Reflections on David E. Rumelhart and the Rumelhart Prize.

The 25th anniversary of the Rumelhart Prize in Cognitive Science and a special issue of Topics in Cognitive Science celebrating the achievements of two recent Rumelhart Prize recipients provides an opportunity to reflect on the prize, the scientists that it honors, and the scientific values it seeks to promote. I offer my perspective on these topics as a long-time member of the Cognitive Science Society, a collaborator and friend of David Rumelhart, and as the first chair of the Rumelhart Prize selection committee. I see the prize as celebrating several aspects of what I believe many cognitive

The social perceptual deficits of schizophrenia.

This article summarizes a series of studies conducted by our group that examined the social perceptual deficits of schizophrenia. Research suggested that social perceptual deficits are more pronounced in patients with nonparanoid schizophrenia than comparison groups comprising normal controls or individuals with paranoid schizophrenia. The social perceptual deficits of schizophrenia were affected by the level of abstraction of cue descriptors; the level of emotional arousal engendered by the situation; the presence of extraneous, emotionally arousing stimuli; and the familiarity of the situati

[Novel advances in neuropsychology--forward to the "deconstruction" of psychiatry].

Neuropsychology has recently become a science which deals not only with instrumental disorders (e.g., aphasia, apraxia, and agnosia), but also with impairments of interpersonal relationships (e.g., emotional cognitions, social decision making, and understanding others), and many important paradigms are already provided. We could enumerate several representative instances: (1)application of the "theory of mind" to autistic or related disorders (-->"reasoning of psychological state of others"), (2) neuropsychological studies on the "social brain" concerning emotional recognition or social recogn

The neurobiology of psychopathic traits in youths.

Conduct disorder is a childhood behaviour disorder that is characterized by persistent aggressive or antisocial behaviour that disrupts the child's environment and impairs his or her functioning. A proportion of children with conduct disorder have psychopathic traits. Psychopathic traits consist of a callous-unemotional component and an impulsive-antisocial component, which are associated with two core impairments. The first is a reduced empathic response to the distress of other individuals, which primarily reflects reduced amygdala responsiveness to distress cues; the second is deficits in d

Mood disorders: neurocognitive models.

OBJECTIVES: In recent years, a number of neurocognitive models stemming from psychiatry and psychology schools of thought have conceptualized the pathophysiology of mood disorders in terms of dysfunctional neural mechanisms that underpin and drive neurocognitive processes. Though these models have been useful for advancing our theoretical understanding and facilitating important lines of research, translation of these models and their application within the clinical arena have been limited-partly because of lack of integration and synthesis. Cognitive neuroscience provides a novel perspective

Executive function predictors of science achievement in middle-school students.

Cognitive flexibility as measured by the Wisconsin Card Sort Task (WCST) has long been associated with frontal lobe function. More recently, this construct has been associated with executive function (EF), which shares overlapping neural correlates. Here, we investigate the relationship between EF, cognitive flexibility, and science achievement in adolescents. This is important because there are fewer educational neuroscience studies of scientific reasoning than of other academically relevant forms of cognition (i.e., mathematical thinking and language understanding). Eighth grade students at

Prospect theory on the brain? Toward a cognitive neuroscience of decision under risk.

Most decisions must be made without advance knowledge of their consequences. Economists and psychologists have devoted much attention to modeling decisions made under conditions of risk in which options can be characterized by a known probability distribution over possible outcomes. The descriptive shortcomings of classical economic models motivated the development of prospect theory (D. Kahneman, A. Tversky, Prospect theory: An analysis of decision under risk. Econometrica, 4 (1979) 263-291; A. Tversky, D. Kahneman, Advances in prospect theory: Cumulative representation of uncertainty. Journa

Selecting and tracking multiple objects.

When interacting with the world, people can dynamically split attention across multiple objects in the environment, both when the objects are stationary and when the objects are moving. This type of visual processing is commonly studied in lab settings using either static selection tasks or moving tracking tasks. We describe performance limits that are common to both tasks, including limits on capacity, crowding, visual hemifield arrangement, and speed. Because these shared limits on performance suggest common underlying mechanisms, we examine a set of models that might account for limits acro

Evaluating the neuropsychological dissociation evidence for multiple memory systems.

This article presents a critical evaluation of the logic and nature of the neuropsychological dissociation evidence that has provided one of the essential lines of support for claims of multiple memory systems--specifically, suggesting that amnesia selectively compromises, and an intact hippocampal system selectively supports, a particular form of memory. An analysis of the existing neuropsychological dissociation evidence is offered in which different classes of evidence--different dissociation approaches-are identified and characterized. The logic of these neuropsychological dissociation app

Application of stochastic modeling to the assessment of group and individual differences in cognitive functioning.

This article begins with a guiding schema of relations among cognitive science, clinical science, and assessment technology. Emphasis is placed on stochastic modeling of cognitive processes. Basic models are adjusted so as to parsimoniously accommodate performance deviations occurring with psychopathology. Modified portions of models indicate functions affected by disorder, whereas portions remaining intact indicate spared functions. Findings from clinical cognitive science are applied to the individual case using Bayesian procedures. Methods are instantiated with respect to cognitive psychopa

Do agoraphobics interpret the environment in large shops and supermarkets differently?

