Domain-driven verbal and non-verbal dissociations in cognition and social cognition in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Beyond motor symptoms, Parkinson's disease (PD) affects cognition and social cognition. This is already evident in cognitively intact PD, but is especially prominent in those with mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI). The impact of processing modality (verbal vs. non-verbal) remains unclear. We examined differences across verbal and non-verbal components of cognition and Theory of Mind (ToM) in subjects with PD or PD-MCI compared to healthy controls (HC). METHODS: Seventy-seven participants (HC = 26; PD = 28; PD-MCI = 23) completed a battery of neuropsychological tests to assess v

Affective cognition in bipolar disorder: A systematic review by the ISBD targeting cognition task force.

BACKGROUND: Impairments in affective cognition are part of the neurocognitive profile and possible treatment targets in bipolar disorder (BD), but the findings are heterogeneous. The International Society of Bipolar Disorder (ISBD) Targeting Cognition Task Force conducted a systematic review to (i) identify the most consistent findings in affective cognition in BD, and (ii) provide suggestions for affective cognitive domains for future study and meta-analyses. METHODS: The review included original studies reporting behavioral measures of affective cognition in BD patients vs controls followin

Team Cognition in Handoffs: Relating System Factors, Team Cognition Functions and Outcomes in Two Handoff Processes.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates how team cognition occurs in care transitions from operating room (OR) to intensive care unit (ICU). We then seek to understand how the sociotechnical system and team cognition are related. BACKGROUND: Effective handoffs are critical to ensuring patient safety and have been the subject of many improvement efforts. However, the types of team-level cognitive processing during handoffs have not been explored, nor is it clear how the sociotechnical system shapes team cognition. METHOD: We conducted this study in an academic, Level 1 trauma center in the Midwest

Sex Differences in Social Cognition and Association of Social Cognition and Neurocognition in Early Course Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Both impairment and sex differences in social cognition and neurocognition have been documented in schizophrenia. However, whether sex differences exist in the association between social cognition and neurocognition are not known. We aimed to investigate the contribution of areas of neurocognition to theory of mind (ToM) and hostility bias, representing social cognition, according to sex in early course schizophrenia. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we assessed neurocognition using the Japanese version of the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (BACS) and assess

Cognition and Long COVID: a Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Provide an overview of current knowledge regarding cognitive issues in patients with long COVID, also termed brain fog or cognitive COVID. RECENT FINDINGS: Subjective cognitive symptoms in long COVID patients are common but often go undetected by traditional standardised cognitive test batteries. This discrepancy poses a major clinical and societal problem, given the prevalence, protracted course and impact of cognitive COVID on work functioning. New, online assessment methods for cognitive function are feasible and corroborate subjective self-report symptoms, finding execut

[Multiple associations between tinnitus and cognition].

Tinnitus can impair cognitive functions, such as attention, working memory and executive control. Pathophysiologically, this is explained by maladaptive neural plasticity, in which central auditory and nonauditory networks (e.g., prefrontal and limbic structures) become overactive or dysfunctional. Altered activity patterns in the frontoparietal control network and the default mode network (DMN) are associated with increased attention to the ear noise and reduced cognitive capacity in tinnitus patients. In addition, dysfunctional cortico-subcortical interactions (including with the limbic syst

Cognition in trichotillomania: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Trichotillomania (TTM) is a mental health disorder characterized by repetitive urges to pull out one's hair. Cognitive deficits have been reported in people with TTM compared to controls; however, the current literature is sparse and inconclusive about affected domains. We aimed to synthesize research on cognitive functioning in TTM and investigate which cognitive domains are impaired. METHODS: After preregistration on the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO), we conducted a comprehensive literature search for papers examining cognition in people with

Social cognition in Idiopathic generalised epilepsies.

