Evaluation of High-Efficiency Image Coding algorithm for dermatology images in teledermatology.

BACKGROUND: Currently, teledermatology assumes a progressively greater role in the modern healthcare system, especially in consultation, diagnosis, or examining lesions and skin cancers. One of the major challenges facing teledermatology systems is determining the optimal image compression method to efficiently reduce the space needed for electronic storage and data transmission. OBJECTIVE: To the objective and subjective assessment of HEIC compression method on dermatological color images and benchmarking the performance of High-Efficiency Image Coding (HEIC) with different algorithms to a f

Current approach to radial nerve paralysis.

After studying this article, the participant should be able to: 1. Identify all potential points of radial nerve compression and other likely causes of radial nerve injury. 2. Accurately diagnose both surgical and nonsurgical causes of radial nerve paralysis. 3. Define a safe and effective approach to the surgical release and reconstruction of the radial nerve. Radial nerve paralysis, which can result from a complex humerus fracture, direct nerve trauma, compressive neuropathies, neuritis, or (rarely) from malignant tumor formation, has been reported throughout the literature, with some contro

Cell-based two-region competition algorithm with a map framework for boundary delineation of a series of 2D ultrasound images.

To ensure the delineated boundaries of a series of 2-D images closely following the visually perceivable edges with high boundary coherence between consecutive slices, a cell-based two-region competition algorithm based on a maximum a posteriori (MAP) framework is proposed. It deforms the region boundary in a cell-by-cell fashion through a cell-based two-region competition process. The cell-based deformation is guided by a cell-based MAP framework with a posterior function characterizing the distribution of the cell means in each region, the salience and shape complexity of the region boundary

Evaluation of deep neural network-based strategies for the compensation of sensorineural hearing loss.

Conventional hearing aid (HA) algorithms, developed based on computational and non-differentiable auditory processing models, do not typically compensate for cochlear synaptopathy (CS). Traditional HAs apply fixed or rule-based gain adjustments within predefined frequency bands and compression ratios, instead of model-based fitting that numerically optimizes processing from neural representations of normal and impaired hearing. To compensate for combined CS and outer-hair-cell (OHC) loss, deep neural network (DNN)-based closed-loop HA systems are gaining traction. Here, we present several DNN-

Semiautomated Pipeline Effectively Assesses Severity and Monitor Disease Progression in Compressed Spinal Cord of Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy Patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) is a progressive and disabling condition resulting from chronic compression of the spinal cord, leading to functional impairments that can severely affect quality of life. Traditional methods for assessing spinal cord injury and morphometrics rely on subjective visualization of contrast changes and manual segmentation, which are nonstandardized, time-consuming, and inconsistent across patients. This variability limits understanding of DCM pathology and hampers timely clinical intervention. METHODS: We introduce a semiautomated

Does the Pathologic Fracture Predict Severe Paralysis in Patients with Metastatic Epidural Spinal Cord Compression (MESCC)?-A Retrospective, Single-Center Cohort Analysis.

Currently, there is uncertainty about the predictive factors for metastatic epidural spinal cord compression (MESCC) and consecutive symptomatology in tumor patients. Prognostic algorithms for identifying patients at risk for paralysis are missing. The influence of the pathologic fracture on the patient's symptoms is widely discussed in the literature and we hypothesize that pathologic fractures contribute to spinal cord compression and are therefore predictive of severe paralysis. We tested this hypothesis in 136 patients who underwent surgery for spinal metastases. The most common primary ca

A digital filterbank hearing aid: predicting user preference and performance for two signal processing algorithms.

OBJECTIVE: In a series of experiments with a wearable binaural digital hearing aid, two hearing aid processing algorithms were compared. Both algorithms provided individual frequency shaping via a seven-band filterbank with compression limiting in the high-frequency channel. They differed in the processing of the low-frequency channel, using dynamic range compression for one (DynEar) and linear processing with compression limiting for the other (LinEar). In a pilot field test we found that LinEar/ DynEar preference based on use time could be predicted from auditory dynamic range data. For the

Development and validation of a radiomics-based model for predicting osteoporosis in patients with lumbar compression fractures.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis, a metabolic bone disorder, markedly elevates fracture risks, with vertebral compression fractures being predominant. Antiosteoporotic treatments for patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF) lessen both the occurrence of subsequent fractures and associated pain. Thus, diagnosing osteoporosis in OVCF patients is vital. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to develop a predictive radiographic model using T1 sequence MRI images to accurately determine whether patients with lumbar spine compression fractures also have osteoporosis. Using Automatic Speech Recognition to Optimize Hearing-Aid Time Constants.

Automatic speech recognition (ASR), when combined with hearing-aid (HA) and hearing-loss (HL) simulations, can predict aided speech-identification performances of persons with age-related hearing loss. ASR can thus be used to evaluate different HA configurations, such as combinations of insertion-gain functions and compression thresholds, in order to optimize HA fitting for a given person. The present study investigated whether, after fixing compression thresholds and insertion gains, a random-search algorithm could be used to optimize time constants (i.e., attack and release times) for 12 aud

Anti-noise variational sparse Bayesian estimation ghost imaging based on 3Level factor graph.

