Comparative evaluation of compressive strength of CAD-CAM polyetheretherketone and indirect composite Class II inlays: an in vitro study.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a high-performance thermoplastic polymer that is currently being utilized in the dental field due to its desirable mechanical characteristics, biocompatibility, and ease of integration into digital CAD-CAM processes. Despite the esthetic and esthetic benefits of composite resins in Class II inlays, mechanical performance in high-stress posterior restorations continues to be a clinical issue with the material. Although other research has been conducted to utilize PEEK in different dental treatment procedures, there are no direct comparative studies dealing specifi

Comparison of deep LSTM and machine learning models for predicting compressive strength of fly ash/slag-based geopolymer concrete.

In the production of geopolymer concrete (GPC), using ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and fly ash (FA) can reduce the carbon dioxide footprint and decrease the amount of waste materials released into the environment. Finding the compressive strength (fc) of GPC through experiments is time-consuming and costly; thus, applying artificial intelligence models can expedite this process. This study aims to compare the performance of deep Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and the machine learning (ML)-based algorithms in predicting the fc of FA/GGBFS-based GPC. Artificial neural networks (AN

Advanced Estimation of Compressive Strength and Fracture Behavior in Ceramic Honeycombs by Polarimetry Measurements of Similar Epoxy Resin Honeycombs.

Finding a non-destructive characterization method for cellular ceramics' compressive strength and fracture behavior has been a challenge for material scientists for years. However, for transparent materials, internal stresses can be determined by the non-destructive photoelastic measurements. We propose a novel approach to correlate the photoelastic stresses of polymer (epoxy resin) prototypes with the mechanical properties of ceramics (alumina). Regular and inverse epoxy honeycombs were 3D-printed via stereolithography with varying structure angles from -35° to 35°, with negative angles formi

Experimental study on the influence of locked-in stress on the uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus of rocks.

The rock contains many inclusions which produce high locked-in stress under the ground stress. In order to study the influence of locked-in stress on the mechanical properties of rocks, the rock-like materials and nitrile rubber particles are used to make a test block of the rock-like model which contains inclusions. The rubber particles will expand as the test block is heated, which creates locked-in stress in the inclusions. Uniaxial compression tests of similar model blocks with different locked-in stresses and different inclusion contents were performed by using a water bath and MTS-5T uni

High Structural Stability, High Compressive Strength, Excellent Thermal Insulation and Mechanism of Needled Quartz Fiber Felt/Phenolic Aerogel Composites.

A lightweight composite that simultaneously exhibits high strength and excellent thermal insulation is of great interest for thermal protection applications. In this study, dimensionally stable needled quartz fiber felt-reinforced phenolic aerogel composites were prepared using vacuum impregnation, sol-gel, and ambient pressure drying. The composites exhibit a multiscale porous structure formed by interconnected nanometer polymer skeletons and micronscale fibers. By regulating the thermoplastic phenolic resin concentration in the precursor solution, the pore structure of the material was refin

Increasing the compressive strength of a high clay content sandstone reservoir by chemical sand consolidation with minimal permeability reduction.

The integrity of geological formations is critically affected when external forces surpass the rock’s inherent resistance, particularly during oil and gas extraction. Insufficient formation strength to counteract declining flow pressure can result in the migration of sand particles towards the wellbore. The selection of sand control techniques is influenced by a multitude of factors, including well and reservoir conditions, operational methodologies, resource availability, and economic viability. A prevalent chemical strategy for mitigating sand migration in oil reservoirs involves the in-situ

Influence of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages on the compressive strength of core build-up bulk-fill resin materials.

BACKGROUND: In the oral cavity, restorations and teeth are subject to occlusal stresses, as well as physiological and chemical wear processes. The consumption of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages is popular among adolescents, and this habit often persists into adulthood, contributing to tooth erosion. The erosive potential of these beverages is influenced by various factors, including the pH, acid type, buffer capacity, adhesion, chelating effect, and phosphate or calcium or fluoride content of the drink. Several studies have confirmed that the excessive consumption of alcoholic and non-al

Compressive strength of interbody cages in the lumbar spine: the effect of cage shape, posterior instrumentation and bone density.

