Effect of inhaling heated vapor on symptoms of the common cold.

OBJECTIVE: To test the efficacy of steam inhalation in treating common cold symptoms. DESIGN: An in vitro study determined the temperature that inactivated rhinovirus: a temperature of 43 degrees C lasting at least 1 hour was needed. We then conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized in vivo study. SETTING: The virology laboratory and the outpatient department of the Cleveland (Ohio) Clinic Foundation. PATIENTS: Sixty-eight Cleveland Clinic employee volunteers with symptoms of the common cold at the time of enrollment. INTERVENTION: A single 60-minute treatment was given to t

Effect of inhaling heated vapor on symptoms of the common cold.

A double-blind, randomized study tested the efficacy of steam (technically, heated, humidified air) inhalation in the treatment of common cold symptoms. Two 20-minute treatments spaced 60 to 90 minutes apart were given at the time of enrollment. The active device (Rhinotherm, Netzer-Sereni, Beer Yaacov, Israel) delivered 40 L/min of saturated air at 40 degrees C to 42 degrees C, while the identical-appearing placebo delivered 2 L/min of ambient air at 20 degrees C to 24 degrees C. There were 34 patients in the placebo group and 32 in the active group. Significant improvements in the placebo-tr

Symptom profile of common colds in school-aged children.

BACKGROUND: Signs and symptoms of a common cold reported in young children are those perceived by caretakers. Objective signs include cough, fever, and sneezing. Subjective symptoms include nasal congestion, feverishness, headache, and sore throat. School-aged children may provide a more accurate picture of the symptom profile during colds because they can self-report. METHODS: Using preprinted diary sheets listing common signs and symptoms, diaries were kept for school-aged children for 10 days after onset of a cold. Nasopharyngeal aspirates were analyzed for respiratory viruses and potentia

Ineffectiveness of oral terfenadine in natural colds: evidence against histamine as a mediator of common cold symptoms.

The role of histamine in the pathogenesis of infectious rhinitis is unclear, as is the efficacy of antihistaminic drugs in the treatment of the common cold. This study evaluated the short-term efficacy of oral terfenadine (Seldane) in the treatment of the common cold. Over a 5-week period, the authors recruited 250 adults who had developed cold symptoms within 6 to 48 hours prior to enrollment. Volunteers had a primary complaint of runny or stuffy nose; at least one other respiratory symptom; no fever or exudative pharyngitis; and no history of atopy, sinusitis, or use of cold preparations wit

Common cold decreases lung function in infants with recurrent wheezing.

BACKGROUND: Common acute viral respiratory infections (colds) are the most frequent cause of exacerbations in infants with recurrent wheezing (RW). However, there is no quantitative information about the effect of colds on the lung function of infants with RW. This study was undertaken to determine the effect of common cold on forced expiratory parameters measured from raised lung volume in infants with RW. METHODS: Spirometric lung function (expiratory flows from raised lung volume) was randomly assessed in 28 infants with RW while they had a common cold and when asymptomatic. RESULTS: It w

The therapeutic effectiveness of ibuprofen on the symptoms of naturally acquired common colds.

The pathogenesis of the common cold is associated with inflammation of the nasal mucous membrane with polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs)(1,2) and increased levels of inflammatory cytokines and mediators in nasal secretions.(3,4) We have investigated the effect of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) ibuprofen, 400 mg three times daily, in a placebo-controlled trial of 80 adults with naturally occurring common colds. Ibuprofen caused a significant reduction of headache (p = 0.008), earache (p = 0.01), muscle/joint pain (p = 0.045), and reduced body temperature (p = 0.02). There was a 40% r

Effects of pseudoephedrine and triprolidine, alone and in combination, on symptoms of the common cold.

A total of 466 healthy adults from four different regions of England entered a double-blind, randomised trial to test the effectiveness of an antihistamine (triprolidine) and a decongestant (pseudoephedrine), alone or in combination, in relieving symptoms of the common cold. During the study 199 subjects reported a total of 243 colds. Subjects recorded the severity of 12 symptoms during treatment and noted separately the severity of a further seven symptoms that represented unwanted effects of treatment or served as an index of suggestibility. They were then asked about their overall improveme

Witnessing Community Violence in Youth and Susceptibility to the Common Cold in Adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: The current study investigated the relationship between witnessing community violence in youth and susceptibility to the common cold in adulthood, using Common Cold Project data. METHODS: Two hundred twelve adults (42% female, aged 18 to 55) recalled witnessing community violence in youth (ages 5, 10, 15) retrospectively, completed other demographic and psychosocial measures, and were then subsequently exposed to a virus that causes the common cold. After exposure, if participants displayed both infection and signs of illness, they were diagnosed with the common cold. RESULTS: Mul

Pharmacology of chlorphenamine and pseudoephedrine use in the common cold: a narrative review.

