Dentist-patient communication on dental anxiety using the social media: A randomized controlled trial.

The purpose of the present study was to assess the effects of dentist-patient communication via social media on dental anxiety and to determine the appropriate timing of such communications. In this randomized, double-blinded and controlled trial, we used Instagram's quick replies system to answer patients' questions to alleviate dental anxiety for patients undergoing impacted teeth extraction under local anesthesia. Patients were assigned randomly into four groups according to the timing of such communications: only after (group 1, n = 36), only before (group 2, n = 35), before and after the

Addressing the role of medical students using community mobilization and social media in the Ebola response.

Health professions education in the 21st century should incorporate both community mobilization and social media strategies. First, community mobilization facilitates change by educating community members with evidence-based, high-quality and up-to-date health information and empowering their active participation in target health initiatives. Second, advancements in technology and globalization foster the development of innovative communication technologies used as a key tool in the 'roll out' of community health initiatives during epidemics such as Ebola virus disease. In August 2014, medical

Increasing organ donation in Hispanic Americans: the role of media and other community outreach efforts.

IMPORTANCE: The growing demand for organs continues to outpace supply. This gap is most pronounced in minority populations, who constitute more than 40% of the organ waiting list. Hispanic Americans are particularly less likely to donate compared with other minorities for reasons that remain poorly understood and difficult to change. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether outreach interventions that target Hispanic Americans improve organ donation outcomes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Prospective before-after study of 4 southern California neighborhoods with a high percentage of Hispanic Ame

Social Media in the Diabetes Community: a Novel Way to Assess Psychosocial Needs in People with Diabetes and Their Caregivers.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Diabetes is a chronic disease that, regardless of type, requires intensive, ongoing self-management. As a result, people with diabetes (PWD) often have complex environmental, social, behavioral, and informational needs, many of which are unmet in healthcare settings and systems. To help meet these needs, many PWD interact with diabetes online communities (DOCs), including platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and blogs, to share real-life support, problems, and concerns with other PWD, offering a rich source of data on patient-reported outcomes. This article reviews recent ps

Bacterial and fungal communities and network dynamics in Otitis media patients upon 1,8-Cineol treatment.

The present study investigated the bacterial and fungal communities and cross-domain network interactions in patients with chronic Otitis media in response to the natural monoterpene medicinal 1,8-Cineol as a promising treatment option. While the bacterial community showed modest changes with preserved core genera, the fungal community underwent dramatic diversification and network expansion. This suggests that treatment may have disrupted competitive exclusion mechanisms in the latter, allowing for increased diversity and interactions, despite no significant changes in traditional diversity m

Delivering eye health education to deprived communities in India through a social media-based innovation.

In this article, Chandrani Maitra, with her supervisor, Prof. Jennifer Rowley, reports on her PhD research conducted at Manchester Metropolitan University. This research aimed to develop understanding of the benefits of, and the challenges associated with the use of social media to disseminate eye health information in deprived communities in India. Such communities typically have a low level of access to health information, as the result of poor literacy, poverty, lack of women's empowerment, cultural practices, society dynamics, and medical malpractice. This study used an intervention based

A program to respond to otitis media in remote Australian Aboriginal communities: a qualitative investigation of parent perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous infants and children in Australia, especially in remote communities, experience early and chronic otitis media (OM) which is difficult to treat and has lifelong impacts in health and education. The LiTTLe Program (Learning to Talk, Talking to Learn) aimed to increase infants' access to spoken language input, teach parents to manage health and hearing problems, and support children's school readiness. This paper aimed to explore caregivers' views about this inclusive, parent-implemented early childhood program for 0-3 years in an Aboriginal community health context. METH

Development of a media campaign on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders for Northern Plains American Indian communities.

Alcohol-exposed pregnancies are especially of concern for American Indians. The Indian Health Service reported that 47% to 56% of pregnant patients admitted to drinking alcohol during their pregnancy. In addition, rates of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome are estimated to be as high as 3.9 to 9.0 per 1,000 live births among American Indians in the Northern Plains, making prevention of alcohol-exposed pregnancies an important public health effort for this population. The goal of this article is to add to the literature on universal prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum disorders by describing the developm

Carotid intima-media thickness and cerebrovascular disease in community-dwelling older people without stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) is a noninvasive measure of atherosclerosis, but it is unclear whether it is a stronger risk factor for large vessel disease or small vessel disease. METHODS: One hundred seven volunteers, aged 75 to 81 years, underwent measurements of CIMT and vascular risk factors and brain MRI (structural and diffusion tensor); those with history of stroke were excluded. RESULTS: In 96 subjects without stroke, there were significant associations between CIMT and markers of large vessel disease (carotid stenosis: rho=0.28; P=0.01) and intermedia