In response to existing compressed sensing ghost imaging (CSGI) schemes, an innovative Bayesian compressed sensing ghost imaging with better anti-noise performance is proposed, by using the sparse representation of K-Singular Value Decomposition (KSVD) and a 3Level (3L)-hierarchical variational message passing (VMP) algorithm. Simulation and experimental results confirm that, this innovative method overcomes the limitations of presetting specific parameters (sparsity, noise level, etc.), and also demonstrates superior performance in terms of reconstruction accuracy and imaging quality, especia

Analysis of the sensitivity and specificity of compressed sensing magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a powerful tool for predicting heart failure (HF) patient prognosis (including death), but it adversely affecting clinical diagnosis and work efficiency. Compressed sensing technology reconstructs and recovers signals using sampling points that are far below the requirement of traditional sampling laws, which can shorten the signal acquisition time without affecting the image quality of MRI. This study aimed to apply compressed sensing technology to the MRI images of patients with HF to evaluate its effectiveness in the diagnosis of HF. Although

Venous thoracic outlet syndrome.

Venous thoracic outlet syndrome (vTOS) is a spectrum of disease caused by external compression of the subclavian vein as it passes through the costoclavicular space. Paget-Schroetter's Syndrome (PSS) or effort thrombosis is a subtype of vTOS where compression and microtrauma to subclavian vein from repetitive arm movements results in venous thrombosis. PSS or effort thrombosis mostly affects young otherwise healthy active individuals, and this further highlights the importance of this condition. Early diagnosis and aggressive early intervention aimed at complete resolution of acute symptoms an

The actual management of tumor and vertebral compression fractures.

Tumor related fractures of the spine frequently dictate surgical management. The most critical factors influencing the need and type of surgery are degree of epidural cord compression, radiosensitivity of the tumor, presence of spinal instability and patient medical status/ estimated survivorship. There is a wide spectrum of therapeutic options: major en bloc resections in primary or oligometastatic disease; decompression and fusion in non-radiosensitive tumors with cord compression followed by adjuvant radiation therapy (RT); kyphoplasty/ vertebroplasty for stable compression fractures or min

Categorising compression garments and accessories for upper-body lymphoedema.

Compression therapy is pivotal to the management of lymphoedema of the upper limb, breast and trunk. Compression can be achieved with a range of garment types and accessories. Distinguishing between these categories is foundational to using the STRIDE algorithm for compression selection, a tool designed to guide healthcare providers in optimising compression therapy for improved patient outcomes. This article outlines the seven garment categories of circular-knit garments, stiffer circular-knit garments, flat-knit garments, adjustable wraps, decongestive wraps, night-time garments and trunk ga

Case report to demonstrate the need for selection criteria for optimal adjustable Velcro wrap prescription.

Compression, in the form of either a compression bandage or a compression stocking, has been touted as the gold standard for treatment of swelling and venous leg ulcers (VLUs). Adjustable Velcro wraps have been marketed as compression alternative. Although there is a growing body of evidence to support use of these products, there has not been a critical evaluation of the functionality of the devices to best matching product to patient presentation and ability to use the device effectively. Unlike compression garments, which are classified by compression category (class I/II or flat knit/circu

Enhancement of capnogram waveform in the presence of chest compression artefact during cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

BACKGROUND: Current resuscitation guidelines emphasize the use of waveform capnography to help guide rescuers during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). However, chest compressions often cause oscillations in the capnogram, impeding its reliable interpretation, either visual or automated. The aim of the study was to design an algorithm to enhance waveform capnography by suppressing the chest compression artefact. METHODS: Monitor-defibrillator recordings from 202 patients in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest were analysed. Capnograms were classified according to the morphology of the artefact.

Endoscopic Treatment of Biliary Anastomotic Strictures After Liver Transplantation: Algorithmic Approach of a Single Tertiary Center.

BACKGROUND: The optimal endoscopic strategy for postliver transplantation anastomotic strictures remains undefined. This study aimed to evaluate an algorithmic, stepwise approach based on stricture severity over a 13-year period. METHODS: This retrospective study included 78 patients treated between 2011 and 2024. Standard endoscopic passage of the anastomotic stricture using a guidewire was attempted in all cases. When this was unsuccessful, a percutaneous-endoscopic rendezvous procedure was performed; if the stricture remained impassable, a magnetic compression anastomosis was applied. RES

Unknown vascular compression of the airway in patients with congenitalheart disease and persistent lower respiratory symptoms.

Background/aim: Airway compression (AC) by vascular structures is an important complication of congenital heart disease (CHD) that often goes unrecognized. It is not easy to identify whether CHD patients require additional invasive examinations or not. Therefore, the present study aims to develop an AC diagnostic algorithm for CHD patients. Materials and methods: CHD patients with persistent respiratory symptoms that were treated between January 2007 and December 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. The following data were recorded for all CHD patients with AC: age, cardiac anomalies, the compr
