Psychometric Properties of the Commitment to Exercise Scale in Inpatients With Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Compulsive exercise is a common behaviour among persons with eating disorders, particularly in those with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). In the current study, we examined psychometric properties of a German version of the eight-item Commitment to Exercise Scale (CES) with a four-point scale response format. METHOD: Data of N = 2424 persons with AN and BN who completed the CES among other measures as part of the routine diagnostic assessment at admission to and discharge from inpatient treatment were analysed based on a preregistered protocol (https://doi.org/10.176

Expression of V‑domain Ig suppressor of T cell activation in ovarian cancer and its regulation of follicular regulatory T‑cell function via the AKT/MAPK pathway.

BACKGROUND: Patients with eating disorders (ED) often suffer from compulsive exercise behavior, which is associated with lower short-term response to treatment and poorer long-term outcome. Evidence-based interventions specifically targeting compulsive exercise behavior have been scarce so far. We developed a manualized group therapeutic approach integrating cognitive-behavioral therapy, exercise therapy and exposure with response management to promote healthy exercise behavior. Our objective was to examine the feasibility and acceptance of this new approach as add-on to regular inpatient trea

Obsessive beliefs prospectively predict adherence to safety behaviours related to COVID-19 through obsessive-compulsive symptoms and COVID-19 distress: A serial multiple mediator analysis.

Obsessive-compulsive tendencies may render individuals vulnerable to elevated distress and over-adherence to safety behaviours during illness outbreaks. The present study investigated obsessive beliefs as a predictor of obsessive-compulsive symptoms, COVID-19 distress and the exercise of safety behaviours related to COVID-19 in a community sample. Four hundred seventy-nine participants responded to a questionnaire battery in March 2020 and 218 individuals participated in a follow-up assessment in September 2020. Results indicated that baseline obsessive beliefs predicted the exercise of baseli

Psychopathological considerations on the relationship between bulimia and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The relationship between eating disorders, impulse control disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder as part of a so-called 'obsessive-compulsive spectrum' is discussed, with particular emphasis on the relationship between eating disorders (particularly bulimia) and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The empirical studies on comorbidity, personality and familiarity are briefly reviewed. Both similarities and differences found in personality, body image, mental rumination, fears, physical exercises, rituals, impulses (bulimic binging and obsessive impulses) and purging behaviors of these patients

Validation of the exercise and eating disorder questionnaire in males with and without eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The need to consider gender when studying exercise in eating disorder (ED) has been underscored. The study aimed to test the psychometric properties and factor structure of the exercise and eating disorder (EED) questionnaire for males with and without ED, to highlight gender differences, and to explore issues relevant for a male version of the EED questionnaire. METHOD: This cross sectional study included 258 male participants: 55 ED patients (inpatients and outpatients) and 203 student controls. The patient group consisted of 54.5% (n = 30) with AN, 18.2% (n = 10) with BN, 27.2%

Distinct delay discounting patterns in anorexia nervosa: Comparing monetary and exercise rewards across clinical subgroups.

AIMS: People with anorexia nervosa (AN) often engage in compulsive exercise to control weight and manage emotions, altering the reward associated with physical activity. Delay-discounting evaluates preference for immediate over delayed rewards, potentially indicating struggles with prioritizing long-term gains. However, the impact of AN on these factors remains unexplored. This study aims to assess the attitudes of individuals with AN using a modified exercise delay discount task, comparing them with the general population. METHODS: A sample of 76 individuals (70 women, 92.1%) with a diagnosi

Problematic Exercise in Anorexia Nervosa: Testing Potential Risk Factors against Different Definitions.

"Hyperactivity" has a wide prevalence range of 31% to 80% in the anorexia nervosa literature that could be partly due to the plethora of definitions provided by researchers in this field. The purpose of this study was two-fold: 1) To assess the variance across prevalence rates of problematic exercise encountered in patients with anorexia nervosa, in relation to seven different definitions found in the literature. 2) To examine how core eating disorder symptoms and the dimensions of emotional profile are associated with these different definitions and the impact of these definitions on the asse

Maladaptive Exercise in People With a Lifetime History of Eating Disorders: A Multicountry Observational Study.

