West Nile virus detection in nonvascular feathers from avian carcasses.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a public health threat and has caused the death of thousands of North American birds. As such, surveillance for WNV has been ongoing, utilizing numerous biological specimens and testing methods. Nonvascular (i.e., fully grown) feathers would provide a simple method of collection from either dead or live birds of all ages and molt cycles, with presumably less biosafety risk compared with other specimen types, including feather pulp. The current study evaluates WNV detection in nonvascular feathers removed from naturally infected avian carcasses of several species groups

Ecological drivers of arboviral disease risk: Vector-host interfaces in a Mediterranean wetland of Northeastern Spain.

The rising incidence of arboviral diseases poses a public health challenge worldwide. However, local-scale interactions among vectors, hosts, and the environment remain poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed historical, multi-source data to assess pathogen transmission risk in a Mediterranean wetland of Northeastern Spain, examining mosquito vectors, avian hosts for West Nile virus (WNV), and human hosts for dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. Mosquito activity peaked between June and October. Aedes albopictus was predominant in urban areas, whereas Culex species were more prevalent in rural

Detection and molecular status of Isospora sp. from the domestic pigeon (Columba livia domestica).

The domestic pigeon, Columba livia domestica, is reared for meat production, as a pet, or for racing. Few reports have characterized the parasitic protists from the genus Isospora isolated from Columbiformes. We detected Isospora-like oocysts from C. livia reared for racing. The oocyst contained two sporocysts, and each sporocyst included four sporozoites. The sporulated oocysts (n=4) were spherical; their mean diameters were 25.6 (24.0-27.2)×24.7 (23.4-26.0) μm. Micropyles, polar granules, and oocyst residuum were absent. The mean length and width of the sporocysts (n=8) were 19.5 (18.5-20.5)

Renal trematode infection in wild birds: histopathological, morphological, and molecular aspects.

Paratanaisia are eucotylidae digeneans that affect the upper urinary tract of birds. This genus contains three species (Paratanaisia bragai, P. robusta, and P. confusa) with similar morphological features. Macroscopic and microscopic damage caused by these parasites ranges from the irrelevant to significant lesions. This study aimed to describe the histological, morphological, and molecular features of the renal tissues and parasite specimens obtained from naturally infected free-ranging and captive wild birds in Brazil. Histopathological evaluations were performed on 103 slides containing kid

Racing pigeons: a reservoir for nitro-imidazole-resistant Trichomonas gallinae.

Trichomonas gallinae , the cause of avian trichomonosis, is most commonly found in the order Columbiformes. Racing pigeons are often treated preventively with nitro-imidazoles, which could result in the emergence of resistant isolates, and these isolates can be a threat to wildlife when exchanges occur. The sequence type of 16 T. gallinae isolates obtained from racing pigeons and 15 isolates from wild pigeons was determined based on the ITS1/5.8S rRNA/ITS2 region sequence. In addition, the resistance profiles of these isolates against 5 different nitro-imidazoles (metronidazole, dimetridazole,

A new Haemoproteus species (Haemosporida: Haemoproteidae) from the endemic Galapagos dove Zenaida galapagoensis, with remarks on the parasite distribution, vectors, and molecular diagnostics.

Haemoproteus (Haemoproteus) multipigmentatus n. sp. (Haemosporida, Haemoproteidae) was found in the endemic Galapagos dove Zenaida galapagoensis . It is described based on the morphology of its blood stages and segments of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene, which can be used for molecular identification and diagnosis of this species. Haemoproteus multipigmentatus can be readily distinguished from all species of hemoproteids of the subgenus Haemoproteus , primarily due to numerous (approximately 40 on average) small pigment granules in its mature gametocytes. Molecular Survey of Chlamydial Infections in Three Public Bird Collections in Tehran, Iran.

BACKGROUND: Avian Chlamydia spp. are capable of infecting different avian species and potentially cause the loss of valuable birds in rehabilitation facilities and zoos. They also pose a potential zoonotic risk to visitors and workers at such centres. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the occurrence of chlamydia in two different public aviaries and a rehabilitation centre. METHOD: One hundred and eight samples from 48 different avian species belonging to 11 different orders were collected. These samples were tested for chlamydia infection by detecting the Chlamydia 16s rRNA gene using p

Neurotropism of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus A/chicken/Indonesia/2003 (H5N1) in experimentally infected pigeons (Columbia livia f. domestica).

This investigation assessed the susceptibility of experimentally infected pigeons to the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) H5N1 that caused recent outbreaks of avian influenza in birds and humans in several countries of Asia. For this purpose 14 pigeons were infected ocularly and nasally with 10(8) EID50 and clinical signs were recorded and compared with five chickens infected simultaneously as positive controls. The chickens demonstrated anorexia, depression, and 100% mortality within 2 days postinoculation. Three of the pigeons died after a history of depression and severe neur

No host too tough: New records of Plasmodium huffi in competent avian hosts, including Brazilian vultures and falcons.

