Metabolic Syndrome and Bladder Cancer Risk: A Meta-Analysis of Cohort Studies.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to systematically assess the relationship between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and the incidence of bladder cancer. METHODS: We performed a comprehensive search of the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane CENTRAL, Web of Science, and Scopus databases to retrieve eligible cohort studies. Pooled relative risk (RR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were estimated using a random-effects model. Robustness was checked via a leave-one-out sensitivity analysis. Publication bias was assessed both graphically (funnel plots) and statistically (Begg's and Egger's tests). RESUL

Combating Post-colonoscopy Colorectal Cancer: Insight from the Trials and Cohort Studies.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a significant global health concern, being the third most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death. A colonoscopy examination is central to CRC prevention, enabling screening and adenoma removal. Nevertheless, the emergence of post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer (PCCRC), which is a CRC diagnosed after a colonoscopy that initially found no malignancy, highlights the critical gaps in the quality of current colonoscopy practices. Missed lesions, particularly those with a non-polypoid morphology or in the proximal colon, are the leading caus

Benchmark dose modeling for epidemiological dose-response assessment using prospective cohort studies.

Benchmark dose (BMD) methodology has been employed as a default dose-response modeling approach to determine the toxicity value of chemicals to support regulatory chemical risk assessment. Especially, a relatively standardized BMD analysis framework has been established for modeling toxicological data regarding the formats of input data, dose-response models, definitions of benchmark response, and model uncertainty consideration. However, the BMD approach has not been well developed for epidemiological data mainly because of the diverse designs of epidemiological studies and various formats of

Survivorship research in advanced gynecological cancer: A scoping review of cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Recent calls to action highlight the need to address gaps in our understanding of survivorship for those living with advanced gynecological cancer to support optimal care. To ensure future research fills these knowledge gaps, we need to understand the breadth of existing survivorship research in this patient group, including the outcomes assessed, the populations included and the duration and retention in follow-up. METHODS: We conducted a systematic scoping review searching PubMed, PsychINFO, and CINAHL during the month of November 2022 to identify prospective cohort studies meas

Anti-inflammatory diet and incident peripheral artery disease: Two prospective cohort studies.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Systemic inflammation plays a role in peripheral artery disease (PAD), and therefore, an anti-inflammatory diet may reduce PAD risk. We examined the association between the anti-inflammatory diet and PAD risk by smoking status, a trigger of systemic inflammation. METHODS: The study was based on two cohorts of 82 295 Swedish adults aged 45-83 years (38 823 women from Swedish Mammography Cohort and 45 472 men from Cohort of Swedish Men). An anti-inflammatory diet index (AIDI; 0-17 scores) was used to estimate the anti-inflammatory potential of diet. Cox proportional hazards r

Vitamin D supplementation worsens Alzheimer's progression: Animal model and human cohort studies.

Vitamin D deficiency has been epidemiologically linked to Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementias, but no interventional studies have proved causality. Our previous work revealed that the genomic vitamin D receptor (VDR) is already converted into a non-genomic signaling pathway by forming a complex with p53 in the AD brain. Here, we extend our previous work to assess whether it is beneficial to supplement AD mice and humans with vitamin D. Intriguingly, we first observed that APP/PS1 mice fed a vitamin D-sufficient diet showed significantly lower levels of serum vitamin D, suggesting its

Vegetarian diet and risk of gout in two separate prospective cohort studies.

BACKGROUNDS & AIMS: Plant-based diets may target multiple pathways in gout pathogenesis (uric acid reduction and anti-inflammation) while improving gout associated cardiometabolic comorbidities. We aim to prospectively examine the relationship between a vegetarian diet and gout, and to explore if this relationship is independent of hyperuricemia. METHODS: We followed 4903 participants in the Tzu Chi Health Study (Cohort1, recruited in 2007-2009) and 9032 participants in the Tzu Chi Vegetarian Study (Cohort2, recruited in 2005) until end of 2014. Gender-specific risk factors for gout: a systematic review of cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Though gout is more prevalent in men than women, it remains unclear whether gender influences risk factors for incident gout. We aimed to systematically review all cohort studies examining risk factors for the development of gout by gender. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to March 2019. Risk factors for gout examined were: age, ethnicity, consumption of alcohol, meat, seafood, dairy products, purine-rich vegetables, coffee and fructose, vitamin C intake, the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, metabolic syndro

Semiparametric regression analysis of doubly censored failure time data from cohort studies.

Doubly censored failure time data occur when the failure time of interest represents the elapsed time between two events, an initial event and a subsequent event, and the observations on both events may suffer censoring. A well-known example of such data is given by the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) cohort study in which the two events are HIV infection and AIDS diagnosis, and several inference methods have been developed in the literature for their regression analysis. However, all of them only apply to limited situations or focus on a single model. In this paper, we propose a ma

Hypertension and Diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease: A Meta-Analysis of Cohort Studies.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension has been associated with cognitive dysfunction in the general population and patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, there are contradictory data regarding the potential association between hypertension and diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD), the second most common neurodegenerative disorder after AD. The purpose of this meta-analysis is to synthesize data from cohort studies to explore the potential association between preexisting hypertension and subsequent PD diagnosis. METHODS: The PubMed and Embase databases were searched to identify all relevant stud

Bias correction of estimates of familial risk from population-based cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: In addition to guiding molecular epidemiology investigations, estimates of the increased risk of disease in relatives of affected persons are also important for screening and counselling decisions. Since precise estimation of such familial risks (FRs) requires large sample sizes, many of the estimates in common use have been obtained from historical electronic records of disease in entire populations, where the relatives of affected and unaffected persons are compared. These estimates may be biased due to failure to identify relatives as affected if they are diagnosed before the st

Smoking and gastric cancer: systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies.

OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic review of studies addressing the relation between cigarette smoking and gastric cancer to estimate the magnitude of the association for different levels of exposure and cancer locations. METHODS: Published cohort, case-cohort, and nested case-control studies were identified through PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science searches, from inception to July 2007. Relative risk (RR) estimates referring to the comparison of two categories of exposure (e.g., current smokers vs. never smokers) were combined using a random effects model. Obstructive sleep apnea and selected comorbidities - a literature review of cohort studies.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common type of sleep-related breathing disorder, characterized by repeated episodes of upper airway collapse and resulting hypoxia during sleep. Intermittent hypoxemia may exert a multisystemic impact and modulate the course of comorbidities. Pathophysiological mechanisms such as oxidative stress, inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction contribute to adverse health outcomes including cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular complications, metabolic disorders, cancer, neurodegenerative conditions, or behavioral abnormalities. Treatment of OSA may mitig
