Molecular basis of haemoglobinopathies and G6PD deficiency in the Comorian population.

INTRODUCTION: The Comoro archipelago is characterised by a high prevalence of red cell genetic disorders such as G6PD deficiency and haemoglobinopathies, being a region endemic for malaria. Over the last 15 years, the city of Marseilles in France has become the main destination for Comorian immigrants. This Comorian community includes patients with sickle cell disease, sickle cell/beta-thalassaemia trait, thalassaemias and G6PD deficiency. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Allele frequencies for haemoglobin S, beta-thalassaemia and G6PD deficiency were determined from neonatal and prenatal screenings of

Intimate partner violence as a predictor of marital disruption in sub-Saharan Africa: A multilevel analysis of demographic and health surveys.

INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence has gained momentum as health, social, and human right issue across the globe. Women within sub-Saharan Africa often do not report any case of violence due to the acceptance of violence which is rooted in their socio-cultural beliefs and practices. With a high prevalence of marital disruption in sub-Saharan Africa, it is important that we understand the role intimate partner violence plays in this phenomenon. Hence, this present study assessed the association between intimate partner violence and marital disruption among women in sub-Saharan Africa. MET

K13-Propeller Polymorphisms in Plasmodium falciparum Isolates from Patients in Mayotte in 2013 and 2014.

Plasmodium falciparum isolates were collected from 29 malaria patients treated with artemether-lumefantrine in Mayotte in 2013 and 2014. Twenty-four cases (83%) consisted of imported malaria. Seventeen percent of the isolates presented mutations in one of the six K13-propeller blades (N490H, F495L, N554H/K, and E596G). A total of 23.8% of the isolates from the Union of Comoros showed K13-propeller polymorphisms. Three of the 18 isolates (16.7%) from Grande Comore showed polymorphisms (N490H, N554K, and E596G).

Absence of Evidence of Rift Valley Fever Infection in Eulemur fulvus (Brown Lemur) in Mayotte During an Interepidemic Period.

The potential role of Eulemur fulvus (brown lemur) in the epidemiology of Rift Valley fever (RVF) in Mayotte, during an interepidemic period, was explored. In February and March 2016, 72 animals were blood sampled and tested for RVF. No evidence of RVF genome or antibodies was found in the samples. The role of other wild mammals on the island should, however, be further investigated.

Cymothales manselli sp. nov.: an unexpected new antlion species widely distributed in the Afrotropics (Neuroptera: Myrmeleontidae: Dendroleontinae).

The identity of the widely distributed Afrotropical antlion species Cymothales bouvieri van der Weele, 1907 was herein revised. Based on detailed morphological comparisons, only the populations distributed in Madagascar and the Comoros are confirmed to be the true C. bouvieri. However, the so-called C. bouvieri from the African continent is a new species, i.e., C. manselli sp. nov. Additionally, the occurrence of some myrmeleontid species in both Madagascar and the African continent is discussed, and the accuracy of these distribution patterns requires further clarification in the future.

The burden of malaria in East Africa: prevalence, risk factors, and control strategies.

BACKGROUND: Malaria continues to exert a severe toll on public health in East Africa, accounting for a large share of global morbidity and mortality. Despite national strategies and donor-funded efforts, the disease persists due to complex, intersecting biological, environmental, and socioeconomic drivers. This review aims to analyse malaria burden, identify risk factors, and assess the effectiveness of control strategies across twelve East African countries to inform tailored and evidence-based interventions. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using peer-reviewed literature, national

[Combination of three cutaneous diseases in Mayotte].

This report describes the case of a young woman from Mayotte (Comoros Islands) who presented a combination of three cutaneous diseases, i.e. pityriasis versicolor, scabies, and multibacillary leprosy. Symptoms of leprosy were concealed by those of the other two diseases. After multidrug therapy for leprosy, the patient developed erythema nodosum leprosum that was successfully treated using pentoxifylline. Combination of cutaneous diseases can alter usual presentations and lead to misdiagnosis. It is important to take into account possible disease combination to establish proper diagnosis and p

[Acute necrotizing pancreatitis and complete atrioventricular block complicating the course of ascaris infection in an adult patient].

Ascaris lumbricoides, a large round nematode, which causes human ascariasis, is the most prevalent helminth in the world. Ascariasis is usually asymptomatic but can cause serious complications, with a mortality rate of 5%. We report a 55-year-old woman from Comoros who presented with ascariasis complicated by occult cholangitis, severe acute pancreatitis, and transient complete heart-block. Cardiac damage due to migrating ascaris larvae was the likely explanation of the transient heart-block in this patient, although such a complication had never been described previously.

