Manipulating cybersickness in virtual reality-based neurofeedback and its effects on training performance.

Objective. Virtual reality (VR) serves as a modern and powerful tool to enrich neurofeedback (NF) and brain-computer interface (BCI) applications as well as to achieve higher user motivation and adherence to training. However, between 20%-80% of all the users develop symptoms of cybersickness (CS), namely nausea, oculomotor problems or disorientation during VR interaction, which influence user performance and behavior in VR. Hence, we investigated whether CS-inducing VR paradigms influence the success of a NF training task.Approach. We tested 39 healthy participants (20 female) in a single-ses

Passive wireless tags for tongue controlled assistive technology interfaces.

Tongue control with low profile, passive mouth tags is demonstrated as a human-device interface by communicating values of tongue-tag separation over a wireless link. Confusion matrices are provided to demonstrate user accuracy in targeting by tongue position. Accuracy is found to increase dramatically after short training sequences with errors falling close to 1% in magnitude with zero missed targets. The rate at which users are able to learn accurate targeting with high accuracy indicates that this is an intuitive device to operate. The significance of the work is that innovative very unobtr

Discrimination training of phonemic contrasts enhances phonological processing in mainstream school children.

Auditory perceptual learning has been proposed as effective for remediating impaired language and for enhancing normal language development. We examined the effect of phonemic contrast discrimination training on the discrimination of whole words and on phonological awareness in 8- to 10-year-old mainstream school children. Eleven phonemic contrast continua were synthesised using linear interpolation coding from real speaker endpoints. Thirty children were pre-tested on the Word Discrimination Test (WDT) and the Phonological Assessment Battery (PhAB). Eighteen then trained for 12 x 30min sessio

Safe neuromuscular electrical stimulator designed for the elderly.

A stimulator for neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) was designed, especially suiting the requirements of elderly people with reduced cognitive abilities and diminished fine motor skills. The aging of skeletal muscle is characterized by a progressive decline in muscle mass, force, and condition. Muscle training with NMES reduces the degradation process. The discussed system is intended for evoked muscle training of the anterior and posterior thigh. The core of the stimulator is based on a microcontroller with two modular output stages. The system has two charge-balanced biphasic voltag

An interactive teaching device simulating intussusception reduction.

Intussusception is relatively uncommon, occurring in 0.5 to 2.3 cases per 1,000 live births in the USA. Radiology residents, therefore, have few opportunities to participate in intussusception reduction during training, and practicing radiologists encounter it infrequently. Training is essential, as successful reduction avoids surgery. The judgment involved in reducing an intussusception is best gained with experience. We developed a training device that simulates fluoroscopic intussusception reduction with air. The device consists of a doll that contains a cylinder with similar stress and str

A Perspective on Implementation of Technology-Driven Exergames for Adults as Telerehabilitation Services.

A major concern of public health authorities is to also encourage adults to be exposed to enriched environments (sensory and cognitive-motor activity) during the pandemic lockdown, as was recently the case worldwide during the COVID-19 outbreak. Games for adults that require physical activity, known as exergames, offer opportunities here. In particular, the output of the gaming industry nowadays offers computer games with extended reality (XR) which combines real and virtual environments and refers to human-machine interactions generated by computers and wearable technologies. For example, pla
