Inhibitory effects of secretin on gastrin-stimulated rat colon neoplasms.

A study was done to determine if continuous administration of exogenous secretin would inhibit the trophic effect of elevated endogenous gastrin on colon neoplasms in rats. Colon tumors were induced in 37 Fisher rats by subcutaneous injection of 1,2-symdimethylhydrazine, 20 mg/kg, weekly for 18 weeks. Elevation of endogenous gastrin was achieved by antral exclusion surgery. Control rats received a sham operation. Subcutaneous osmotic minipumps delivered 35.5 U/kg/day of secretin for 7 days before the rats were killed. Rats receiving antral exclusion had significantly elevated serum gastrin lev

Histogenesis of symmetrical 1,2-dimethylhydrazine-induced neoplasms of the colon in the mouse.

CF-1 female adult mice were given weekly sc injections of 20 mg symmetrical 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH)-2HCl/kg body weight and killed at various intervals after commencement of the injection. [3H]thymidine (TdR) was given before the animals were killed. The histogenesis of colon neoplasms was investigated by means of autoradiographs prepared from sections of Epon-embedded descending colon, which were stained with periodic acid-Schiff reaction and iron hematoxylin. By 9 weeks after initiation of DMH treatment, the distal 5 cm of the colon became enlarged, the mucosa thickened, and the crypts w

A Rare Case of Synchronous Primary Gallbladder and Sigmoid Colon Neoplasms.

Colorectal cancer is considered the third most common cancer worldwide. On the other hand, gallbladder cancer is rare. Synchronous tumors in both the colon and the gallbladder are extremely infrequent. Herein, we report the case of a female patient with sigmoid colon cancer and incidental detection of synchronous gallbladder cancer on histopathological examination of the surgical specimen. As synchronous gallbladder and colonic carcinomas are rare, physicians should be aware of these so that an optimal course of treatment can be chosen.

Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Sigmoid Colon Masquerading as an Adnexal Neoplasm.

Solitary fibrous tumor is a rare, benign spindle cell neoplasm that was first described in the thoracic pleura. This tumor is now known to occur at many extrapleural sites. There are established criteria for the diagnosis of malignant solitary fibrous tumor including ≥4 mitotic figures per 10 high-power fields, increased cellularity, cytologic atypia, infiltrative margins, and/or necrosis. Although all solitary fibrous tumors have the potential to recur or metastasize, those with malignant histologic features tend to behave more aggressively. We report a case of solitary fibrous tumor, with ma

Mucinous cystic neoplasm in heterotopic pancreas presenting as colonic polyp.

CONTEXT: Pancreatic heterotopia in itself is rare in the colon and to the best of our knowledge a neoplasm arising in a heterotopic tissue in the colon has not been reported. We herein report a pancreatic cystic neoplasm arising from heterotopic pancreatic tissue in colon. CASE REPORT: A 44-year-old lady presented with a history of lower abdominal colic, associated with mucoid loose stools 10-15 times/day. Fecal occult blood was positive on two occasions. On examination, a vague mass was palpable in the left upper quadrant of abdomen. Colonoscopy showed a polypoid growth at the splenic flexur

[Synchronous neoplasms of the colon and kidney: analysis of 2 case reports].

Up until only a few decades ago synchronous renal cell carcinoma associated with primary tumors of other organs was diagnosed almost exclusively in necropsy series. Recently the widespread use of ultrasonography and CT has permitted diagnosis of clinically silent renal cell carcinoma in patients undergoing a work-up for other primary tumors. We report two cases of synchronous colon and renal cancer: 1) a 75 year old woman presented bilateral pulmonary nodules at chest X-Ray and stratigraphy. Total-body CT scan showed multiple, apparently metastatic, bilateral pulmonary lesions and two tumors i

Diverticular fecalith in scleroderma simulating colonic neoplasm: report of a case.

This is a report of a patient with the CRST syndrome, a mild variant of scleroderma consisting of calcinosismraynaud's phenomenon, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasia. Typical changes of scleroderma were present in the extremities, esophagus, duodenum and colon. In addition, there was a polypoid filling defect in a colonic diverticulum due to a fecalith. The radiologic appearance at first resembled a colonic neoplasm, although its location within a diverticulum and its speckled appearance suggested the possibility of a fecalith. This was confirmed at colonoscopy, which disclosed numerous wide-mo

Immunophenotypic Comparison of Neoplasms of the Appendix, Right Colon, and Left Colon in Search of a Site-Specific Phenotypic Signature.

Aims. The proximal colon derives from the midgut endoderm, the distal one third derives from the hindgut endoderm, and the distal anal canal is of ectodermal origin. At least 5 molecular subtypes of colorectal carcinomas (CRC) have been identified, and some have a marked preferential right-sided location. Histologically, some CRC are much more common in the appendix. We hypothesized that these findings suggest the existence of diverse molecular genetic colonic subregions and compared the expression of classic and recently discovered colorectal markers in tumors at various locations to determin

State-of-the-art surgery for Crohn's disease: Part II-colonic Crohn's disease and associated neoplasms.

