Integration of healthcare services for HIV and non-communicable diseases in sub-Saharan Africa: protocol for a scoping review of randomised controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION: Stand-alone HIV clinics in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have effectively expanded antiretroviral therapy since the 2000s, transforming HIV from a deadly infection into a chronic condition. However, over the past decade, there has been a significant rise in the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) globally and in SSA. People living with HIV are at higher risk for some NCDs, including hypertension, diabetes and different cancers. The region's current healthcare infrastructure is not equipped to address this growing burden. Integrating health services for HIV and NCDs (ie, com

Murray Valley encephalitis virus surveillance and control initiatives in Australia. National Arbovirus Advisory Committee of the Communicable Diseases Network Australia.

Mechanisms for monitoring Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) virus activity include surveillance of human cases, surveillance for activity in sentinel animals, monitoring of mosquito vectors and monitoring of weather conditions. The monitoring of human cases is only one possible trigger for public health action and the additional surveillance systems are used in concert to signal the risk of human disease, often before the appearance of human cases. Mosquito vector surveillance includes mosquito trapping for speciation and enumeration of mosquitoes to monitor population sizes and relative compos

Do non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes associate with primary open-angle glaucoma? Insights from a case-control study in Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension and diabetes are rapidly emerging public health problems worldwide, and they associate with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). POAG is the most common cause of irreversible blindness. The most effective ways to prevent glaucoma blindness involve identifying high-risk populations and conducting routine screening for early case detection. This study investigated whether POAG associates with hypertension and diabetes in a Nepalese population. METHODS: To explore the history of systemic illness, our hospital-based case-control stu

Trends of age-related non-communicable diseases in people living with HIV and comparison with uninfected controls: A nationwide population-based study in South Korea.

OBJECTIVES: We aim to compare the trends of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and death among people living with HIV (PLWH) and uninfected controls in South Korea. METHODS: We identified PLWH from a nationwide database of all Korean citizens enrolled from 1 January 2004 to 31 December 2016. A control cohort was randomly selected for PLWH by frequency matching for age and sex in a 20:1 ratio. To compare NCD trends between the groups, adjusted incidence rate ratios for outcomes across ages, calendar years and times after HIV diagnosis were calculated. RESULTS: We included 14 134 PLWH and 282 03

A community-based programme to reduce non-communicable disease risk among persons living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods in three European countries: protocol for a controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of premature death in Europe and disproportionately affect persons experiencing disadvantages (i.e., low-income populations, migrants and ethnic minorities). The Health Outcomes from Raised Urban Settings (HORUS) evaluation study aims to implement and evaluate a community-based programme, based on the social-ecological model, to reduce key modifiable NCD risk factors. The study is performed in three European cities (Rijeka, Croatia; Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and Valencia, Spain). METHODS: The HORUS programme will be evaluated

Effects of Probiotics on Markers of Oxidative/Nitrosative Stress and Damage Associated with Inflammation in Non-communicable Diseases: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trials.

Inflammation and oxidative/nitrosative stress (O&NS) are serious complications in non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including endocrine and metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases. The beneficial probiotic microbes, such as Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Streptococcus, can decrease O&NS and inflammation. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with aims to elucidate the effects of probiotics on O&NS and inflammation in NCDs. A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and EMBASE resulted in the inclusion of studies if they met the eligibili

The effectiveness of general practice-based health checks on health behaviour and incidence on non-communicable diseases in individuals with low socioeconomic position: a randomised controlled trial in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of health checks aimed at the general population is disputable. However, it is not clear whether health checks aimed at certain groups at high risk may reduce adverse health behaviour and identify persons with metabolic risk factors and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of general practice-based health checks on health behaviour and incidence on NCDs in individuals with low socioeconomic position. METHODS: Individuals with no formal education beyond lower secondary school and aged 45-64 years were randomly assigned to the interve

