Colorectal neoplasm detection using virtual colonoscopy: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Virtual colonoscopy is a potentially powerful tool for non-invasive colorectal evaluation. In vitro studies have established its accuracy in simulated polyp detection but little data exist regarding its use in clinical practice. AIMS: To evaluate the ability of virtual colonoscopy to detect colorectal cancers and polyps in patients with endoscopically proven colorectal neoplasms and to correlate the findings of virtual colonoscopy with those of conventional colonoscopy, surgery, and histopathology. PATIENTS: Thirty eight patients with endoscopic findings suggestive of colorectal

Multiple colorectal neoplasms in a young adult with hypogammaglobulinemia. Report of a case.

We report on a 22-year-old man with congenital hypogammaglobulinemia who developed multiple colorectal neoplasms. An immunodeficiency had been diagnosed in the patient since two years of age, and this time many tumors of the sigmoid colon and rectum were detected by barium enema and fiberscopy. Abdominoperineal resection was performed, and the resected specimen revealed 29 polyps, including 9 adenocarcinomas and 20 adenomas. The carcinomas, measuring 0.8 to 11.0 cm in size, showed various depths of invasion, and the adenomas, measuring 0.2 to 1.5 cm in size, showed various degrees of epithelia

[Endoscopic tattooing of colorectal neoplasms and laparoscopic surgery: technical aspects and recommendations].

Accurate mapping of colorectal neoplasms is needed in many clinical situations. Intraoperative mapping of small lesions previously detected by endoscopy is often challenging, especially during laparoscopic surgery. Tumor location assessed during colonoscopy may be inaccurate because of limitations of the procedure. Small flat neoplasms with signs of invasiveness, which are hard to detect by palpation, hold a special place. The same situation is observed for nonradical endoscopic resection of malignant polyps or early cancer, when visual examination shows that the tumor masses have been complet

Suboptimal Bowel Preparation Significantly Impairs Colonoscopic Detection of Non-polypoid Colorectal Neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether the quality of bowel preparation affects colonoscopic detection of non-polypoid colorectal neoplasms (NP-CRNs). AIM: To evaluate the impact of bowel-cleansing quality on detection of NP-CRNs. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of asymptomatic screening colonoscopy cases after standardized bowel preparation at an academic teaching hospital between June 2011 and May 2013. Primary outcome was a comparison of the adenoma detection rate (ADR) of non-polypoid morphology according to quality of bowel preparation. Secondary outcomes included detection pr

Different lymph node staging systems for predicting the prognosis of colorectal neuroendocrine neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are a rare malignancy that primarily arises from the diffuse distribution of neuroendocrine cells in the colon and rectum. Previous studies have pointed out that the status of lymph node may be used to predict the prognosis. AIM: To investigate the predictive values of lymph node ratio (LNR), positive lymph node (PLN), and log odds of PLNs (LODDS) staging systems on the prognosis of colorectal NENs treated surgically, and compare their predictive values. METHODS: This cohort study included 895 patients with colorectal NENs treated surgic

Prostate cancer patients may have an increased risk of coexisting advanced colorectal neoplasms.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Patients being treated for prostate cancer (PCa) have an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer. However, whether PCa patients are inherently at a higher risk of colorectal neoplasms (CRNs) is unknown. We aimed to investigate the risk of CRNs in PCa patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who had been diagnosed with PCa at a tertiary medical center and had colonoscopy within 1 year of the PCa diagnosis were investigated. Patients were propensity-matched 1:2 by age and body mass index to asymptomatic control subjects who had undergone colonoscopy for routine health s

Protection from right- and left-sided colorectal neoplasms after colonoscopy: population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Colonoscopy is used for early detection and prevention of colorectal cancer, but evidence on the magnitude of overall protection and protection according to anatomical site through colonoscopy performed in the community setting is sparse. We assessed whether receiving a colonoscopy in the preceding 10-year period, compared with no colonoscopy, was associated with prevalence of advanced colorectal neoplasms (defined as cancers or advanced adenomas) at various anatomical sites. METHODS: A statewide cross-sectional study was conducted among 3287 participants in screening colonoscopy

Modifiable lifestyle factors have a larger contribution to colorectal neoplasms than family history.

BACKGROUND: Screening recommendations for colorectal cancer (CRC) are mainly based on family history rather than lifestyle risk factors. We aimed to assess and compare risk factors for colorectal neoplasm (CRN) and evaluate trends in neoplasm detection rates during the three rounds of screening from 2012 to 2020 in Tianjin, China. METHODS: This study was based on 89,535 first-recorded colonoscopies in Tianjin CRC screening program, 2012-2020. Of these, 45,380 individuals with complete family history and lifestyle factors were included for population attributable fraction (PAF) estimation. RE

Fiberoptic sigmoidoscopy as the first screening procedure for colorectal neoplasms in an asymptomatic population.

As the first screening for colorectal neoplasms, a total of 2243 examinations by fiberoptic sigmoidoscopy (FS) were performed on 1573 asymptomatic patients. One hundred seventy neoplasms were found in 134 patients (6 percent of total examinations), including nine adenocarcinomas (0.4 percent). A flat, intramucosal cancer and a small, 5-mm cancer detected by FS could not be demonstrated by barium enema examination. On further investigation, additional adenomas were identified in the proximal colon in 22 percent of patients in whom neoplasms had first been detected by FS and in only 4.4 percent