Despite advances in medical therapy, surgery continues to play a vital role in the management of Crohn's disease and its complications. Continuing from Part I of this series (small intestine/ileal disease), we focus next on colonic Crohn's disease and associated neoplasms. We will first review the surgical management of medical-refractory Crohn's colitis and its complications and then examine cancer risk, surveillance, and surgical management of Crohn's-associated colorectal dysplasia and malignancy. We conclude with a discussion of restoration of gastrointestinal continuity following colonic

The impact of colonoscopy on the early detection of colonic neoplasms in patients with rectal bleeding.

A retrospective analysis was made of 372 consecutive patients who underwent colonoscopy because of rectal bleeding. The three distinct patterns of bleeding studied were chronic (224 cases), recent major (93 cases), and acute bleeders (55 cases). In 50% of the cases, colonoscopy detected a lesion other than diverticula. These lesions consisted of several forms of colitis, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), ulcers, and most importantly, neoplasms in 34% of the cases. In 13% of the cases, an invasive neoplasm was detected and 76% of them were early stage (Dukes A or B). A third of the neoplasms

Autofluorescence imaging and the quantitative intensity of fluorescence for evaluating the dysplastic grade of colonic neoplasms.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Autofluorescence imaging (AFI) is a novel technology which can capture fluorescence emitted from intestinal tissues. While AFI is useful for detecting colorectal neoplasms, it is unclear whether AFI can facilitate the diagnosis by differentiating the extent of dysplasia of colorectal neoplasms. This study investigated the efficacy of AFI in discriminating high-grade from low-grade adenoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-seven patients who underwent colonoscopy with AFI were enrolled in this study. The AFI images obtained from 158 lesions in these patients were visually clas

Highly aggressive neuroendocrine neoplasm of the ascending colon: a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms represent a broad group of uncommon tumours, comprising neuroendocrine tumours, mixed neuroendocrine non-endocrine neoplasms and neuroendocrine carcinomas. While most neuroendocrine neoplasms are well differentiated and exhibit indolent disease biology with excellent treatment response, neuroendocrine carcinomas represent a rare subtype with much more aggressive tumour behaviour, minimal response to adjuvant therapy and extremely poor prognosis. Herein, we report the case of a 47-year-old man who presented with a phlegmonous ascending colonic mass and associated calcif

Mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasms of ascending colon: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Neuroendocrine tumor (NET) that develops in the right-sided colon is relatively rare. Coexistence of adenocarcinoma and NET is extremely rare, and such cases are called mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasm (MiNEN). PRESENTATION OF CASE: Colonoscopy in an 85-year-old woman for an anemia examination indicated laterally spreading tumor-nongranular (LST-NG) in the transverse colon. Colonoscopy and endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) showed that the depth of the tumor invasion was deep submucosal. The tumor localization was diagnosed as transverse colon close to the hepatic

Postrenal Transplant Metastatic Colonic Neoplasm: Posttransplant Lymphoproliferative Disorder or Adenocarcinoma?

Transplant recipients are vulnerable to a horde of infections and neoplastic conditions due to immunosuppression. Posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is a condition unique to the transplant recipient occurring due to monoclonal lymphocytic proliferation. It may affect any organ system with reportedly highest incidence in the gastrointestinal tract. The incidence of adenocarcinoma of the colon, however, has not been shown to be uniformly higher in transplant recipients. We report here an unusual case of adenocarcinoma of the ascending colon presenting with liver, lymph node and s

Colonic-type adenocarcinoma of the base of the tongue: a case report of a rare neoplasm.

Lingual adenocarcinomas (ADC), either primary or metastatic to the tongue are extraordinarily rare neoplasms. Primary lingual adenocarcinomas are primarily of minor salivary gland origin. Two cases of primary colonic-type adenocarcinomas of the base of the tongue were recently reported for the first time in the English literature. We present an additional case of lingual intestinal-type adenocarcinoma with mucinous features that occurred in association with cervical node metastasis and discuss the clinicopathologic features and histogenetic aspects of this rare entity.

Leiomyosarcoma of the colon: a second malignant neoplasm after treatment for a Wilms' tumor.

Leiomyosarcoma of the colon is a rare malignancy. We report the case of a 33-year-old woman with a leiomyosarcoma of the colon occurring as an intussusception 30 years after receiving abdominal irradiation for a Wilms' tumor. A review of the prior and current treatment for Wilms' tumor is discussed, as well as the association between second malignancies and abdominal irradiation. Leiomyosarcoma of the colon usually presents in the fifth and sixth decades of life and is more common in men. The most common symptom is pain. Ninety per cent are diagnosed at surgery for treatment of bleeding, perfo