Social cognition is a set of mental skills necessary to create satisfactory interpersonal relationships and feel a sense of belonging to a social group. Its deficits significantly reduce the quality of life in people with epilepsy. Studies on social cognition and its impairments focus predominantly on people with focal epilepsies. Idiopathic generalised epilepsies are a group of diseases that share similar clinical, prognostic and electrographic characteristics. Despite their typically normal intelligence, people with Idiopathic generalised epilepsies can suffer from learning disabilities and

Folate deprivation induced neuroinflammation impairs cognition.

Nutritional status is associated with many neurocognitive diseases. Folate is one of the micronutrients, and its deficiency is associated with clinical outcomes of neurological diseases. Nevertheless, molecular mechanism behind the folate deficiency induced neurological disorders are not well-known. We have hypothesized that folate-deficiency is a cardinal determinant responsible for manifestation of cognitive impairment through inflammation mediated neurodegenerative pathologies. Objective of the current study was to assess whether folate deficiency is associated with cognitive dysfunction or

Exploring Cognition with Brain-Machine Interfaces.

Traditional brain-machine interfaces decode cortical motor commands to control external devices. These commands are the product of higher-level cognitive processes, occurring across a network of brain areas, that integrate sensory information, plan upcoming motor actions, and monitor ongoing movements. We review cognitive signals recently discovered in the human posterior parietal cortex during neuroprosthetic clinical trials. These signals are consistent with small regions of cortex having a diverse role in cognitive aspects of movement control and body monitoring, including sensorimotor inte

Neuromodulation of cognition in Parkinson's disease.

Neuromodulation is a widely used treatment for motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). It can be a highly effective treatment as a result of knowledge of circuit dysfunction associated with motor symptoms in PD. However, the mechanisms underlying cognitive symptoms of PD are less well-known, and the effects of neuromodulation on these symptoms are less consistent. Nonetheless, neuromodulation provides a unique opportunity to modulate motor and cognitive circuits while minimizing off-target side effects. We review the modalities of neuromodulation used in PD and the potential implications f

Speech dysfunction, cognition, and Parkinson's disease.

Communication difficulties are a ubiquitous symptom of Parkinson's disease and include changes to both motor speech and language systems. Communication challenges are a significant driver of lower quality of life. They are associated with decreased communication participation, social withdrawal, and increased risks for social isolation and stigmatization in persons with Parkinson's disease. Recent theoretical advances and experimental evidence underscore the intersection of cognition and motor processes in speech production and their impact on spoken language. This chapter overviews a growing

Cognition and serotonin in Parkinson's disease.

Cognitive impairment affects up to 80% of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and is associated with poor quality of life. PD cognitive dysfunction includes poor working memory, impairments in executive function and difficulty in set-shifting. The pathophysiology underlying cognitive impairment in PD is still poorly understood, but there is evidence to support involvements of the cholinergic, dopaminergic, and noradrenergic systems. Only rivastigmine, an acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitor, is efficacious for the treatment of PD dementia, which limits management of cognitive impairm

Cognition, mood and behavior in CADASIL.

CADASIL is the most common familial cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD). Stereotyped mutations of the NOTCH3 gene are responsible for this archetypal ischemic cSVD that can lead, at the very end stage, to severe dementia. Variable cognitive alterations, mood, or behavior disturbances are frequently observed during the course of the disease. In this review, these clinical manifestations, their occurrence, severity and duration are analyzed in relation to the disease progression. Also, the potential relationships with cerebral lesions and treatment options are discussed.

MicroRNA Networks in Cognition and Dementia.

The change from viewing noncoding RNA as "junk" in the genome to seeing it as a critical epigenetic regulator in almost every human condition or disease has forced a paradigm shift in biomedical and clinical research. Small and long noncoding RNA transcripts are now routinely evaluated as putative diagnostic or therapeutic agents. A prominent role for noncoding microRNAs in the central nervous system has uncovered promising new clinical candidates for dementia-related disorders, treatments for which currently remain elusive even as the percentage of diagnosed patients increases significantly.