The common cold is the most frequent upper respiratory viral infection. Although benign, it represents a high socioeconomic burden. Many over-the-counter drugs are available to manage the symptoms of this condition, with antihistamines and vasoconstrictors being the most widely used. This review aimed to compare the potential mechanisms underlying the efficacy and safety of chlorphenamine and pseudoephedrine, the most commonly used agents in these two classes of drugs, and provide a useful perspective to impact appropriate decisions when considering these options for symptomatic common cold tr

Treatment of naturally acquired common colds with zinc: a structured review.

BACKGROUND: Over the past 20 years, the use of zinc as an over-the-counter alternative therapy for the common cold has vastly grown in popularity. Recent reports of potentially permanent anosmia caused by intranasal zinc therapy warrant careful analysis of the therapeutic effects of zinc. METHODS: A search of the Medline database (including articles published during 1966-2006) for studies of zinc and the common cold produced 105 published reports. Fourteen were randomized, placebo-controlled studies that examined the effect of zinc lozenges, nasal sprays, or nasal gels on naturally acquired c

"Gesundheit!" sneezing, common colds, allergies, and Staphylococcus aureus dispersion.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus is among the most important pathogens in today's hospital setting. METHODS: The effects of sneezing on the airborne dispersal of S. aureus and other bacteria were assessed in 11 healthy nasal S. aureus carriers with experimentally induced rhinovirus colds. Airborne dispersal was studied by volumetric air sampling in 2 chamber sessions with and without histamine-induced sneezing. After 2 days of preexposure measurements, volunteers were inoculated with a rhinovirus and monitored for 14 days. Daily quantitative nasal- and skin-culture samples for bacteria and n

Assessment of the antitussive efficacy of codeine in cough associated with common cold.

Codeine is generally accepted as the standard antitussive against which new antitussive medications are compared. This presents a problem because the support for codeine's antitussive activity comes from studies on cough in animals, and chronic and induced cough models in man, whereas antitussives are almost exclusively used for the treatment of cough associated with acute upper respiratory tract infection (URTI). The aims of this study were twofold. Firstly, to study the antitussive efficacy of codeine in cough associated with URTI and, secondly, to validate a sound meter as tool for quantify

The perception of the common cold, and other ailments and discomforts, as related to age.

Perception of the common cold and other discomforts was studied as a function fo age among 456 normals ranging in age from 18 to 82. Respondents completed a questionnaire which deal with the frequency and duration of their colds, their symptoms and treatments-and, finally, with the perceived severity of various discomforts. Though older Rs were found to suffer more than younger with body aches, the former had less difficulty with a variety of other physical and psychological symptoms-and also contracted relatively few colds. Older Rs treated their colds less often with Contac and Dristan, but

[Rhinitis, sore throate and otalgia... Benign common cold or dangerous infection?].

One of mankind's most common illnesses is rhinitis, which almost regularly leads to involvement of the paranasal sinuses. Acute sinusitis is a consequence of a viral infection which, by damaging the mucosa, opens the door to bacterial superinfection. The aim of treatment is to cure the acute inflammation, re-establish normal drainage and ventilation, and prevent the development of "rhinosinugenic" complications. Acute otitis media is also preceded by viral damage to the mucosa. In children, acute otitis media is favored by the short, straight Eustachian tube, and often by adenoids. The therape

Transcriptional Programs Underlying Cold Acclimation of Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio L.).

Properly regulated transcriptional responses to environmental perturbations are critical for the fitness of fish. Although gene expression profiles in the tissues of common carp upon cold stress were previously characterized, the transcriptional programs underlying cold acclimation are still not well known. In this study, the ability of three common carp strains including Hebao red carp (HB), Songpu mirror carp (SPM) and Yellow river carp (YR) to establish cold resistance after acclimation to a mild hypothermia stress at 18°C for 24 h was confirmed by measurements of the critical thermal minim
