Commiphora molmol resin attenuates diethylnitrosamine/phenobarbital-induced hepatocarcinogenesis by modulating oxidative stress, inflammation, angiogenesis and Nrf2/ARE/HO-1 signaling.

The objective of the current study was to investigate the possible chemopreventive activity of Commiphora molmol resin (myrrh) extract using a rat model of diethylnitrosamine (DEN)/phenobarbital (PB)-induced early stage hepatocarcinogenesis. Here, we pointed to the modulatory effect of myrrh on oxidative stress, angiogenesis, inflammation and nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2). Hepatocarcinogenesis was induced in Wistar rats using DEN for initiation and PB as a promoting agent. The rats received 125 or 250 mg/kg C. molmol resin extract throughout the experiment. Both doses of m

The effects of myrrh (Commiphora molmol) on the infected snails of Schistosoma sp. and their egg masses: effect on shedding of cercariae and on snail fecundity.

Myrrh has molluscicidal effect on infected Bulinus truncatus and Biomphalaria alexandrina snails at low concentrations (10 & 20 ppm respectively) after 24 hours exposure. The number of dead-snails increased with prolongation of exposure time. All Schistosoma free cercariae were killed by 2.5 ppm within 15 minutes. One day-old egg masses were more susceptible to the ovicidal effect of Myrrh than the five-day old ones. Both types of eggs were more resistant to the effect of Myrrh than the adult snails, embryogenesis began to stop at 20 ppm and eggs were all killed at 60 & 80 ppm. Shedding of cer

Commiphora myrrha stimulates insulin secretion from β-cells through activation of atypical protein kinase C and mitogen-activated protein kinase.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Ayurvedic medicine has been used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus for centuries. In Arabia and some areas of Africa, Commiphora myrrha (CM) has been extensively used as a plant-based remedy. We have previously shown that an aqueous CM resin solution directly stimulates insulin secretion from MIN6 cells, a mouse β-cell line, and isolated mouse and human islets. However, the signaling pathways involved in CM-induced insulin secretion are completely unknown. Insulin secretion is normally triggered by elevations in intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) through voltage g

Myrrh: medical marvel or myth of the Magi?

Since antiquity, the genus Commiphora is composed of more than 200 species, and has been exploited as a natural drug to treat pain, skin infections, inflammatory conditions, diarrhea, and periodontal diseases. In more recent history, products derived from Commiphora myrrha and various other species of Commiphora are becoming recognized to possess significant antiseptic, anesthetic, and antitumor properties. Traditional practice and evidence-based research have supported that these properties are directly attributable to terpenoids (especially furanosesquiterpenes), the active compounds present
