Global warming increasingly challenges thermoregulation in endothermic animals, particularly in hot and dry environments where low water availability and high temperature increase the risk of hyperthermia. In birds, un-feathered body parts such as the head and bill work as 'thermal windows', because heat flux is higher compared to more insulated body regions. We studied how such structures were used in different thermal environments, and if heat flux properties change with time in a given temperature. We acclimated zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) to two different ambient temperatures, 'col

The present investigation was designed to examine the influence of water temperature and prior hyperventilation on some of the potentially hazardous responses evoked by immersion in cold water. Eight naked subjects performed headout immersions of 2-min duration into stirred water at 5, 10, and 15 degrees C and at 10 degrees C after 1 min of voluntary hyperventilation. Analysis of the respiratory and cardiac data collected during consecutive 10-s periods showed that, at the 0.18-m/s rate of immersion employed, differences between the variables recorded on immersion in water at 5 and 10 degrees

To facilitate analysis of mechanisms involved in cold water near-drowning, maximum breath-hold duration (BHD) and diving bradycardia were measured in 160 humans who were submerged in water temperatures from 0 to 35 degrees C at 5 degrees C intervals. For sudden submersion BHD was dependent on water temperature (Tw) according to the equation BHD = 15.01 + 0.92Tw. In cold water (0-15 degrees C), BHD was greatly reduced, being 25-50% of the presubmersion duration. BHD after brief habituation to water temperature and mild, voluntary hyperventilation was more than double that of sudden submersion a

Awake domestic pigeons, either maintained at 22 degrees C (series I) or acutely exposed at 2 degrees C (series II), were studied in a hypobaric chamber at 140 m and at various stages during a 4-week exposure to 4000 m. Steady-state pulmonary ventilation (Vg) and breathing pattern (VT, fr), oxygen consumption (MO2), O2 concentrations and pressures in the arterial (a) and mixed venous blood (v), hematocrit (Ht) and acid-base status in arterial blood, systolic blood pressure and heart frequency (fH) were measured. From these data cardiac output (Vb) and stroke volume (Vs), ventilatory and circula

Current scientific evidence shows that the weather conditions which cause heatwaves in Spain are also linked to factors that contribute to increased air pollution from NO2, O3 and PM. Both air pollution and temperature affect the same diseases and vulnerable groups. Extreme temperatures prevention plans do not take the effects of air pollution into account. We conducted an ecological time series study of Spain's 47 provinces (2014-2023), daily all-cause mortality (ICD-10: A00-R99) was used. Using the Haugh-Pierce methodology, mortality anomalies were correlated with the daily maximum/minimum t

Aging adversely impacts thermoregulatory function, thereby increasing the risk of intraoperative hypothermia. Age-associated alterations-including diminished thermal perception, impaired autonomic responsiveness, reduced thermogenic capacity due to sarcopenia, and decreased cardiovascular adaptability, exacerbate the vulnerability to hypothermia. Concomitant comorbidities and polypharmacy further compromise thermal homeostasis in geriatric patients. Anesthetic agents compound this risk by lowering the thresholds for vasoconstriction and shivering and attenuating the magnitude of thermal respon

The mammalian brain controls heat generation and heat loss mechanisms that regulate body temperature and energy metabolism. Thermoeffectors include brown adipose tissue, cutaneous blood flow and skeletal muscle, and metabolic energy sources include white adipose tissue. Neural and metabolic pathways modulating the activity and functional plasticity of these mechanisms contribute not only to the optimization of function during acute challenges, such as ambient temperature changes, infection and stress, but also to longitudinal adaptations to environmental and internal changes. Exposure of human

BACKGROUND: Pre-intensive care unit (ICU) induction of targeted temperature management (TTM) with cold intravenous (i.v.) fluids does not appear to improve outcomes after in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). We hypothesized that this may be due to ineffective cooling and side effects.
METHODS: A post hoc analysis of a sub-group of patients (n = 352) in the TTH48 trial (NCT01689077) who received or did not receive pre-ICU cooling using cold i.v. fluids. Data collection included patient characteristics, cardiac arrest factors, cooling methods, side effects and continuous core temperature m

