Frequent Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Introductions Into an Inner-city Jail: Indications of Community Transmission Networks.

BACKGROUND: Jails may facilitate spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in urban areas. We examined MRSA colonization upon entrance to a large urban jail to determine if there are MRSA transmission networks preceding incarceration. METHODS: Males incarcerated in Cook County Jail (Chicago) were enrolled, with enrichment for people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV), within 72 hours of intake. Surveillance cultures assessed prevalence of MRSA colonization. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) identified preincarceration transmission networks. We examined methicillin-

Mapping the Symptom Networks of Depression, Anxiety, and Their Comorbidity Among Chinese Individuals Under Community Correction.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals under community correction are a high-risk population for anxiety and depression, which frequently co-occur. However, the symptom network structures of anxiety, depression, and their comorbidity in this population remained unexplored. This study addresses this gap using a network analysis approach. METHODS: A total of 818 Chinese individuals under community correction (134 females, 684 males; over 95% aged 18-60 years) completed the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). Separate symptom networks for anxiety and depression were estimated

OMICON: a community resource for studying gene coexpression networks in normal and neoplastic human brain samples.

Genome-wide coexpression analysis of intact tissue samples is a powerful approach for identifying reproducible signatures of cell types and states, since it can survey vast numbers of individuals, cells, and transcripts. However, it can be difficult to optimize gene coexpression network construction and compare results from independent analyses. To address these challenges, we developed OMICON (theomicon.ucsf.edu) for research on human brain gene coexpression networks. OMICON contains gene expression data from >17K normal and neoplastic human brain samples with standardized metadata. Systemati

Genomic Analysis of Community Transmission Networks for MRSA Among Females Entering a Large Inner-city Jail.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear if there are differences in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) risk between sexes in high-risk populations. METHODS: Females incarcerated at the Cook County Jail were enrolled within 72 hours of intake. Surveillance cultures (nares, throat, groin) were collected to determine the prevalence of MRSA colonization. A survey was administered to identify colonization predictors. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify predictors of colonization at intake. Genomic sequencing was performed on MRSA colonization and archived clinical iso

Community care for adults with Williams syndrome: how families cope and the availability of support networks.

A study of the adjustment difficulties and needs of 70 adults with Williams syndrome found that the majority continued to live at home and remained heavily dependent on their families for their self-care. Twenty-nine families (41.4%) had had no contact with a social worker in the preceding 2 years, and 34 out of the 48 families whose children still lived at home (70.8%) had no access to respite care. Advice regarding benefits, and appropriate living and occupational arrangements for the adults was also patchy. Despite progressive medical problems, and high rates of behavioural and emotional di

Trust, Communication, and Community Networks: How the CORE Group Polio Project Community Volunteers Led the Fight against Polio in Ethiopia's Most At-Risk Areas.

The last case of wild poliovirus in Ethiopia was reported in 2014. Until the disease is eradicated globally, the risk of reimportation remains high. In 1999, the CORE Group Polio Project (CGPP) began its community-centered polio eradication efforts in Ethiopia, using community volunteers (CVs) to ensure that no child has missed polio vaccine. This article documents the efforts of CVs and highlights innovative strategies, successes, and contributions. Qualitative data were collected from the CGPP implementation areas in 85 border woredas (districts) of Benishangul-Gumuz; Gambella; Oromia; South

Artificial molecular communication network based on DNA nanostructures recognition.

Artificial simulated communication networks inspired by molecular communication in organisms use biological and chemical molecules as information carriers to realize information transmission. However, the design of programmable, multiplexed and general simulation models remains challenging. Here, we develop a DNA nanostructure recognition-based artificial molecular communication network (DR-AMCN), in which rectangular DNA origami nanostructures serve as nodes and their recognition as edges. After the implementation of DR-AMCN with various communication mechanisms including serial, parallel, or

The landscape of cell regulatory and communication networks in the human dental follicle.

INTRODUCTION: The dental follicle localizes the surrounding enamel organ and dental papilla of the developing tooth germ during the embryonic stage. It can differentiate and develop to form the periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone tissues. Postnatally, the dental follicle gradually degenerates, but some parts of the dental follicle remain around the impacted tooth. However, the specific cellular components and the intricate regulatory mechanisms governing the postnatal development and biological function of the dental follicle have not been completely understood. METHODS: We anal

oComm: Overlapping Community Detection in Multi-View Brain Network.