Agoraphobics typically have difficulties in visiting supermarkets. The brief report presents results of a survey investigating the properties of supermarkets which provoke or ease anxiety-related responses in shoppers (N = 500) and two further groups: agoraphobics (N = 40) and participants responding to a local press advert (N = 54). Results showed that layout features, stairways and diminished access were rated as more anxiety provoking in the agoraphobic-type groups compared to general shoppers. The safety-signal model of agoraphobic behaviour was supported although some evidence of dysfunct

[Post-traumatic stress disorder in reaction to psychotic experience: A systematic revue].

BACKGROUND: The update of the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM5) emphasizes the definition of psychological traumatism as an objective and external event. Nevertheless, the scientific debate about the criteriology of PTSD, its clinical pertinence for application and the role of subjective dimension appears still open. Although the relation between psychotrauma and psychosis has been well examined, in the way of trauma as a risk factor for the development of schizophrenia, the potential traumatism repres

Innovative curriculum: Integrating the bio-behavioral and social science principles across the LifeStages in basic science years.

Behavioral and social science integration in clinical practice improves health outcomes across the life stages. The medical school curriculum requires an integration of the behavioral and social science principles in early medical education. We developed and delivered a four-week course entitled "LifeStages" to the first year medical students. The learning objectives of the bio-behavioral and social science principles along with the cultural, economic, political, and ethical parameters were integrated across the lifespan in the curriculum matrix. We focused on the following major domains: Grow

The phoneme: A conceptual heritage from alphabetic literacy.

In contemporaneous cognitive psychology and cognitive science, literacy is not a central concept. In this paper, on the contrary, it is argued that both cognition and cognitive science are deeply influenced by literacy. Before addressing the experimental work on the structure of speech and spoken language, one of the major themes of Jacques Mehler's work, I recall his links with the Brussels Laboratory of Experimental Psychology and the important influence he had on the discipline and on our work. Most of the present paper is a discussion of the concept of the phoneme, its dependence on litera

Cognitive therapy, nutritional therapy and their combination in the treatment of bulimia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: This study compared the effectiveness of cognitive therapy (CT), nutritional therapy (NT), the combination of cognitive and nutritional therapy (CNT), against a control condition of support group (SG) in the treatment of bulimia nervosa. METHODS: One hundred female out-patients who fulfilled DSM-III-R criteria for bulimia nervosa were randomized to the four treatment groups. NT and CT were designed to cover different areas with minimal overlap, and CNT provided all of the features of both of these treatments. The control condition was conducted in a group self-help format. Each of

Oral microbiome perturbations link periodontal health to cognitive ageing in a large community cohort.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence implicates the oral-brain axis in neurodegeneration, yet large community-based studies remain limited. This study aimed to examine associations between periodontal health, oral microbiome, and cognitive performance, and to explore potential biological pathways underlying these relationships. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 1157 participants from the community-based Taizhou Imaging Study, all of whom underwent comprehensive periodontal examinations, salivary microbiome profiling, and cognitive assessments. A measure of knowledge flow between specific fields: Implications of interdisciplinarity for impact and funding.

Encouraging knowledge flow between mutually relevant disciplines is a worthy aim of research policy makers. Yet, it is less clear what types of research promote cross-disciplinary knowledge flow and whether such research generates particularly influential knowledge. Empirical questions remain as to how to identify knowledge-flow mediating research and how to provide support for this research. This study contributes to addressing these gaps by proposing a new way to identify knowledge-flow mediating research at the individual research article level, instead of at more aggregated levels. We iden

Some challenges in using multilayer networks to bridge brain and mind.

The application of techniques from network science to create single-layer networks of the brain and mind has resulted in significant advances in the neuro- (i.e., structural and functional brain networks) and cognitive sciences (i.e., cognitive network science). Recent advances in network science on multilayer networks increase the possibility that a "network of networks" might finally connect the physical brain to the intangible mind, much like physical fibre optic cables and wires connect to other layers of the internet to allow intangible social networks to form in various social media plat

The cognitive neuroscience of remote episodic, semantic and spatial memory.

The processes and mechanisms implicated in retention and retrieval of memories as they age is an enduring problem in cognitive neuroscience. Research from lesion and functional neuroimaging studies on remote episodic, semantic and spatial memory in humans is crucial for evaluating three theories of hippocampal and/or medial temporal lobe-neocortical interaction in memory retention and retrieval: cognitive map theory, standard consolidation theory and multiple trace theory. Each theory makes different predictions regarding first, the severity and extent of retrograde amnesia following lesions t

Altering the Cognitive-Affective Dysfunctions of Psychopathic and Externalizing Offender Subtypes with Cognitive Remediation.

Cognitive remediation is a treatment approach with the potential to translate basic science into more specific, mechanism-based interventions by targeting particular cognitive skills. The present study translated understanding of two well-defined cognitive-emotion dysfunctions into novel deficit-matched interventions and evaluated whether cognitive remediation would demonstrate specific and generalizable change. Two antisocial-subtypes, individuals with psychopathy and externalizing traits, are characterized by cognitive-affective problems that predispose them to engage in significant substanc