Male subjects comprised of six Inuit from Igloolik, N.W.T., and five Orientals and six Caucasians from Toronto, Ont., volunteered for tests to determine the effect of localized cold stress on peripheral temperatures. In each subject, skin temperatures of the right index finger, the arm, and the cheek, as well as blood pressure and heart rate, were measured before, during, and after foot immersion in water of 10 degrees C temperature for 10 min. There was an immediate decrease in finger temperature on foot immersion in all three subject groups; however, the Inuit finger temperatures recovered v

Tunica dartos smooth muscle (TDSM) lies beneath the scrotal skin, and its contraction leads to scrotum wrinkling upon cooling. However, neither the nature of TDSM cold-sensitivity nor the underlying molecular sensors are well understood. Here we have investigated the role of cold/menthol-sensitive TRPM8 channel in TDSM temperature-dependent contractility. The contraction of isolated male rat TDSM strips was studied by tensiometry. TRPM8 expression was assayed by RT-PCR and fluorescence immunochemistry. Isolated TDSM strips responded to cooling from 33 °C to 20 °C by enhancement of basal tensio

PURPOSE: The purpose was to examine whether associations exist between temperature responses in the fingers vs. toes and hand vs. foot during local cold-water immersion and rewarming phases.
METHODS: Seventy healthy subjects (58 males, 12 females) immersed their right hand or right foot, respectively, in 8 °C water for 30 min (CWI phase), followed by a 15-min spontaneous rewarming (RW) in 25 °C air temperature.
RESULTS: Temperature was lower in the toes than the fingers during the baseline phase (27.8 ± 3.0 vs. 33.9 ± 2.5 °C, p < 0.001), parts of the CWI phase (min 20-30: 8.8 ± 0.7 vs. 9.7 ±

BACKGROUND: Although extensive literature is available on the viscosity of thickened beverages with food thickeners, no attempt has been made to study the effect of setting time on the viscosity of pudding-like cold-thickened beverages with xanthan gum (XG)-based thickeners by using a rheometer. In particular, it is of considerable practical importance to investigate the effect of setting time on their viscosity at 5°C because some cold-thickened beverages will be prepared in the kitchen in bulk and stored at 5°C before serving or consuming rather than serving immediately upon mixing with thic

Exostoses of the external auditory canal (EEAC) are a commonly encountered clinical exam finding; however, exostoses in other locations are vanishingly rare. The postoperative paranasal sinuses are penetrated with cold water solutions, the reputed etiological agent for EEAC, and development of exostoses in this unexpected location may be observed endoscopically. The surprising appearance of these protuberant lesions within the sinuses could be mistaken for more ominous processes, subjecting the patient to biopsy, surgery, or unnecessary medical therapy. The radiologic appearance of exostoses w

Since nine years multicentre, transversal and longitudinal clinical studies on hand-arm, vibration-exposed patients are being performed in cooperation with French occupational medicine centers and social security institutions. These studies are based upon current clinical assessment and standardized, temperature-measuring cooling tests. Data acquisition uses a portable, 10-channel, micro-processor-based temperature recorder and miniature thermal sensors. Temperature is monitored at the ten finger tips continuously, before, during and after a cold stress performed in strictly controlled conditi

Whether increasing respiratory heat loss (RHL) during exercise under heat stress can contain elevation of rectal temperature (Tre) was examined. Eight men cycled twice at 45-50% their maximum work rate until exhaustion at ambient temperature and relative humidity of 38 degrees C and 90-95%, respectively. They inspired either cold (3.6 degrees C) or ambient air in random sequence. When subjects breathed cold air during 23 min of exercise, a ninefold increase in RHL was observed vs. similar work during hot air inhalation (32.81 vs. 3.46 W). Respiratory frequency (f) and rate of rise in Tre decre