Plasmodium huffi was first described in toucans of Brazil and was mistakenly believed to be a species exclusive to the order Piciformes. However, subsequent molecular and morphological studies conducted in red-legged seriemas, along with the diverse range of lineages identified in Anseriformes, Charadriiformes, Cathartiformes, Columbiformes, Galliformes, Pelecaniformes, Struthioniformes, Psittaciformes, and Passeriformes, have revealed that this parasite is, in fact, a generalist. Here, we provide new molecular and morphological data on P. huffi infecting previously unreported avian hosts in B

Occurrence and Genetic Diversity of Trichomonas gallinae in Captive Synanthropic Birds in Southeastern Brazil.

Avian trichomonosis is caused by protozoa of the genus Trichomonas, mainly Trichomonas gallinae, which infects the upper digestive tract of birds and is commonly associated with Columbiformes, the main reservoirs of the parasite. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence and genetic diversity of Trichomonas spp. in captive synanthropic birds from southeastern Brazil. Oropharyngeal swabs were collected from 281 birds belonging to 13 avian orders and analyzed using Diamond medium culture, Giemsa-stained smears, and molecular assays. Of the 262 samples submitted to culture analysis, 72 (27.4

Review of Genetic Information of Morphologically Described Haemoproteus Parasites Recorded in GenBank and MalAvi Databases.

Haemoproteus Kruse, 1890 (Haemosporida: Haemoproteiidae) parasites are known for their high genetic diversity, avian host-specificity, and wide geographical distribution. Currently, 2019 lineages are registered as Haemoproteus species, but only 160 of them have been linked to morphospecies. Two main open access and independent databases are used to compile genetic, geographical, and host information on Haemoproteus parasites: GenBank and MalAvi. However, the data registered are not integrated, representing an obstacle in investigating Haemoproteus parasites. Here, we review all reported avian

Retrospective Evaluation of Clinical Signs and Gross Pathologic Findings in Birds Infected With Mycobacterium genavense.

Mycobacterium genavense is regarded as the primary cause of mycobacteriosis in passerine and psittacine birds kept in captivity. Mycobacterium genavense is a potential zoonotic pathogen; therefore, early antemortem detection in birds is needed. In humans, infections with M genavense are found predominantly in immunocompromised people. To investigate clinical signs and pathologic lesions and to determine the prevalence of coinfections in birds infected with M genavense, we reviewed records of 83 birds in which DNA from M genavense had been detected via real-time polymerase chain reaction. Identification of gastrointestinal parasites in wild birds seized during integrated preventive inspections, Bahia, Brazil.

Brazil stands out as the country with the most remarkable biological diversity in the world, underscoring the need for more effective public policies to conserve the environment and combat wildlife trafficking. Trafficked animals, often kept in captivity, are usually maintained under unsanitary conditions, favoring the development of diseases caused by gastrointestinal parasites. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify the primary endoparasites found in wild birds seized during trafficking operations as part of Integrated Preventive Inspections (IPIs) in the state of Bahia, Brazil. Pathophysiological responses to a schistosome infection in a wild population of mourning doves (Zenaida macroura).

The blood trematode Gigantobilharzia huronensis typically infects passerine birds and has not been reported in other orders of wild birds. However, in the summer of 2011 in Tempe, Arizona, USA, mourning doves (Zenaida macroura; order: Columbiformes) were collected with infections of G. huronensis. This is the first report of a natural schistosome infection found in wild populations of doves. We sought to determine if G. huronensis infections alter the general body condition and physiology of doves, a seemingly unlikely host for this parasite. Specifically, we hypothesized that birds infected w

Review of 23 cases of postintubation tracheal obstructions in birds.

Although recognized as a potential complication after endotracheal intubation in birds, the complication rate of postintubation tracheal obstruction in this taxon is unknown. Twenty-three cases of postintubation obstruction in birds from two institutions are reported. Clinical signs were noted an average of 16.6 days postintubation and consisted primarily of indications of acute respiratory distress. Diagnosis was confirmed via tracheoscopy or radiology. Five birds died before treatment could be initiated. Medical treatment alone was successful in three birds that had mild changes consisting p

Genetically different clonal isolates of Trichomonas gallinae, obtained from the same bird, can vary in their drug susceptibility, an in vitro evidence.

Trichomonas gallinae is a flagellated protozoon which parasitizes in the upper digestive tract of different birds, especially columbiformes (doves and pigeons) and falconiformes. The parasite is also a common inhabitant of the crop of psittacine birds and is frequently detected in budgerigars. The lesions associated with T. gallinae infection of the upper digestive tract range from mild inflammation of the mucosa to large caseous lesions that block the lumen of the oesophagus. Nitroimidazoles are considered to be the drugs of choice for the treatment of trichomonosis. However, only a few studi
