The ecology of Colorado tick fever in Rocky Mountain National Park in 1974. III. Habitats supporting the virus.

Ecologic studies of small mammals in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) were conducted in 1974 in order to identify the specific habitats within the Lower Montane Forest that support Colorado tick fever (CTF) virus. Data was collected on the abundance and distribution of 4 primary rodent species, tick infestation, CTF virus, and neutralizing antibody prevalence. Rodents were captured along transects crossing different habitats. Open stands of ponderosa pine and shrubs on dry, rocky surfaces were found to be important for maintaining CTF virus.

Recombinant VP7-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for detection of immunoglobulin G antibodies to Colorado tick fever virus.

VP6, VP7, VP9, VP10, VP11, and VP12 of Colorado tick fever virus (CTF virus), a virus member of the genus Coltivirus, family Reoviridae, were expressed in bacteria with the pGEX-4T-2 vector. A partial sequence of VP7 (designated pVP7) was chosen to elaborate an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detecting anti-CTF virus immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies in humans. This was based on two observations: (i) among all expressed proteins, pVP7 showed the highest immunoreactivity to an anti-CTF virus hyperimmune ascitic fluid; (ii) to provide the highest selectivity of antibody detection,

Increase in Colorado Tick Fever Virus Disease Cases and Effect of COVID-19 Pandemic on Behaviors and Testing Practices, Montana, 2020.

In 2020, Montana, USA, reported a large increase in Colorado tick fever (CTF) cases. To investigate potential causes of the increase, we conducted a case-control study of Montana residents who tested positive or negative for CTF during 2020, assessed healthcare providers' CTF awareness and testing practices, and reviewed CTF testing methods. Case-patients reported more time recreating outdoors on weekends, and all reported finding a tick on themselves before illness. No consistent changes were identified in provider practices. Previously, only CTF serologic testing was used in Montana. In 2020

Genomic Evaluation of the Genus Coltivirus Indicates Genetic Diversity among Colorado Tick Fever Virus Strains and Demarcation of a New Species.

The type species of the genus Coltivirus, Colorado tick fever virus (CTFV), was discovered in 1943 and is the most common tick-borne viral infection in the Western US. Despite its long history, very little is known about the molecular diversity of viruses classified within the species Colorado tick fever coltivirus. Previous studies have suggested genetic variants and potential serotypes of CTFV, but limited genetic sequence information is available for CTFV strains. To address this knowledge gap, we report herein the full-length genomes of five strains of CTFV, including Salmon River virus an

Sequence determination and analysis of the full-length genome of colorado tick fever virus, the type species of genus Coltivirus (Family Reoviridae).

The Colorado tick fever virus (CTFV) is the type species of genus Coltivirus, family Reoviridae. Its genome consisting of 12 segments of dsRNA was completely sequenced. It was found to be 29,174 nucleotides long (the longest of all Reoviridae genomes characterized to date). Conserved sequences at the 5' end (SACUUUUGY) and at the 3' end (WUGCAGUS) of the 12 segments were identified. The analysis of the putative proteins deduced from the nucleotide sequences permitted to identify functional motifs. In particular, the VP1 was identified unambiguously as the viral RNA dependent RNA pylmerase (RDR

Case Report: A Case of Colorado Tick Fever Acquired in Southwestern Saskatchewan.

Colorado tick fever virus is transmitted by Dermacentor andersoni ticks. In Canada, these ticks are found in the southern regions of British Columbia (Rocky Mountains) and Alberta, as well as southwestern Saskatchewan. Colorado tick fever should be clinically suspected in patients presenting with a biphasic febrile illness and leukopenia following tick exposure in the appropriate geographic area.

Dermatological manifestations of tick-borne viral infections found in the United States.

Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) are bacterial, viral, and parasitic diseases transmitted by ticks. Viral TBDs have increased in prevalence over the last decade with many new pathogenic viruses being discovered. Doxycycline is often empirically prescribed by clinicians to treat symptomatic patients following tick bites due to suspicions of bacterial TBDs such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis. However, viral TBDs are included in the differential diagnosis if patients do not clinically improve following antibiotic therapy. Several viral TBDs present with dermatological m

Tick-borne diseases in the United States: Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Colorado tick fever. A review.

The historical, clinical, ecological, and epidemiological features of Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Colorado tick fever, the two important tick-borne diseases in the United States, are reviewed. Rocky Mountain spotted fever, once considered a disease of the past, has again become a measurable public health problem. Its nationwide incidence has steadily increased since 1960 and has reached record proportions in 1976. The various factors responsible for this trend as well as for the mortality rates, which in spite of availability of effective antibiotics ranges from 5 to 10%, are discussed. E

Colorado tick fever: clinical, epidemiologic, and laboratory aspects of 228 cases in Colorado in 1973-1974.

During 1973 and 1974, we looked for cases of Colorado tick fever throughout Colorado; 228 cases were identified. Although 90% of the patients reported exposure to ticks before illness, only 52% were aware of an actual tick bite. Typical symptoms of fever, myalgia, and headache were common, but gastrointestinal symptoms were also prominent in 20% of the patients. Twenty percent were hospitalized; no deaths or permanent sequelae were noted. Persistent viremia (greater than or equal to 4 weeks) was found in about half of the cases; this finding was not associated with the occurrence of prolonged

Geographical distribution and pathogenesis of ticks and tick-borne viral diseases.

Ticks are obligatory hematophagous arthropods that harbor and transmit infectious pathogens to humans and animals. Tick species belonging to Amblyomma, Ixodes, Dermacentor, and Hyalomma genera may transmit certain viruses such as Bourbon virus (BRBV), Dhori virus (DHOV), Powassan virus (POWV), Omsk hemorrhagic fever virus (OHFV), Colorado tick fever virus (CTFV), Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), Heartland virus (HRTV), Kyasanur forest disease virus (KFDV), etc. that affect humans and certain wildlife. The tick vectors may become infected through feeding on viraemic hosts before t

An overview of Colorado tick fever.

Certain features of Colorado tick fever (CTF) virus and the disease it causes may be relevant to studies on bluetongue virus (BTV), or other orbiviruses. Rapid and easy detection of viral antigen in infected tissues and peripheral blood cells by immunofluorescence staining facilitate diagnosis of the disease. The prolonged (3-4 months) viremia is due to persistent intracellular infection, particularly of erythrocytes, in which the virus is protected from antibody or other host defense mechanisms. This results in more efficient maintenance of the virus cycle in nature, but might lead to adverse

The ecology of Colorado tick fever in Rocky Mountain National Park in 1974. II. Infection in small mammals.

Field studies of Colorado tick fever (CTF) in small mammals in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) in 1974 established that Eutamias minimus and Spermophilus lateralis were the most important hosts for CTF virus and were the source of virus for immature stages of the tick vector, Dermacentor andersoni. Other species (Peromyscus maniculatus, Spermophilus richardsonii, Eutamias umbrinus) are secondary hosts. The intensity of viral activity in rodents varied greatly from locality to locality. Highest rodent infection rates were found to occur in the Moraine Park area of RMNP. Lowest infection rat

Colorado tick fever.

Colorado tick fever, also known as mountain fever and mountain tick fever, is a well-described, viral, tick-borne disease common to the Rocky Mountain region of the United States and Canada. The Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni, is the primary vector. The triad of high fever, severe myalgia, and headache is typical, but not specific. Although a self-limited disease in most cases, severe complications may occur. PCR techniques have been developed that allow the diagnosis to be established from the first day of symptoms. Ribavirin may merit consideration in the appropriate clinica
