The effect of air flow and medial adductory compression on vocal efficiency and glottal vibration.

This study used an in vivo canine model to investigate the effects of varying vocal fold resistance by electrically stimulating the recurrent laryngeal nerve while monitoring medial adductory compression of the vocal folds, glottal airflow, and vocal intensity. The effects of increasing airflow on glottal vibration were also examined stroboscopically and by measurement of open quotient. The results indicated that increasing intensity by medial adductory compression was more efficient than by increasing airflow. Increasing airflow produced a significantly greater open quotient and vocal fold vi

Capabilities of battery and compressed air storage in the economic energy scheduling and flexibility regulation of multi-microgrids including non-renewable/renewable units.

Economic scheduling of multi-microgrids containing distributed units and storage devices is expressed in this scheme according to the multi-objective energy management system. Microgrid operator considers the economic, security, flexibility and operation objectives. The present method minimizes the weighted sum of voltage security index, energy loss, and energy cost. Constraints consider the optimal power flow formulation, flexibility and voltage stability limits in microgrids, and mathematical formulation of sources and storages operation. Microgrid includes non-renewable and renewable units,

Manual external chest compression reverses respiratory failure in children with severe air trapping.

We report manual external chest compression (MECC) as an effective treatment for acute respiratory failure due to severe air trapping. In this retrospective study, we describe our experience with MECC administered to five children suffering from severe air trapping as a consequence of severe asthma or bronchiolitis. These children were admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) with clinical and blood gases parameters compatible with acute respiratory failure. Before intubation MECC was performed. The results of blood gasses before, during, and after MECC showed gradual changes in PC

A review of diving practices and outcomes following the diagnosis of a persistent (patent) foramen ovale in compressed air divers with a documented episode of decompression sickness.

INTRODUCTION: The presence of a persistent (patent) foramen ovale (PFO) increases the risk of decompression sickness (DCS) whilst diving with pressurised air. After the diagnosis of a PFO, divers will be offered a number of options for risk mitigation. The aim of this study was to review the management choices and modifications to diving practices following PFO diagnosis in the era preceding the 2015 joint position statement (JPS) on PFO and diving. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted of divers sourced from both the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne and the Divers Alert Network Asia-Pacific

Full-Thickness Compressive Corneal Sutures with Removal of Anterior Chamber Air Bubble in the Management of Acute Corneal Hydrops.

Acute hydrops is a rare complication of corneal ectatic disease, which occurs secondary to Descemet membrane break. Spontaneous resolution of this condition is associated with longstanding ocular discomfort and corneal scar. Intracameral gas/air injection with or without corneal suturing, anterior segment ocular coherence tomography (ASOCT)-guided drainage of intrastromal fluid, and penetrating keratoplasty are some of the described surgical interventions to manage this condition. The purpose of our study was to assess the effect of full-thickness corneal suturing as a solo treatment in the ma

Air-source heat pump heating based water vapor compression for localized steam sterilization applications during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sterilization is of great importance to prevent the spread and resurgence of the COVID-19, yet sterilization methods are all energy intensive in general. Steam sterilization is easily maintained and can be applied in various scenarios with less residual pollution. However, the current steam generator (so called boiler) has brought many energy and environmental concerns. With the investigation on steam sterilization's features, this study proposed a clean and flexible steam generation system with the air source heat pump and water vapor compressor, and the system can be further simplified throu

Controlled local air-balloon compression chest belt on postoperative seroma in breast cancer: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial in Zunyi, China.

BACKGROUND: Seroma formation is a common postoperative complication of breast cancer surgery, leading to delayed wound healing, infection, patient discomfort, and repeated outpatient visits. In severe cases, it can cause skin flap necrosis, imposing physical, psychological, and financial burdens on patients. Applying compression bandaging to the patient's postoperative wound with a chest strap is an effective measure to prevent seroma formation. However, the commonly used elastic chest straps cannot provide specific compression values, limiting their use. Therefore, we aim to compare the effic

[Subcutaneous emphysema of hand and forearm due to high-pressure injection of air].

Cutaneous injuries with crepitus suggest infections caused by gas forming organisms. The non infectious causes of subcutaneous emphysema are under recognized, and are usually of good prognosis. A 27 year old man presented a swollen hand and forearm. He had suffered a small puncture wound in a finger. He had cleaned and dried the area briefly with compressed air, developing a fast swelling of this hand and forearm. At examination, we found extended subcutaneous emphysema in a radiography and observed subcutaneous air in the hand and forearm; 48 hs later there was no evidence of subcutaneous air

Experimental evaluation of a cost-effective tesla turbine for waste air energy recovery in transportation systems.

Waste energy recovery from mechanical systems represents a promising approach for improving energy utilization in transportation applications. In air brake systems used in heavy-duty vehicles and railway trains, a considerable amount of compressed air is released without being utilized for useful energy conversion. This study presents the design, fabrication, and experimental evaluation of a cost-effective Tesla turbine intended for recovering compressed air energy from such systems. A bladeless Tesla turbine prototype was manufactured using CNC machining and consisted of ten coaxially arrange