Many efforts have been made on developing multi-view network community detection approaches. However, most of them can only reveal non-overlapping community structure. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for Overlapping Community Detection in Multi-view Brain Network (oComm). For modeling the overlapping community structure, a community membership strength vector is introduced for each node in each view, based on which a network generative model is designed to measure the within-view community quality. For measuring the consistency of overlapping community structures across different vi

Cellular communication network factor 3 in cartilage development and maintenance.

Cellular communication network factor (CCN) 3 is one of the classical members of the CCN family, which are characterized by common molecular structures and multiple functionalities. Although this protein was discovered as a gene product overexpressed in a truncated form in nephroblastoma, recent studies have revealed its physiological roles in the development and homeostasis of mammalian species, in addition to its pathological association with a number of diseases. Cartilage is a tissue that creates most of the bony parts and cartilaginous tissues that constitute the human skeleton, in which

At the edge? HIV stigma and centrality in a community's social network in Namibia.

Social network analysis was used to examine the relationship between HIV/AIDS stigmatization, perceived risk, and centrality in the community network (via participation in community groups). The findings from respondents in Keetmanshoop, Namibia (N = 375) showed an interaction between stigma and risk perceptions\hose who perceived higher HIV risk and stronger HIV stigma participated in fewer community groups and participated in groups with members who participated less widely across the network. In contrast, those who perceived higher HIV risk and weaker HIV stigma participated more, and were

Xenophobia, ethnic community, and immigrant youths' friendship network formation.

Immigrant youth often rebuild their friendships and other social networks after arriving in a new country. The difficulties involved can threaten their psychosocial development. Formation of social networks needs to be understood within the macro sociocultural context that shapes the experience. Nonetheless, the current literature on social network formation rarely captures that context. Knowledge about immigrant youths' social network, for example, is often embedded in assimilation, ethnic identity, and adaptation literature. This paper examines how the sociocultural context enables immigrant

Community genetics and dignity in diversity in the Quebec Network of Genetic Medicine.

The Quebec Network of Genetic Medicine (QNGM), implemented in 1971, has been an integrated program of community genetics serving the population (approximately 7.5 million) of Quebec province in Canada. QNGM reported to the Minister of Social Affairs and operated under an umbrella of universal health insurance in the province. The Network's programs have been run by members of the four university medical schools of the province under the direction of a central committee. A global annual budget was awarded to QNGM from its inception. Among its many programs, QNGM supported: (1) two newborn scree

Thyroid follicular cells: the resting membrane potential and the communication network.

Intracellular recordings of membrane potentials, input resistance and time constant have been made in vitro from the follicular cells of the rat, rabbit and guinea-pig thyroid glands using glass microelectrodes. The passive permeability properties of these cells have been investigated by altering the concentration of one or more ions in the superfusing fluid. Investigations into the intercellular coupling characteristics of the thyroid gland were made by inserting two microelectrodes into neighbouring communicating cells. The mean transmembrane potentials were between - 60 and - 70 mV in all t

Human cortical networks trade communication efficiency for computational reliability.

Brains are often described as cost-efficient communication networks that optimally balance long-connection costs against fast communication. Inspired by the "use it or lose it" principle, we present a game-theoretic model of self-organizing neural units showing the brain is suboptimal in both regards. Regional competition for connectivity under propagative dynamics yields networks resembling the human cortex yet more efficient and economical. In addition, using a reservoir computing framework, we find comparable information processing capacity, but synthetic optimal communication networks show

An in-body networking system for communication between wearable and implantable therapeutics.

Networks of bioelectronic sensors and actuators enable closed-loop therapies that connect distant, related physiological dynamics. Currently, device interactions are limited by communication methods that inefficiently penetrate tissue and require bulky components. Inspired by the ionic signaling of the nervous system, we engineered a communication platform that uses tissue as a conductive medium to transmit signals among implants and wearables through epidermal, subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, and gastrointestinal spaces. Devices generate transient electric fields that selectively activate othe
