Snow skiing combined anterior cruciate ligament/medial collateral ligament disruptions.

Recent reports indicate that combined anterior cruciate ligament/medial collateral ligament (ACL/MCL) knee injuries are usually associated with a lateral meniscus tear. In our center, snow skiing is the athletic activity most frequently associated with this double-ligament injury complex. A sports-specific analysis was undertaken to evaluate the hypothesis that the snow skiing ligament injury is different from similar injuries caused by other athletic activities. Of a total of 64 acute arthroscopically confirmed tears of both the MCL and ACL, 23 were caused by snow skiing and 41 by nonskiing a

A Suture Method for Collateral Ligaments of the Finger Proximal Interphalangeal Joint: A Cadaver Study.

PURPOSE: In a cadaveric model, a comparison was made of the strength of a suture method for collateral ligaments (the N method) with that of simple sutures using suture anchors for the repair of collateral ligaments in the proximal interphalangeal joint. METHODS: We obtained 72 fingers from 18 upper limbs of fresh-frozen cadavers and compared the left and right sides of the same specimens. In experiment 1, we examined the rupture strength and rupture sites of intact collateral ligaments in 24 fingers. In experiment 2, we compared the rupture strength and failure modes of the N method (three l

Selective muscle activation following electrical stimulation of the collateral ligaments of the human knee joint.

The objective of this study was to establish the presence of a local neurosensory reflex are from mechanoreceptors in human collateral ligaments and joint capsule to knee muscles and to determine if these muscles could be selectively activated as varus or valgus stabilizers using randomized trials. All studies were performed in the research department laboratories. Eleven subjects were recruited from the university staff and students based on no prior history of knee ailments. Subjects laid supine on an experimentation table as a current-modulated electrical stimulation was provided through th

Three-dimensional analysis of the palmar plate and collateral ligaments at the proximal interphalangeal joint.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the palmar plate complex at the proximal interphalangeal joint using a three-dimensional (3D) technique, which makes it easier to understand the dimensions of structures and their relationship to the adjacent components. This method allows individual elements to be removed virtually, facilitating clearer observation of each component. Sixteen cadaveric specimens were dissected and reconstructed in a 3D virtual environment. The palmar plate is made up of a distal, fibrous portion and a proximal, membranous portion, which anchors distally on the base of t

Simultaneous rupture of the ligamentum patellae, medial collateral, and anterior cruciate ligaments. A case report.

We report a case of simultaneous rupture of the ligamentum patellae, medial collateral, and anterior cruciate ligaments. The full extent of the injury was not recognized on clinical examination. Although this is a rare combination of injuries, the integrity of the extensor mechanism should always be confirmed in knee injuries.

Ruptures of the fibular collateral ligaments of the ankle. Result study of immediate surgical treatment.

A recently published survey from this institution of the results of conservative treatment for severe injuries to the lateral ligaments of the ankle showed relatively disappointing results; only 58.8 per cent of patients were asymptomatic at follow-up. Influenced by this study, we utilized ankle arthrography, aimed at more exact diagnosis, and immediate open repair was done in selected patients (young, serious athletes). Over a two and one-half-year period, twenty-seven patients, an average of 19.7 years old, who had major injuries to the lateral ligaments of the ankle had immediate surgical r

Calcification of the Lateral Collateral Ligament of the Knee: A Case Series.

Calcification of the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) of the knee is a rare cause of lateral knee pain related to hydroxyapatite crystal deposition. We report a case series of four patients presenting with lateral knee pain. Diagnosis was established using imaging. In one case, calcification was first detected on ultrasound and subsequently confirmed on radiography and MRI. In two other cases, calcification was identified on radiography and MRI, with spontaneous radiographic resolution on follow-up in one patient. In the fourth patient, dual-energy CT was additionally performed to exclude gou

The Docking Technique for Medial Ulnar Collateral Ligament Reconstruction.

Medial ulnar collateral ligament injury is common in the elbow following repetitive use in overhead athletes and acute trauma such as a fall on to an outstretched hand. This leads to valgus elbow instability confirmed with provocative testing. In patients with functional limitation and radiographic evidence of a midsubstance or diffuse ulnar collateral ligament tear, reconstruction with tendon graft remains the best option. The docking technique, which consists of hubbing the graft in a humeral socket and securing it over a bone bridge, has become the cornerstone of medial ulnar collateral lig

Capitellum fractures: should the collateral ligament be repaired primarily?

BACKGROUND: It is controversial whether the collateral ligaments should be repaired primarily for capitellum fractures with ligamentous injury. This research was conducted to summarize the current evidence for this issue. METHODS: Databases, including Medline, Cochrane library and EMBASE, were searched from their establishment to December 31, 2024 for clinical articles on capitellum fractures. The reference lists of the relevant studies were also checked successively. The general information including first author, publication time, location, the number of cases, treatment for the capitellum

Arthroscopic Assessment and Treatment of Medial Collateral Ligament Complex.

An increased interest in ankle instability has led to description of new concepts such as ankle microinstability or rotational ankle instability and the development of new arthroscopic techniques treating ankle instability. Ankle instability is constantly associated to intraarticular pathologies that contribute to generate pain and dysfunction. Arthroscopy plays an important role in identifying and treating all intraarticular abnormalities including ligament injuries. Despite a few studies are available in literature on arthroscopic treatment of medial collateral ligament injury, an arthroscop

Ulnar Collateral Ligament Reconstruction in Adolescents: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstruction is an established surgical technique to restore UCL deficiency, especially in the overhead throwing athlete. Over the past decade, the number of patients requiring UCL reconstruction has increased significantly, particularly in the adolescent patient population. Return-to-play rates after UCL reconstruction reported in the literature have ranged from 33% to 92%, and a recent systematic review noted a return-to-play rate of 89.40% in all high school athletes. PURPOSE: To evaluate the outcomes, particularly return-to-play rates and subj

Collateral Ligament Knee Injuries in Pediatric and Adolescent Athletes.

BACKGROUND: The majority of research on medial (MCL) and lateral (LCL) collateral ligament injuries has focused on adults and combined collateral/cruciate injuries. The purpose of this study was to determine characteristics associated with isolated collateral ligament injuries in adolescents, and assess timing for return to sports. METHODS: Electronic medical records were queried to identify patients aged below 17 years who sustained a magnetic resonance imaging-confirmed isolated MCL or LCL injury over an 8-year period. Retrospective review then documented patient and injury characteristics

Isolated medial collateral ligament tears: An update on management.

Tears of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) are the most common knee ligament injury.Incomplete tears (grade I, II) and isolated tears (grade III) of the MCL without valgus instability can be treated without surgery, with early functional rehabilitation.Failure of non-surgical treatment can result in debilitating, persistent medial instability, secondary dysfunction of the anterior cruciate ligament, weakness, and osteoarthritis.Reconstruction or repair of the MCL is a relatively uncommon procedure, as non-surgical treatment is often successful at returning patients to their prior level of f

Medial collateral ligament bursitis in a patient with knee osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Medial collateral ligament (MCL) bursitis has been described as a distended and inflamed bursa between the superficial and deep portions of the MCL. It is a rare but important cause of medial knee pain. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 65-year-old woman with knee osteoarthritis (OA) presented with severe pain and swelling in her left knee. She did not have a traumatic injury. After a clinical examination, a slight decrease in the range of motion of the left knee, and a painful swelling and tenderness over the medial side of the knee and proximal tibia were detected. The pain was exacerbated by
