Coping in Children and Adolescents with a Genetic Muscle Disorder -Findings from a Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: The impacts of genetic muscle disorders on quality of life in affected children are well-documented. However, few studies have investigated children's coping strategies and relationships between coping and quality of life. OBJECTIVES: To determine coping strategy use, efficacy, and associations with quality of life in children with a genetic muscle disorder. METHODS: Forty-eight children (6-15 years, 58% male) with a genetic muscle disorder were identified as part of a national prevalence study. Children completed the Kidcope in response to a specific stressor (doctors visits) an

Reappraisal facilitates extinction in healthy and socially anxious individuals.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) combines cognitive restructuring with exposure to feared stimuli in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Due to the complexities of cognition–emotion interactions during ongoing CBT, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear, which hinders treatment optimization. METHODS: We created a laboratory analogue by combining reappraisal, a key ingredient of cognitive restructuring, with Pavlovian conditioning, a key ingredient in behavioral treatments. The novel differential Pavlovian acquisition and extinction task featured social stimuli a

[Treatment of panic disorder with combination of SSRI and cognitive-behavioral therapy].

GOAL: Various forms of treatment of panic disorder with and without agoraphobia have shown good results. We examined the combination of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy and treatment with an SSRI. METHODS: Case report and literature review. RESULT: The combination treatment shows a faster onset of therapeutic effects than cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy. However, final outcomes are comparable. CONCLUSIONS: The addition of a SSRI to cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy accelerates the onset of therapeutic effects. It does not interfere with the cognitive restructuring aimed at cognitive-b

[Cognitive psychotherapy of social phobia and generalized anxiety disorder].

Recent years have seen a better understanding of the psychological changes underlying social phobia and generalized anxiety disorder, and successful methods of cognitive psychotherapy have been developed. Exposure to social situations causing anxiety and cognitive restructuring has diminished social anxiety. An underlying factor in generalized anxiety disorder is, among other things, a difficulty to deal with and tolerate uncertainty. Adaptation of distressing dysfunctional metacognitions has recently emerged alongside conventional cognitive-behavioral treatment modalities.

The Dental Cognitions Questionnaire in CBT for dental phobia in an adolescent with multiple phobias.

A case of an adolescent boy with multiple phobias who was treated successfully for his dental phobia is described to illustrate the clinical utility of the Dental Cognitions Questionnaire (DCQ) in aiding effective cognitive-behavior therapy. The client showed drops in dental anxiety that coincided with the use of the DCQ in cognitive restructuring, and there was a close correlation between dental cognitions and degree of dental anxiety over the time-course of therapy and follow up.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for hoarding in the context of contamination fears.

Difficulty discarding and excessive acquiring can be treated using specialized cognitive-behavioral treatment that includes motivational interviewing, skills training, practice sorting and discarding, and cognitive restructuring. Early psychotherapy efforts to treat hoarding have proved less effective than this combination of methods targeted at the characteristic features of hoarding. Treatment strategies are illustrated through a case example of a woman struggling with both hoarding and contamination concerns.

Do coping mechanisms moderate the effect of stressful life events on depression and anxiety in young people? A case-control study from Latin America.

BACKGROUND: Stressful life events (SLEs) are associated with increased risk of depression or anxiety. Coping mechanisms may moderate this relationship but little is known on this topic in young people or in Latin America. AIM: To investigate whether coping strategies predict odds of depression and/or anxiety and moderate the relationship between SLEs and depression and/or anxiety in young people in Peru, Lima and Bogotá. METHOD: Using case-control data from people aged 15-24, we used logistic regression to examine associations between coping mechanism, SLEs and caseness for depression or anx

Psychosocial treatment of phobia and panic disorders.

Intervention packages combining cognitive restructuring techniques and exposure exercises have become the psychosocial treatments of choice for panic, agoraphobia, and social phobia. Exposure and related desensitization techniques are the treatment of choice for all variants of simple phobia. Combining psychotropic medication and cognitive-behavior therapy suggests strategies that offer new opportunities for increasing the number of individuals with anxiety disorders who can be effectively treated with a biobehavioral approach.

Probing the Cognitive Mechanism of Mental Representational Change During Chunk Decomposition: A Parametric fMRI Study.

Chunk decomposition plays an important role in cognitive flexibility in particular with regards to representational change, which is critical for insight problem solving and creative thinking. In this study, we investigated the cognitive mechanism of decomposing Chinese character chunks through a parametric fMRI design. Our results from this parametric manipulation revealed widely distributed activations in frontal, parietal, and occipital cortex and negative activations in parietal and visual areas in response to chunk tightness during decomposition. To mentally manipulate the element of a gi

Active Components in Internet-Based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder: A Randomized Full Factorial Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Many studies have demonstrated that social anxiety disorder (SAD) can be effectively treated with psychotherapy, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), including internet-based CBT (ICBT). Despite evidence-based treatments, many individuals do not sufficiently benefit from them. Identifying the active components could help improve the effectiveness of SAD treatment. This study tested the effects of four treatment components (psychoeducation, cognitive restructuring, attention training, and exposure) within ICBT for SAD to investigate its active components. METHODS: Thi