AdoHealth e-wellness initiative for adolescent non-communicable disease risk reduction: protocol for a school-based cluster randomised controlled trial in SAS Nagar (Mohali), Punjab, India.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) increasingly affect adolescents, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Seven key lifestyle behaviours, alcohol and tobacco use, consumption of JUNCS foods (junk, ultra-processed, nutritionally inappropriate, caffeinated/coloured/carbonated foods/beverages, sugar-sweetened beverages); physical inactivity; inadequate sleep; excessive screen time; and stress, collectively termed the 'Big-7 Behavioural Risk Determinants', contribute to NCD onset in adolescence and persistence into adulthood. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of the

A proactive approach to prevent non-communicable diseases through screening and educating emergency department attendees to adopt healthy lifestyles: Study protocol for a pragmatic, multicenter, randomized controlled trial.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) have become the leading contributors to morbidity and mortality worldwide, responsible for 74% of all deaths. The major risk factors that substantially contribute to and significantly increase the risk of dying from NCDs include tobacco and alcohol use, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity. Proactive prevention strategies are vital in reducing the burden. Presenting at the emergency department (ED) can be an excellent "teachable moment" to intervene for unhealthy behaviors because people seeking medical treatment from doctors at EDs may be more motivated to a

A household-based community health worker programme for non-communicable disease, malnutrition, tuberculosis, HIV and maternal health: a stepped-wedge cluster randomised controlled trial in Neno District, Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Community health worker (CHW) programmes are a valuable component of primary care in resource-poor settings. The evidence supporting their effectiveness generally shows improvements in disease-specific outcomes relative to the absence of a CHW programme. In this study, we evaluated expanding an existing HIV and tuberculosis (TB) disease-specific CHW programme into a polyvalent, household-based model that subsequently included non-communicable diseases (NCDs), malnutrition and TB screening, as well as family planning and antenatal care (ANC). METHODS: We conducted a stepped-wedge c

A type II hybrid implementation-effectiveness study of the BECOME intervention: integrating Behavioral Community-Based Approaches for Mental Health and Non-Communicable Diseases delivered by community health workers-study protocol for a stepped wedge cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Common mental health conditions (CMHCs) such as depression and anxiety often co-occur with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) like hypertension and diabetes, compounding disability and mortality particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with under-resourced health systems. This comorbidity is driven by shared behavioral risk factors including stress, isolation, tobacco use, inactivity, poor diet, and nonadherence to treatment. The World Health Organization recommends evidence-based stress reduction (EBSR), behavioral activation (BA), and motivational interviewing (MI)

Situation of Sri Lanka, where autochthonous malaria is no longer a problem, and other infections dominate, such as dengue, leptospirosis and rickettsioses.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sri Lanka achieved a major milestone in communicable disease control in 2012 by reporting zero incidence of autochthonous malaria. However, reduction of malaria was associated with concurrent increase of several tropical diseases. This review looks into the time trends and epidemiology of these communicable diseases in Sri Lanka. RECENT FINDINGS: Reduction of malaria cases coincides with an increase of dengue, leptospirosis and rickettsioses in Sri Lanka. Although the case fatality rate of dengue has reduced and maintained below 1%, leptospirosis in clinical management is q

Monitoring and surveillance of chronic non-communicable diseases: progress and capacity in high-burden countries.

The burden of chronic, non-communicable diseases in low-income and middle-income countries is increasing. We outline a framework for monitoring of such diseases and review the mortality burden and the capacity of countries to respond to them. We show data from WHO data sources and published work for prevalence of tobacco use, overweight, and cause-specific mortality in 23 low-income and middle-income countries with a high burden of non-communicable disease. Data for national capacity for chronic disease prevention and control were generated from a global assessment that was done in WHO member

[The worldwide challenges of "new" or reemerging communicable diseases at the dawn of the 21st century].

In spite of the very significant advances made during the 20 th century in the prevention and the treatment of communicable diseases, infections are still today, even in developed countries, a major cause of morbidity and mortality. New infectious diseases have emerged (AIDS, legionellosis, exterotoxigenic E. coli, Ebola fever), others have significantly reemerged (tuberculosis, diphtheria, Bartonella infections) or have seen their geographic distribution widen considerably (dengue, Hantavirus, West Nile Virus, Lyme disease). New and widespread hepatotropic viruses (mainly hepatitis C) have be
