with ovarian neoplasia is described along with responses to the treatment regimens. Each bird had initial signs consistent with reproductive disease (chronic egg laying, ascites, and lethargy) and respiratory distress. The diagnosis of ovarian adenocarcinoma was confirmed on postmortem examination of both birds. The birds w

Various Endoscopic Approaches for Removal of Proventricular Foreign Bodies in Parrots-Three Case Reports.

Although the use of incision-free endoscopy for foreign body (FB) removal in dogs and cats has been extensively documented, its application in birds remains limited. Thus, we present the endoscopic removal of gastrointestinal (GI) FBs from psittacine birds, employing different patient positioning and anesthesia methods. Two blue-and-yellow macaws (Ara ararauna) and a Triton cockatoo (Cacatua galerita triton) were examined. X-ray imaging revealed FBs situated in the proventriculus in each case. The FBs, all identified as feeding tubes, were safely removed using grasping forceps during the endos

Tissue Distribution of Parrot Bornavirus 4 (PaBV-4) in Experimentally Infected Young and Adult Cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus).

Proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) caused by parrot bornavirus (PaBV) infection is an often-fatal disease known to infect Psittaciformes. The impact of age at the time of PaBV infection on organ lesions and tissue distribution of virus antigen and RNA remains largely unclear. For this purpose, tissue sections of 11 cockatiels intravenously infected with PaBV-4 as adults or juveniles, respectively, were examined via histology, immunohistochemistry applying a phosphoprotein (P) antibody directed against the bornaviral phosphoprotein and in situ hybridisation to detect viral RNA in tissues.

From nerves to brain to gastrointestinal tract: A time-based study of parrot bornavirus 2 (PaBV-2) pathogenesis in cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus).

Parrot bornaviruses (PaBVs) are the causative agents of proventricular dilatation disease, however key aspects of its pathogenesis, such as route of infection, viral spread and distribution, and target cells remain unclear. Our study aimed to track the viral spread and lesion development at 5, 10, 20, 25, 35, 40, 60, 80, 95 and 114 dpi using histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and RT-PCR. After intramuscular inoculation of parrot bornavirus 2 (PaBV-2) in the pectoral muscle of cockatiels, this virus was first detected in macrophages and lymphocytes in the inoculation site and adjacent nerves

Semen collection and artificial inseminationin cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus)--a potential model for psittacines.

STUDY: Since many psittacine species are endangered and also rare in captivity, the number of offspring produced from breeding is crucial. Many potential breeding birds in species conservation programs are force-paired, and the eggs of many clutches are frequently infertile. Furthermore, male infertility is a common problem. The use of artificial insemination may increase the number of fertile eggs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, 32 cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) were divided into two groups. In one group, the males were endoscopically sterilised. The males of the other group were u

Caudal lumbar subarachnoid diverticulum in a Cockapoo.

We describe a Cockapoo with a subarachnoid diverticulum (Type III), at the level of L6-7. Magnetic resonance imaging identified a circumferential dilatation of the dural sac, extending from the cranial endplate of L6 to the midbody of L7, containing T2-weighted hyperintense and T1-weighted hypointense material that suppressed on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery sequences, consistent with cerebrospinal fluid. An exploratory dorsal laminectomy confirmed a subarachnoid diverticulum (Type III), and a durotomy was performed. After surgical decompression, full clinical resolution was observed. Th

An umbrella cockatoo (Cacatua alba) and two cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) were presented with rapidly enlarging masses of the head or wing joints. Historic trauma to these areas was confirmed in two cases. All birds were >2 yr of age, and two were female. Cytologic examination of fluid aspirated from masses in two cases was described as serosanguineous cytologically but failed to reveal inflammation, neoplasia, or microorganisms. Radiographic evaluation of these masses included proliferation and lysis of bone, suggestive of a neoplastic process. Histopathologic examination of surgically e
