First record of the subfamily Brenthorrhininae (Coleoptera, Nemonychidae) in Cretaceous Kachin amber.

A new tribe, Burmoptarthrini Legalov, trib. nov. from the subfamily Brenthorrhininae (Nemonychidae), with a new genus and species, Burmoptarthrus storozhenkoi Legalov, gen. et sp. nov., is described and illustrated from late Cretaceous Kachin amber. This new tribe can be distinguished from the tribes Eccoptarthrini, Brenthorrhini and Distenorrhinini by its strongly constricted head capsule behind the eyes, which protrude strongly from the head. It also has a coarsely punctate and granulated pronotum and head, as well as granulated lateral pronotal margins. A key to the tribes and a list of des

Observations on the ultrastructure of the oral appendages of Glenea cantor Fabricius (Coleoptera: Lamiinae).

Using scanning electron microscopy, we examined the gross and ultrastructure morphology of the mandibles, labial palpi, and mandibular palpi of adult male and female Glenea cantor beetles. The morphology of these parts, both in their gross and ultrastructure, varied significantly between males and females. The lengths of the mandible, labial palpi, and mandibular palpi were clearly noticeably longer in females than in men, which is mostly related to the oviposition mechanism. In terms of the ultrastructural morphology of the mandibles, labial palpi, and mandibular palpi, seven types of sensill

Characterization of Antibiosis to Diabrotica speciosa (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in Brazilian Maize Landraces.

Resistance to insect pests can be found in several native, landrace plants and can be an important alternative to conventional control methods. Diabrotica speciosa (Germar) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) larvae are important maize (Zea mays L.) (Cyperales: Poaceae) root pests and finding native resistance in landraces would greatly contribute to maize-breeding programs aimed at controlling this pest. This study investigated whether the growth, survival, oviposition rhythm, fecundity, and fertility of D. speciosa are negatively influenced by specific maize landraces, and the existence of any morph

A SEM study of the antenna and mouthparts of Omosita colon (Linnaeus) (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae).

There are direct relationships between the behavioral mechanisms and sensilla. To obtain a better understanding of the behavioral mechanisms in Omosita colon (Linnaeus) (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), we investigated the types, quantities, and distribution of sensilla on the antenna and mouthparts of O. colon by scanning electron microscopy. The clavate antenna comprised the scape, pedicel, and nine segment flagellomeres and had six types of sensilla, including two subtypes of sensilla chaetica (SC), three subtypes of sensilla basiconica (SB) and sensilla trichodea (ST), and one type of sensilla ca

Stimulating Lasioderma serricorne (Coleoptera: Ptinidae) oviposition using food extract-treated filter papers.

The cigarette beetle (Lasioderma serricorne (F.) (Coleoptera: Ptinidae)) is a common pest in storage facilities and causes significant economic losses due to its ability to infest a wide range of stored products. Collecting eggs laid by this pest on food substrates such as flour can be tedious and time-consuming, particularly when eggs of specific age are required for research purposes in large numbers. The objective of this study was to develop a method for facilitating egg collection. This was explored by stimulating cigarette beetle oviposition on filter papers treated with ethanol extracts

Multi-model assessments to characterize occurrences of emerald ash borer (Coleoptera: Buprestidae).

Introduction and spread of nonindigenous species present a formidable threat to forest health. The emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis, is an East Asian-origin insect that has devastated ash (Fraxinus spp.) trees across the United States and parts of Canada since 2002. Proactive surveillance using high-performing predictive models could aid in mitigating pest risk. Predictor variables and modeling methods are important considerations in such analysis. Therefore, we assessed whether relevant single predictors, a combination of predictors grouped under a certain driver category, or mult

Molecular Characterization of Kunitz-Type Protease Inhibitors from Blister Beetles (Coleoptera, Meloidae).

Protease inhibitors are widely studied since the unrestricted activity of proteases can cause extensive organ lesions. In particular, elastase activity is involved in the pathophysiology of acute lung injury, for example during SARS-CoV-2 infection, while serine proteases and thrombin-like proteases are involved in the development and/or pathology of the nervous system. Natural protease inhibitors have the advantage to be reversible and with few side effects and thus are increasingly considered as new drugs. Kunitz-type protease inhibitors (KTPIs), reported in the venom of various organisms, s

Antixenosis resistance to Oulema melanopus (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in central Asian wheat germplasm.

ABSTRACT The cereal leaf beetle, Oulema melanopus (L.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), which is Eurasian in origin, is an emerging pest of agriculturally important cereal crops in western Canada, including wheat, oat, and barley. Among these crops, wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) has the highest number of resistant genotypes to O. melanopus infestation. Here we explored six genotypes from central Asia with putative resistance to the beetle in comparison with a widely grown Canadian wheat variety. We noted the highest oviposition on the susceptible control genotype, CDC GO, and the lowest on one of t

Diel emergence and dispersal rhythms in the bamboo borer Dinoderus minutus (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae).

Biological rhythms regulate insect activity and represent a conserved adaptive trait across life forms. Understanding the behavioral rhythms of dispersive cryptic species is important for elucidating their ecological interactions and improving pest management strategies. In this study, we investigated the diel patterns of emergence and flight activity of the bamboo borer Dinoderus minutus under field and laboratory conditions using a chronobiological approach. Field emergence was evaluated using emergence cages containing naturally infested bamboo culms, whereas flight activity was monitored u

Wireworms (Coleoptera: Elateridae) Use Root Volatiles and CO2 to Discriminate Among Host Plants.

In the absence of visual signals, subterranean arthropods rely on olfactory and tactile cues to navigate toward resources. Here, in a series of pairwise dual-choice bioassays, we investigated the Limonius californicus (Col., Elateridae) larva response to wheat, pea, and bean seedlings in sand-filled olfactometers. We then quantified volatile organic compounds (VOC) emitted from roots. Wireworm preference for beans compared to wheat was attributed to the higher CO2 emission. Wireworm preference for peas compared to wheat was attributed to the higher amounts (µg/hr) of hexanal emitted from pea r

Morphological Study of Left-Right Head Asymmetry in Doubledaya bucculenta (Coleoptera: Erotylidae: Languriinae).

Left-right asymmetry in paired organs is well documented across various species, including the claws of fiddler crabs and snail-eating snakes' dentition. However, the mechanisms underlying these asymmetries remain largely elusive. This study investigates Doubledaya bucculenta (Coleoptera: Erotylidae), a lizard beetle species known for pronounced left-sided asymmetry in adult female mandible and gena. Given that insect mouthparts comprise multiple functionally significant appendages, we aimed to clarify the degree of asymmetry extending beyond the mandibles and genae. Phenotypic morphology was

Effects of elicitors on plant host selection by adult Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

The Colorado Potato Beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say, is the principal defoliator of potato crops globally. It is well known for its propensity to rapidly develop resistance. Thus, new control options which are resilient to the pest's resistance capabilities are a critical need. The use of chemical ecology in integrated pest management (IPM) programs has been proposed as a means to delay resistance. Elicitors are chemical growth regulators that activate plant defenses. These plant defenses provide numerous opportunities to integrate chemical ecology into IPM programs, including changes to