OBJECTIVE: Maladaptive exercise (ME), problematic attitudes or behaviors related to physical activity, is often observed in eating disorders (EDs), but its prevalence, severity, and relationships with ED features remain incompletely characterized. This study aimed to describe lifetime and current ME across ED diagnoses, examine associations with ED symptoms, sociodemographic characteristics, and weight status, and compare ME phenotypes to identify those most strongly linked to ED features. METHODS: ME was assessed in 31,671 individuals with lifetime EDs (anorexia nervosa [AN], bulimia nervosa

Social media and smartphone technology in the symptomatology of OCD.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disabling and heterogeneous psychiatric disorder. In line with the trend towards globalisation and modern technology, the thematic content of obsessions and compulsions is bound to evolve over time. However, assessment scales such as the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale symptom checklist are not adapted accordingly. By means of two case reports, we would like to introduce social media and smartphone technology in the content of obsessions and compulsions. Our aim is to raise awareness among clinicians of these topics in key symptomatology of OCD an

Experience-dependent grooming microstructure alterations and gastrointestinal dysfunction in the SAPAP3 knockout mouse model of compulsive behaviour.

BACKGROUND: Compulsive- and anxiety-like behaviour can be efficiently modelled in SAPAP3 knockout (KO) mice, a preclinical model of relevance to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Although there is emerging evidence in the clinical literature of gastrointestinal dysfunction in OCD, no previous studies have investigated gut function in preclinical models of relevance to OCD. Similarly, the effects of voluntary exercise (EX) or environmental enrichment (EE) have not yet been explored in this context. METHOD: We comprehensively phenotyped the SAPAP3 KO mouse model, including the assessment of

Mental Disorders in Individuals With Exercise Addiction-A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background and Aims: Exercise addiction has not yet been designated as an addictive disorder in the DSM-5 due to a lack of detailed research. In particular, associations with other psychiatric diagnoses have received little attention. In this study, individuals with a possible exercise addiction are clinically assessed, in order to establish a profile of co-occurring psychiatric disorders in individuals with exercise addiction. Methods: One hundred and fifty-six individuals who reported exercising more than 10 h a week, and continued to do so despite illness or injury, were recruited for the s

Compulsivity in anorexia nervosa: a transdiagnostic concept.

The compulsive nature of weight loss behaviors central to anorexia nervosa (AN), such as relentless self-starvation and over-exercise, has led to the suggestion of parallels between AN and other compulsive disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and addictions. There is a huge unmet need for effective treatments in AN, which has high rates of morbidity and the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder, yet a grave paucity of effective treatments. Viewing compulsivity as a transdiagnostic concept, seen in various manifestations across disorders, may help delineate the mec

Clarifying exercise addiction: differential diagnosis, co-occurring disorders, and phases of addiction.

This paper sets out to clarify the unique features of exercise addiction. It begins by examining how this addiction can be distinguished from compulsions and impulse control disorders both of which, like an addiction, involve excessive behavior that creates adverse effects. Assessment of exercise addiction also requires that clinicians be attuned to other forms of excessive behavior, especially eating disorders that can co-occur with exercise. Finally in an effort to clarify exercise addiction, this paper uses the four phases of addiction to examine the attributes of exercise that define it as

Muscle Dysmorphia, Obsessive-Compulsive Traits, and Anabolic Steroid Use: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Muscle dysmorphia (MD) is a body image disorder characterized by an obsessive preoccupation with muscularity and compulsive behaviors such as excessive exercise, rigid dieting, and frequent body checking. MD has been linked to obsessive-compulsive traits and the use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AASs), yet these associations have not been comprehensively synthesized. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the relationships between MD, obsessive-compulsive symptomatology, and AASs or performance-enhancing drug use. Recent insights in the correlation between social media use, personality traits and exercise addiction: a literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: The excessive involvement in physical activity without stopping in between sessions despite injuries, the continuous thinking to exercise feeling insane thoughts and experiencing withdrawal symptoms are all characteristics of the Exercise Addiction (EA), an addictive behavior. While the primary exercise addiction is directly caused by compulsive exercise, many studies highlighted the relationship between Eating Disorders (ED) and EA, defining the secondary EA. The correlation between EA, social media use (SMU) and other individual traits remains a relatively underexplored

Adaptive and Maladaptive Exercise in Eating Disorders.

While exercise is generally associated with positive health outcomes, in the context of eating disorders, exercise has high potential to become maladaptive. Maladaptive exercise is compelled or compulsive in nature for the purposes of weight and shape control or to obtain/avoid other eating disorder-relevant consequences. A transdiagnostic eating disorder feature with moderate-to-high prevalence across restrictive- and bulimic-spectrum eating disorders, maladaptive exercise is often associated with negative mental and physical health sequalae.
