Microbial metabolites at the nexus of gut-brain communication and neurodevelopmental disorders.

The microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA) has emerged as a critical regulator of neurodevelopment, with microbial metabolites serving as key signaling molecules that bridge the intestinal ecosystem and the central nervous system. This review gathers current evidence that connects disruptions in microbial metabolites to the pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Our comprehensive overview discusses major neuroactive metabolite classes-short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), tryptophan derivatives, bi

Beyond Histamine: Mast Cell-Neuron Communication in Chronic Pruritic and Pain Disorders.

Chronic pruritic and cutaneous pain disorders are increasingly recognized as neuroimmune conditions driven by dynamic interactions between immune and sensory systems. While histamine has historically dominated models of mast cell-mediated itch, accumulating evidence indicates that non-histaminergic pathways are central to chronic disease. In this review, we synthesize current understanding of mast cell-neuron communication and propose a unifying framework in which these cells form functional neuroimmune units that sustain itch and pain through bidirectional signalling and feed-forward amplific

Translating the Power of Precision Medicine Into the World of Communication Disorders.

PURPOSE: Precision medicine is an emerging approach to medical diagnostics, prognostics, and intervention that takes an individual's genetic, environmental, and lifestyle-related profile into account to improve outcomes in medical conditions such as diabetes and cancer. Here, we explore how principles of precision medicine can be leveraged in the field of speech-language pathology. METHOD: We reviewed the literature and report the following: (a) brief introduction to precision medicine, (b) review of a prophylactic intervention for infants at a genetic risk for speech/language disorders, (c)

Different communication strategies for disclosing a diagnosis of schizophrenia and related disorders.

BACKGROUND: Delivering the diagnosis of a serious illness is an important skill in most fields of medicine, including mental health. Research has found that communication skills can impact on a person's recall and understanding of the diagnosis, treatment options and prognosis. People may feel confused and perplexed when information about their illness is not communicated properly. Sharing information about diagnosis of a serious mental illness is particularly challenging. The nature of mental illness is often difficult to explain since there may be no clear aetiology, and the treatment option

Do developmental communication disorders exist in the signed modality? Perspectives from professionals.

PURPOSE: This study focused on whether developmental communication disorders exist in American Sign Language (ASL) and how they might be characterized. ASL studies is an emerging field; educators and clinicians have minimal access to descriptions of communication disorders of the signed modality. Additionally, there are limited resources for assessing ASL acquisition. This article is designed to raise clinicians' awareness about developmental communication disorders in ASL and categorize types of atypicality that have been witnessed. METHOD: We conducted 4 focus groups and one 1-on-1 intervie

[Characteristics of mental disorders in psychiatric patients with mental retardation--preliminary communication].

UNLABELLED: In mentally retarded persons the same psychiatric disorders may be recognized as in general population. Mental retardation is a predisposing factor to appearance of different kinds of psychiatric disorders. Taking into account the fact that mentally retarded persons have weaker defense mechanisms and more often suffer from psychiatric disorders it seems to be interesting what reasons determine psychiatric hospitalizations in population of mentally retarded patients. THE AIM OF THE STUDY: Analysis of mental disorders determining psychiatric hospitalizations in mentally retarded pat

Psychosocial co-morbidities in adolescents and adults with histories of communication disorders.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have considered the long-term psychosocial outcomes of individuals with histories of early childhood speech sound disorders (SSD). Research on long-term psychosocial outcomes of individuals with language impairment (LI) have frequently failed to consider the effects of co-morbid SSD. The purpose of this study was to compare individuals with histories of SSD-only versus SSD with LI on these outcomes and to examine the contributions of other comorbid conditions including reading disorders (RD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Randomized comparison of two communication interventions for preschoolers with autism spectrum disorders.

This randomized group experiment compared the efficacy of 2 communication interventions (Responsive Education and Prelinguistic Milieu Teaching [RPMT] and the Picture Exchange Communication System [PECS]) in 36 preschoolers with autism spectrum disorders. Each treatment was delivered 3 times per week, in 20-min sessions, for 6 months. The results revealed that the RPMT facilitated the frequency of generalized turn taking and generalized initiating joint attention more than did the PECS. The latter effect occurred only for children who began treatment with at least some initiating joint attenti

Conversion Disorder in an Appalachian Community.

OBJECTIVES: Conversion disorder (CD) is believed to be the manifestation of physical and/or neurological symptoms for primary gain without an identifiable organic cause. Although it is believed to be more common in rural areas, the literature examining this claim is sparse. To our knowledge, no study has been published evaluating the prevalence of CD in a rural Appalachian population. The aim of this study was to characterize and determine the prevalence of CD per Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition, criteria in a rural Appalachian psychiatric consultation servic
