Radiosurgery in dentistry: a review.

The aim of the present study was to analyse the clinical potential of radiosurgery applied to modern dentistry through a revision of the indexed literature. Radiosurgery represents a recent form of electrosurgery working at a frequency of 3.0-4.0 MHz. The depth of penetration of the waves is inversely proportional to the frequency. Radiowaves working at high frequency express a lower penetration with a consequent lower tissue alteration. The authors analyzed the literature in order to give to the scientific community an overview of the possible applications of radiosurgery in the clinical dent

Knowledge and perception regarding molar incisor hypomineralisation among dental students and dental hygienist students in Spain: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) has a high prevalence in the Spanish pediatric population and is a precursor of carious lesions in teeth in which it is present. Although this pathology is included in the curricula of the Degree in Dentistry and the Training Cycle in Oral Hygiene in our country, the contents currently taught seem to be insufficient in relation to the level of knowledge that we have today about this condition. METHODS: A digital questionnaire of 18 questions was sent to a sample of 448 students attending the 4th and 5th year of the Degree in Dentistry and 2nd

Making the Case for Open Dental Education.

Dental education as a field and dentistry as a profession are facing significant challenges, including workforce shortages, ever-rising costs, unmet student and community needs, as well as quality of pedagogical practices. Open educational resources are learning objects that are freely accessible and are able to be retained, reused, revised, remixed, and redistributed under the philosophy of more openness and sharing. While some efforts are being made to address the aforementioned concerns, the prospects of more readily welcoming and adopting open education have not been discussed as a potenti

Utilising Digital Dentistry for the Management of Patients With Hypodontia of Lateral Incisers.

Management of missing maxillary lateral incisors can involve joint restorative and orthodontic treatment planning and intervention. Digital dental technologies are contributing to better communication and precision of planning both between clinicians and patients and within specialists. This paper outlines the ways in which digital dentistry is facilitating this process with a focus on restoratively-driven treatment planning and delivery.

Exploring learning through volunteerism at a student-run community dental clinic.

BACKGROUND: The Student Health Initiative for the Needs of Edmonton (SHINE) dental clinic is a student-run clinic that provides free oral health care to low-income inner-city individuals in Edmonton, Canada. SHINE was managed and operated by the Dental Students' Association, independent from the University of Alberta, at the time of data collection. Students care for patients under the supervision of volunteer dentists and dental hygienists from within the community. Although not a formal education facility, the SHINE clinic appears to offer valuable learning opportunities, based on anecdotal

A review of oro-antral communications.

Oro-antral communications are occasionally produced during routine oral surgery procedures and often cannot be avoided. Dentistry's emphasis on implantology means that defects in the maxillary sinus are encountered far more frequently than before; therefore, knowledge of the maxillary sinus is of the utmost importance. Unfortunately, many general dentists have not been trained to provide proper treatment to correct these defects. Swift diagnosis and subsequent treatment are vital to proper and successful management. This article reviews the literature and the anatomy of the maxillary sinus and

A programme of preventive dentistry in field conditions carried out in Glasgow, Scotland.

A caries-preventive regime comprising fluoride supplementation in age-related doses, three monthly acid-phosphate-fluoride applications, fissure sealing of deciduous and first permanent molars and chair-side dental health education, had been proved cost-effective in a single health centre setting. It was therefore expanded to a community-wide project in the Greater Glasgow area. This study describes the coverage achieved by the scheme, the demographic details of the children involved, and measured the dental health benefits accrued by the participants. The children received an annual dental ex

Instrument fracture in periodontal therapy: ethical disclosure and clinical management - a case report.

Periodontal instrument fractures are rare events in dentistry, with limited literature available on their occurrence and management. This case report highlights an incident involving the fracture of a periodontal sickle scaler blade during manual instrumentation for the removal of calculus. The fracture occurred during instrumentation on the mesial surface of the maxillary right second molar, and the separated blade was subsequently pushed into the sulcus. A radiographic assessment was performed to verify the precise location of the fractured segment. Following confirmation, the broken blade w

Beyond binary dentistry: Should artificial intelligence think more like clinicians?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly influencing dental diagnosis and clinical decision-making, yet many AI systems continue to represent disease and treatment outcomes through discrete categories. Although binary classification has contributed substantially to diagnostic performance, it does not always reflect how clinicians reason in practice. Dental decisions are frequently made under incomplete information, biological variability, and competing clinical findings, requiring dentists to weigh probabilities, alternative explanations, and degrees of confidence rather than simply choosi

Dental amalgam and mercury in dentistry.

Mercury in dentistry has re-emerged as a contentious issue in public health, predominantly because so many people are inadvertently exposed to mercury in order to obtain the benefits of dental amalgam fillings, and the risks remain difficult to interpret. This commentary aims to examine the issues involved in public policy assessment of the continued use of dental amalgam in dentistry. More than 30 per cent of Australian adults are concerned about mercury from dental amalgam fillings but only a small percentage report having their amalgam fillings removed.
