Building Community-Academic Research Partnerships to End the HIV Epidemic in Arizona: Findings to Inform Next Steps.

In 2022, Arizona saw an unprecedented 20% increase in new HIV infections and viral suppression rates of 61.8% among people with HIV. Existing local efforts to address HIV should be complemented with research to identify gaps and approaches to improve outcomes. Using CBPR as a guiding framework, we explored the potential for community-academic HIV research collaborations by hosting a Community-Academic HIV Research Partnership Series. Attendance across five workshop sessions totaled 123 attendees, with representation from nonprofit community-based organizations, clinic settings, city and state

A Community-Partnered Cancer Disparities Research Collaborative Model for Engaging Members of Low-Income Black Communities in Cancer Research.

Black adults experience the highest incidence and/or mortality rates for many commonly diagnosed cancers; yet they are underrepresented in cancer basic, applied, and translational research. This underrepresentation is greatest among Black adults living in low-income communities. There are many barriers to these individuals participating in cancer research, including limited effective research engagement strategies. This paper describes the University of Florida (UF) Health Cancer Center Community-Partnered Cancer Disparities Research Collaborative (CDRC) model and its implementation. The UF CD

Discussion suppers as a means for community engagement.

PURPOSE: This paper describes how Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network (LVHHN), a large tertiary care urban hospital, used discussion suppers as a means for community engagement designed to lead to community health improvement. An overview of the implementation of the project is described. PROJECT: In 1996, with an awareness of the need to address population-based health improvement, the Dorothy Rider Pool Health Care Trust and LVHHN undertook a multiyear, multidimensional effort to improve health and quality of life in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. Data were obtained via a series o

Institutional Power and Sexual Violence Against Nuns in the Catholic Church.

Sexual violence by Catholic clergy against adults remains largely overlooked in public debate and Church communications. Drawing on the Independent Commission on Sexual Abuse in the Church (CIASE) in France, this article analyzes 22 in-depth interviews with Catholic nuns and lay women who reported sexual violence or other abuses of power by male clerics. Our findings show how community rules of enclosure, poverty, and obedience, combined with a gendered hierarchy between priests and nuns, organize dependence, isolation, and silence. We argue that sexual violence against nuns is better understo

"They walked in and walked straight out of adult treatment": creating tailored drug outreach and service provision for young adults in England.

BACKGROUND: In England and Wales, drug use and related harms among young adults aged 18-25 remain high. They are neglected in existing service provision. Drawing on evaluation findings of a multi-component drug outreach service in England and informed by the concept of 'emerging adulthood', this paper explores the possibilities for the development of bespoke interventions for young adults. METHODS: This paper draws on semi-structured interviews (n=19) conducted with managers and practitioners within the outreach service, regional leads for young people's services, and strategic stakeholders i

Community Group Model Building as a Method for Engaging Participants and Mobilising Action in Public Health.

Group model building (GMB) is a qualitative method aimed at engaging stakeholders to collectively consider the causes of complex problems. Tackling inequities in community nutrition is one such complex problem, as the causes are driven by a variety of interactions between individual factors, social structures, local environments and the global food system. This methods paper describes a GMB process that utilises three system mapping tools in a study with members of a multicultural, low-income community to explore declining fruit and vegetable intake in children. The tools were: 1) graphs over

An interdisciplinary street outreach program to engage vulnerable neighbors in care.

Those experiencing poverty, homelessness, or behavioral health disorders are difficult to engage and maintain in health care services. These vulnerable populations experience unique barriers to engagement in health care services, which fuel health inequity. We need innovative approaches to address this need. This paper discusses the reciprocal relationship between a community center and a local university, which led to a street outreach program that provides a dynamic interprofessional experience for nursing, medical, and social work students and helps connect vulnerable populations to care. The value of tabletop exercises and one-page planning documents.

Tabletop exercises are an excellent means for teaching people what a severe pandemic entails and for helping participants realise both the importance of planning and how to relate to an existing plan. Creating a one-page document to describe one's pandemic response plan and delineate trigger points enhances understanding of a complex plan and is excellent for guiding action during a pandemic. This paper will discuss the value of both tabletop exercises and one-page pandemic response plan summaries. In addition, it discusses the lessons learned from their use at the Johns Hopkins University App

Increasing accessibility for community participants at academic conferences.

BACKGROUND: To decrease the gulf between academic and community perspectives, there has been an increased call among stakeholder groups to collaborate in solving complex urban health problems. Despite these recent shifts, however, community partners face barriers to participate in conferences, ultimately limiting exchange of ideas and uptake of research data. This paper reports on the evaluation of the strategy used to engage community participants at the 4th International Conference on Urban Health (ICUH) held in Toronto, Canada, in October, 2005. METHOD: We surveyed participants (n = 98) an

Ripple Effects Mapping: Evaluating Multilevel Perspectives and Impacts of a Statewide Community-Academic Partnership Network on Covid-19 Health Disparities.

INTRODUCTION: Community-academic partnerships played an important role in addressing Covid-19-related health disparities in historically marginalised groups such as racial ethnic minorities and low-income and rural communities in the pandemic. Part of the federal response involved establishing regional community academic networks that engaged highly impacted communities in health disparities research. The statewide Share, Trust, Organize, Partner COVID-19 California Alliance (STOP COVID-19 CA) network was part of the federal response. METHODS: In spring 2024, ripple effects mapping (REM), a p

The Impact of Community Engagement in the Design and Implementation of the Flint Registry.

BACKGROUND: The Flint water crisis (FWC) was a public health tragedy caused by crumbling infrastructure, subverted democracy, and indifference toward a predominantly poor and Black community that resulted in lead-in-water exposure, Legionnaires' disease, and emotional and health-related trauma. Through the cooperation of community partners, the Flint Registry (FR) was conceived to track long-term health and improve public health via service connections. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to share the FR's community-partnered, multi-tiered engagement strategy and determine the efficacy of this stra

Community-based participatory research is a promising approach to reducing health disparities. It empowers individuals and communities to become the major players in solving their own health problems. We discuss the use of community-based participatory research and other strategies to enhance empowerment. We also discuss projects from the Centers for Population Health and Health Disparities that have empowered communities to achieve positive health outcomes aimed at reducing disparities. We offer recommendations to policy makers for involving residents in efforts to achieve health equity.

Six components necessary for effective public health program implementation.

Public health programs succeed and survive if organizations and coalitions address 6 key areas. (1) Innovation to develop the evidence base for action; (2) a technical package of a limited number of high-priority, evidence-based interventions that together will have a major impact; (3) effective performance management, especially through rigorous, real-time monitoring, evaluation, and program improvement; (4) partnerships and coalitions with public- and private-sector organizations; (5) communication of accurate and timely information to the health care community, decision makers, and the publ
