The presence of mahi-mahi at multi-predator feeding aggregations modifies striped marlin attack behaviour.

Terrestrial multi-species predator feeding aggregations (MPFAs) are characterized by contest competition, but scramble competition is likely more common at MPFAs in pelagic waters. However, empirical investigations are rare. Aerial video was used to estimate abundances of striped marlin and mahi-mahi alongside their attack and capture rates and spatio-temporal positioning as they competed at prey schools. Mahi-mahi had higher capture efficiencies than marlin, and the presence of marlin did not affect mahi-mahi predatory behaviour. Conversely, the presence of mahi-mahi in smaller abundances may

Inhibitory Theta Burst Stimulation Highlights the Role of Left aIPS and Right TPJ during Complementary and Imitative Human-Avatar Interactions in Cooperative and Competitive Scenarios.

Competitive and cooperative interactions are based on anticipation or synchronization with the partner's actions. Both forms of interaction may either require performing imitative or complementary movements with respect to those performed by our partner. We explored how parietal regions involved in the control of imitative behavior (temporo-parietal junction, TPJ), goal coding and visuo-motor integration (anterior intraparietal sulcus, aIPS) contribute to the execution of imitative and complementary movements during cooperative and competitive interactions. To this aim, we delivered off-line n

The Impact of Wavelight Technology on Performance and Pacing and Tactical Behavior in 1500-m Diamond League Races.

PURPOSE: To determine the impact of Wavelight Technology on performance and tactical and pacing behavior in 1500-m Diamond League events. METHODS: A total of forty-five 1500-m Diamond League races held between 2021 and 2024 were categorized as non-Wavelight (n = 12) and Wavelight (n = 33) races. Athletes in each race were grouped by their final ranking: top 4 (T4), fifth to eighth (T8), and ninth to twelfth (T12). The 100-m section data were collected to assess athletes' section speeds, intermediate positions, and number of position changes. Additionally, finishing times and coefficient of va

Competitive water polo. Upper extremity injuries.

Water polo is a contact sport combining the skills of swimming, swim conditioning, throwing and, occasionally, the elements of wrestling and boxing. As such, the athletes frequently sustain upper extremity injuries involving the shoulder, the elbow, or the hand and fingers; moreover, injuries may result from either overuse or acute trauma. Successful treatment of these injuries requires an understanding of the peculiarities of the game and the likely mechanisms of injury, and the experience to properly recognize when they occur.

Beyond "toxicity:" Rethinking rage, rivalry, and regulation in online games.

The nomenclature used to describe harmful behavior in gaming remains vague and inconsistently applied. "Toxicity" has become the dominant label, yet it functions as an umbrella term encompassing heterogeneous behaviors that differ by context, intent, and cultural norms. This conceptual ambiguity obscures underlying psychological mechanisms that are critical for designing effective interventions. This article looks beyond descriptors to focus on psychological dynamics and how they can inform effective prevention efforts. We conducted a conceptual analysis integrating mimetic theory with existin

Coparenting Problems with Toddlers Predict Children's Symptoms of Psychological Problems at Age 7.

This study examined whether coparenting during toddlerhood predicts children's later symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, affective disorder, and somatic complaints. When children were 2 years old, 108 middle-class nonclinical families were observed in triadic interactions to assess two domains of dyadic coparenting (competitive and cooperative), as well as each parent's individual competitive behavior toward the spouse. Teachers and mothers reported children's symptoms of psychological problems at age 7. Independent of cooperative coparenting an

Factors Associated with Disordered Eating Behaviors among Triathletes.

CONTEXT: Although there is little data currently available concerning the primary factors associated with disordered eating behaviors among triathletes, these athletes may be at greater risk. Sports medicine professionals are in a unique position to identify athletes with disordered eating risks. METHODS: The purpose of this cross-sectional survey study was to identify the prevalence of disordered eating attitudes and behaviors among a national convenience sample of triathletes. A secondary purpose was to identify "triathlon-specific factors" and "competitive athlete-factors" potentially asso

Reproductive success of broiler breeders in natural mating systems: the effect of male-male competition, sperm quality, and morphological characteristics.

In natural mating systems in which broiler breeder males compete for females, reproductive behavior plays an important role in male fertility, along with sperm competition and morphological and physiological characteristics. We investigated the effect of male-male competition compared with a noncompetitive situation on fertility, sperm quality, and morphological traits. Six groups of 3 males and 12 females were housed in mixed-sex pens. Their frequency of mating was recorded, and progeny of each male was determined through DNA fingerprinting. Males with the highest and the lowest mating freque

"I am going to groom you": Multiple forms of play fighting in gray mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus).

Play fighting is a commonly reported form of play that involves competitive interactions that generally do not escalate to serious fighting. Although in many species what are competed over are the body targets that are bitten or struck in serious fighting, for many others, the competition can be over other forms of contact, such as sex, social grooming, and predation. In primates, the most detailed studies have been of species such as Old World monkeys, that engage in play fighting that simulates serious fighting, but reports of a number of others, especially among nocturnal prosimians, have n

The Impact of Different Competitive Environments on Pacing and Performance.

PURPOSE: In real-life competitive situations, athletes are required to continuously make decisions about how and when to invest their available energy resources. This study attempted to identify how different competitive environments invite elite short-track speed skaters to modify their pacing behavior during head-to-head competition. METHODS: Lap times of elite 500-, 1000- and 1500-m short-track speed skating competitions between 2011 and 2016 (N = 34,095 races) were collected. Log-transformed lap and finishing times were analyzed with mixed linear models. The fixed effects in the model wer

Native and non-native ambrosia beetles compete for deadwood resources.