One goal of interbody fusion is to increase the height of the degenerated disc space. Interbody cages in particular have been promoted with the claim that they can maintain the disc space better than other methods. There are many factors that can affect the disc height maintenance, including graft or cage design, the quality of the surrounding bone and the presence of supplementary posterior fixation. The present study is an in vitro biomechanical investigation of the compressive behaviour of three different interbody cage designs in a human cadaveric model. The effect of bone density and post

Degradation Law of Mechanical Properties and Long-Term Compressive Strength Prediction Model of Unsaturated Polyester Resin Concrete in Aqueous Environments.

Unsaturated polyester resin concrete (UPC) exhibits high strength and corrosion resistance, and it has been widely used in hydraulic engineering structures. However, the diffusion of water molecules inevitably induces matrix plasticization and debonding at the aggregate-resin interface, which leads to progressive degradation of mechanical performance under long-term aqueous service conditions. To elucidate the water-induced mechanical deterioration mechanism of UPC and to develop a temperature-adaptive model for long-term compressive strength prediction, we prepared UPC specimens using graded

Compressive Strength of Midfoot Fusion Nail vs Midfoot Fusion Bolt and Role of Subtalar Fusion in Midfoot Charcot Fixation Model.

BACKGROUND: Operative management of midfoot Charcot arthropathy often involves an extended midfoot arthrodesis with intramedullary bolts for fixation, a method called "beaming." Recently intramedullary nails have been introduced for the same indication, presumably providing stronger fixation. This study compares midfoot fusion nails to bolts with regard to stiffness and compressive ability. Additionally, we assessed how the addition of a subtalar fusion affects the construct. METHODS: Medial column fusions were performed on 10 matched cadaver foot specimens with either a midfoot fusion nail o

Compression force and pullout strength comparison of bioabsorbable implants for osteochondral lesion fixation.

We conducted a study to characterize compression forces and pullout strengths of 4 commercially available bioabsorbable nails and screws in a synthetic bone model. A piezoelectric sensor was used to measure peak compression forces, and a material testing machine was used to measure maximum pullout strengths. The strongest compression force was found for SmartScrew (12.7 N), then SmartNail (12.3 N), LactoNail (8.5 N), and ReUnite Screw (5.1 N). Mean compression force was significantly (P<.05) different between LactoNail and SmartScrew, ReUnite Screw and SmartNail, and ReUnite Screw and SmartScr

Moisture-Dependent Strength Properties of Thermally-Modified Fraxinus excelsior Wood in Compression.

European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) is one of the species commonly used for wood thermal modification that improves its performance. The presented research aimed to investigate a moisture-dependent strength anisotropy of thermally-modified European ash in compression. Wood samples were modified at 180 °C and 200 °C. Their mechanical parameters were determined in the principal anatomical directions under dry (moisture content of 3%) and wet (moisture content above fibre saturation point) conditions. Effect of heat treatment temperature and moisture content on the ash wood mechanical parameters

Lubrication empirical model to predict tensile strength of directly compressed powder blends.

A new approach is proposed to support prediction of tablet tensile strength as a function of both solid fraction (and/or compression pressure) and extent of lubrication by using empirical data to parameterise the model. This is a pre-requisite for simulation of the compaction unit operation where a linkage from tablet press operating parameters and formulation material properties to output tensile strength is required. The approach extends the previously published Kushner and Moore model to allow calculation across a range of solid fractions. The applicability of the approach is supported by t

Fabrication of highly ordered willemite/PCL bone scaffolds by 3D printing: Nanostructure effects on compressive strength and in vitro behavior.

In this study, first willemite (Zn2SiO4) micro and nano-powders were synthesized by the sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were applied to characterize the crystalline phases and particle size of powders. Then polycaprolactone (PCL) polymer scaffolds containing 20 wt% willemite were successfully fabricated by the DIW 3D printing (direct ink writing) method. The effects of willemite particle size on compressive strength, elastic modulus, degradation rate, and bioactivity of the composite scaffolds were investigated