Rift Valley Fever.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic viral disease that affects domestic and wild ruminants such as cattle, sheep, goats, camels, and buffaloes. Rift valley fever virus (RVFV), the causative agent of RVF, can also infect humans. RVFV is an arthropod-borne virus (arbovirus) that is primarily spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes or exposure to infected blood. RVFV was first isolated and characterized in the Rift Valley of Kenya in 1931 and is endemic throughout sub-Saharan Africa, including Comoros and Madagascar, the Arabian Peninsula (Saudi Arabia and Yemen), and Mayotte.

Estimations of densities of marine litter on the fringing reefs of Mayotte (France - South Western Indian Ocean) - impacts on coral communities.

The present study was carried out at 22 stations located on the fringing reefs of the island of Mayotte inside the perimeter of the Marine Natural Park of Mayotte (PNMM). The average assessment of the number of samples of marine litter (ML) collected at these stations was 3.9 ± 1.3 ML per 500 m2 in winter and 3.8 ± 1.1 ML per 500 m2 in summer. Plastic ML was dominant, representing approximately 92% of the litter collected at the stations for the two seasons. The majority was plastic ML from fishing gear (lines, nets etc.). Station 18 presented remarkable average densities of 39 ± 4.2 ML per 50

Some advances in coelacanth biology.

Participants in the British-French-American Expedition to the Comoro Islands in 1972 were able to observe a living coelacanth and to obtain fresh tissue from two specimens, which were processed in the field for subsequent research. This work, by many people in several countries, still continues, and this lecture gives a condensed account of some of the investigations so far published and in progress. Separate accounts of the French contributions, by J. Anthony, of the chemistry of the body fluids, by R. W. Griffith, and of the respiration, by G. M. Hughes, are being published concurrently, the

[News: Introduction of the mpox virus into the south-western Indian Ocean territories].

Mpox (or monkeypox) is an emerging zoonotic disease caused by the mpox virus (MPV), which has recently spread geographically, particularly with the emergence of clade Ib in Central Africa. Since December 2025, cases have been reported in the south-western Indian Ocean territories, linked to an active outbreak in Madagascar. In Mayotte Island, ten cases were confirmed between January and February 2026, including imported cases and local secondary and tertiary transmissions. In Réunion Island, four cases were identified, all associated with a stay in Madagascar or secondary transmissions. The pa

Case series of 12 Bartonella quintana endocarditis from the Southwest Indian Ocean.

BACKGROUND: Bartonella spp. are fastidious bacteria frequently identified as the cause of blood culture-negative (BCN) endocarditis. However, Bartonella infections are difficult to diagnose in routine laboratory testing and their incidence is probably underestimated. We investigated the epidemiological and clinical features of Bartonella endocarditis cases diagnosed between 2009 and 2021 on Reunion Island (Southwest Indian Ocean). METHOD: We retrospectively included all patients diagnosed with Bartonella endocarditis at Reunion Island University Hospital during this period. Endocarditis was d

Reunion Island, a sentinel territory for antimicrobial-resistant bacteria surveillance in the South-Western Indian Ocean: a retrospective survey using hospitalized patient screening, 2015-2017.

BACKGROUND: In 2015, antimicrobial resistance was identified as a public health priority for the South-Western Indian Ocean (SWIO) (i.e. Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte (France), Reunion Island (France), and Seychelles). However, in 2020, colonization rates of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (ARB) in human populations on most islands in SWIO were still not known and neither hospital nor community colonization rates had been estimated. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of colonization of six ARB groups in hospitalized patients residing in the SWIO territories. The si

Clinical manifestations of human leptospirosis: bacteria matter.

INTRODUCTION: A high incidence of human leptospirosis is recorded on Mayotte, an oceanic island located in southwestern Indian Ocean, but the severity of the disease appears relatively mild in terms of mortality rate and admission to the intensive care unit. It has been proposed that mild leptospirosis may result from a limited virulence of some of the occurring Leptospira species to which the population is exposed. METHODS: Clinical and biological data of patients admitted to the Centre Hospitalier de Mayotte were collected and the infecting Leptospira species were determined through molecul

Southeast Asian ovalocytosis and a sickle cell trait in a young patient with sudden retinal stroke: a fortuitous association?

We report a case of retinal stroke in a patient from the Comoros Islands with both sickle cell trait and Southeast Asian ovalocytosis (SAO). Southeast Asian ovalocytosis is a dominantly inherited trait, frequent in Southeast Asia, caused by a 27 nucleotide deletion in the SLC4A1 gene that encodes band 3, leading to a decreased anion exchange but an increased cation leak across the erythrocyte membrane. We hypothesized that the red cell dehydration that can be induced by this cation leak can facilitate polymerization of Hb S [beta6(A3)Glu -->Val, GAG>GTG]. Southeast Asian ovalocytosis could the