A consequence of biological invasion is competition between native and non-native species. Ambrosia beetles (Curculionidae: Scolytinae, Platypodinae) are among the most successful insect invaders, but their impact in natural settings is poorly understood. Across the United States, non-native ambrosia beetles numerically dominate their native counterparts, creating concern of competitive displacement. We compile one new and three published datasets to test for competition between native and non-native ambrosia beetles within their breeding resources. For each dataset, deadwood objects were crea

When population growth intensifies intergroup competition, female colobus monkeys free-ride less.

Intergroup aggression often results in the production of public goods, such as a safe and stable social environment and a home range containing the resources required to survive and reproduce. We investigate temporal variation in intergroup aggression in a growing population of colobus monkeys (Colobus vellerosus) to ask a novel question: "Who stepped-up to produce these public goods when doing so became more difficult?". Both whole-group encounters and male incursions occurred more frequently as the population grew. Males and females were both more likely to participate in whole-group encount

Hysteresis Phenomenon Coupled with Capillary Phase Transition of N2/CH4 Binary Mixtures in Cylindrical Nanopores.

Capillary condensation/evaporation-induced hysteresis is a fundamental characteristic of confined fluid-phase transitions. Although extensively studied for pure fluids, the hysteresis behavior of confined fluid mixtures remains poorly understood. Here, grand canonical Monte Carlo-molecular dynamics (GCMD) simulations are employed to investigate adsorption-desorption hysteresis of N2/CH4 mixtures in cylindrical carbon nanopores. While pure CH4 and N2 exhibit the expected pore-size- and temperature-dependent hysteresis behavior, binary mixtures show strongly composition-dependent phase transitio

Anxiety, type A behavior, and cardiovascular disease.

Males with anxiety disorders appear to have increased mortality due to circulatory system disease, and Type A behavior is a risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD). Thus, we determined Type A behavior in anxious patients. Fifty-seven DSM-III defined anxiety disorder patients completed the Jenkins Activity Survey (JAS) and Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R). Significantly more male (92%) than female (52%) anxious patients had Type A behavior. Correlations between the JAS scales and SCL-90-R subscales were also different between male and female patients; in males, significant correlati

What is play fighting and what is it good for?

Play fighting is a common form of play reported among species of mammals, birds, and some other taxa. The competition present in play fighting revolves around gaining some advantage, such as biting a partner without being bitten. The behavior simulated during play fighting need not be restricted to that present in adult serious fighting, but can involve competitive interactions derived from amicable behavior, such as sex and social grooming, or from nonsocial competition, such as predation. What unifies play fighting, irrespective of the functional behavior being simulated, is that it involves

Assessment of repeated displays: a test of possible mechanisms.

Many animals signal their resource holding potential (RHP) to deter competitors from engaging them in potentially costly fights. Studies of this opponent assessment function have generated important insights into signal design and evolution. In the case of sounds, rate of production is often a salient feature. We used digital video playback to conduct analogous experiments exploring the importance of temporal variation in visual signals. Our study focused on the push-up display of male Jacky dragons Amphibolurus muricatus, an Australian agamid lizard. This stereotyped movement-based signal is

Frontal neurons driving competitive behaviour and ecology of social groups.

Competitive interactions have a vital role in the ecology of most animal species1-3 and powerfully influence the behaviour of groups4,5. To succeed, individuals must exert effort based on not only the resources available but also the social rank and behaviour of other group members2,6,7. The single-cellular mechanisms that precisely drive competitive interactions or the behaviour of social groups, however, remain poorly understood. Here we developed a naturalistic group paradigm in which large cohorts of mice competitively foraged for food as we wirelessly tracked neuronal activities across th

Fighting force and experience combine to determine contest success in a warlike mammal.

Conflicts between social groups or "intergroup contests" are proposed to play a major role in the evolution of cooperation and social organization in humans and some nonhuman animal societies. In humans, success in warfare and other collective conflicts depends on both fighting group size and the presence and actions of key individuals, such as leaders or talismanic warriors. Understanding the determinants of intergroup contest success in other warlike animals may help to reveal the role of these contests in social evolution. Using 19 y of data on intergroup encounters in a particularly violen

[Adult oviposition and larvae feeding behavior of Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on tobacco plants after infested by B-biotype Bemisia tabaci (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae)].

To understand the effects of the defense responses of tobacco plants induced by the infesting of B-biotype Bemisia tabaci to Spodoptera litura, and to explore the mechanisms of the interspecific interactions between B-biotype B. tabaci and S. litura, a laboratory experiment was conducted to study the effects of tobacco plants after infested by B-biotype B. tabaci on the adult oviposition selection and the larvae feeding, anti-feeding, and other feeding behaviors of S. litura. Male mating biology.

Before sterile mass-reared mosquitoes are released in an attempt to control local populations, many facets of male mating biology need to be elucidated. Large knowledge gaps exist in how both sexes meet in space and time, the correlation of male size and mating success and in which arenas matings are successful. Previous failures in mosquito sterile insect technique (SIT) projects have been linked to poor knowledge of local mating behaviours or the selection of deleterious phenotypes during colonisation and long-term mass rearing. Careful selection of mating characteristics must be combined wi
